HALF A CENTURY OF JAPANESE THEATER, 1970'S, Association, Japan Playwrights
3 Association, Japan Playwrights HALF A CENTURY OF JAPANESE THEATER, 1970'S
Janpan Playwrights Assn 2004 4314101547 / 9784314101547 Paperback Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Half a Centu Half a Century of Japanese Theater is a series of translated Japanese plays that begins from the contemporary theater scene of the 1990s and moves back through the decades of modern Japanese theater to the mid-twentieth century. The threefold aim of the Japan Playwrights Association in publishing this series is to offer performable English translations of modern Japanese plays, to encourage the production of such plays by foreign theatrical troupes, and to extend possibilities for further international exchange in theater. This fifth volume treats six plays from the 1970s. Crime is the dominant subject. Three plays are about homicide, two are about other criminal offenses against public order and society, and one is about survival during times of war. While many of the human relations depicted in these works illustrate exploitation and brutalization, the touch of the playwrights is often surprisingly light and humorous. These dramas offer serious but enjoyable reading. Contents: The Amida Black Chant Murder Mystery (Fujita Den); The Atami Murder Case (Tsuka Kohei); Mystery Tour (Komatsu Mikio); The Family Adrift: The Jesus Ark Incident (Yamazaki Tetsu); Ayako: Mom's Cherry Blossoms Never Fall (Okabe Kodai); Claire de Lune (Takeuchi Juichiro).

6 Katsu, Yoshida HIGH COUP: ILLUSTRATIONS
Kodansha America 1985 0870117645 / 9780870117640 First Paperback Very Good
A highly collectible first edition/printing, tight clean copy,, no inscript ions, this is not an Ex-Lib or a BCE/BOMC edition. As the clever pun of the title indicates, Yoshida is one of Japan's best-kn own illustrators. The workreproduced in color or black and white when appro priateruns from 1974 to 1985, and constitutes a rogue's gallery of cultural superstars. Rendered in Yoshida's nervous, nervy style are a wide-mouthed Elvis Presley; Rod Stewart almost lost in a red-and-yellow welter of Orient al-looking hieroglyphic slashes; artist M. C. Escher's head divided into si x stacked portions; and a fleshy, brushy abstraction of actor Al Pacino. Yo shida maintains that he does not want to be considered an artist, but rathe r an illustrator. The publisher has obliged him with a suitably pulpy produ ction that is hard to put down. (June Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

7 Kenrick, Douglas Moore JOMON OF JAPAN: THE WORLD'S OLDEST POTTERY
Routledge/Kegan Paul Interna 1995 0710304757 / 9780710304759 Hardcover Very Good
No dustjacket, some wear to boards, pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The prehistoric hunter-gatherer culture known as the Jomon was already well researched in Japan when, during the 1960s, scientific tests indicated tha t the very earliest of the Jomon pottery had been made more than 12,000 yea rs ago. Japanese reaction was twofold: according to the archaeological establishmen t the tests were wrong, while some of the new wave of archaeologists believ ed that the tests were reliable and that it was only a matter of time befor e similar tests indicated even earlier dates for pottery from China and els ewhere. Since the 1960s, supporting evidence and many more tests have subst antiated the 12,000 year result, and nowhere else in the world has provided such early evidence. By the 1970s the primacy of the Jomon potters was accepted by most archaeol ogists in Japan, and was beginning to be recognized in the West. However, r ecognition is far from complete, largely due to a lack of any comprehensive account of Jomon pottery in the English language. In Jomon of Japan Dougla s Kenrick provides just such an account, and compares Jomon dates with thos e of other early pottery cultures. Douglas Kenrick describes how, in the isolation of the Japanese islands, Jomon pottery was made for no less than 10,000 years. During those ten millennia, Jomon technology did not change and the pottery remained hand-made. Jomon potters developed exceptional levels of skill, and employed an unparalleled variety of decorative techniques ranging from incision and applique, through cord-marking and relief modelling, to extravagant sculptural.

9 Koie, Ryoji RYOJI KOIE
University of Washington Pre 2000 0295979712 / 9780295979717 First Hardcover Near Fine
A superb crisp and clean copy, Illustrated laminated boards. Issued without dustjacket. pp 80. Among the many Japanese ceramic artists working today, Ryoji Koie is the one at the most critical interface with contemporary art. Whether teabowl, vase, open-mouthed cylinder, tray, or bottle, Koie's chos en shapes are instantly identifiable as pottery yet they become departure-p oints for an extraordinary range of surface treatments from the indulgent t o the austere. This volume illustrates and considers a body of work created by Koie during a residency in Seattle at the University of Washington. He located natural deposits of clay in a variety of local sites. Vases, vessel s, trays, footed plates, and "stretched" plates were created in profusion, each subject to the artist's freewheeling imagination in altering, throwing , ripping and tearing, and applying glaze and liquid clay or "slip.". Signe d by Ryoji Koie and Matthew Kangas.
