3 Bornoff, Nicholas PINK SAMURAI: LOVE, MARRIAGE AND SEX IN CONTEMPORARY JAPAN
Pocket Books 1991 0671742655 / 9780671742652 Hardcover Good/Good
A probing look at Japanese sexuality, relationships, and love combines seri ous reporting and exhaustive research to offer a deeper understanding of th e relations between the sexes in Japan Editorial Reviews From Library Journal This graphic treatment of the evolution of the mizu shobai-- that much talk ed-about world of sexual freedom that exists in Japan--follows the "foreign er investigates" style of writing. Giving less space to love and marriage t han to sex in its many guises, Bornoff seeks to guide the reader from a ser ies of tatemae (if it looks good it is good) vignettes to the honne (real) sexual soul of the Japanese people. Although most of the modern references to the goings-on in Tokyo and elsewhere ring true, the inclusion of an anal ytical summary after 470+ pages of description seems like an afterthought a nd leaves one wondering if the writer was more interested in titillating st orytelling than in highlighting the maturity of the Japanese. The book rede ems itself somewhat in pointing out truly destructive trends that show the currents of change in Japanese popular culture. For comprehensive collectio ns. 8 Kawaharada, Dennis ROADS OF OKU: JOURNEYS IN THE HEARTLAND
Dennis Kawaharada 2015 1500885118 / 9781500885113 Paperback Near Fine
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Roads of Oku: Journeys in the Heartland is a collection of seven essays on Japanese history, culture, and literature, based on the author's research and travels in his ancestral homeland. Pat Matsueda writes in her review, "It's a revelation and a pleasure to travel with Kawaharada on his journey from Hawaii to homeland and heartland. ("Literary, personal pilgrimage comes to life in new book," Pat Matsueda, Honolulu Star Advertiser, May 10, 2015). Excerpts from Matsueda's review: After summarizing how his grandparents [immigrated to Hawai'i from Japan], were affected by World War II and influenced the way he grew up, the book alternates between two voices. The first is Kawaharada's personal voice recounting the trips he made to Japan, each time recovering some part of his family's culture and history. The second is that of a third-person narrator presenting deeply researched accounts of Hawaiian history and Japanese religion, customs, geography and archaeology. The last three essays in the book are perhaps the most moving and insightful. The title essay recounts the journey by Basho, "possessed by wanderlust," to set out on foot from Edo. In Snow Countryexamines the work of Nobel laureates Yasunari Kawabata and Kenzaburo Oe, among other writers. Hokule'a in Yokohama describes the traditional Hawaiian voyaging canoe's 2007 journey to Japan. By this time a reader has grown to understand the relationship between the thoughtful, poetic voice of the traveler and the distant, seemingly.
