Visitors who really want to know what they are seeing will delight in the e xplanations and well-written background information contained in this book. An introductory section discusses national conditions, languages, religion , philosophies, art, and history. Each dynasty is outlined in choppy, textb ook style, while the art section is an odd, helpful mix of papercutting, fu nerary buildings, construction, opera, etc. Part two covers travel tips and basic information in alphabetic order, from "Airlines" to "When to Go." It includes helpful details on the usual topics, such as embassies, bargainin g, hotels, and photos, but also includes extra advice on crime, hairdresser s, and other subjects not always covered in other books. The bulk of the bo ok is devoted to a third part, which describes the cities, provinces, and s pecial treasures/highlights. Functional maps of temples, towns, and tombs a re included. Two small sections of postcard-style photos will tease the rea der into searching for the supporting text. The authors have cleverly inclu ded the Chinese characters for the names of sites-an important consideratio n in self-directed travel. Subject headings at the top of each page would m ake use easier. More concise thari most guides, it provides good background and locational material.
