Palgrave Macmillan 1992 031208692X / 9780312086923 Paperback Fine
Moves towards democracy in Eastern Europe and the collapse of the former So viet Union have launched the EC into a new stage in its evolution, and are testing the strength of the Community on the eve of the Single European Mar ket. Arguments within the EC, on issues of national sovereignty, monetary u nion, and Germany's role are likely to continue, but contradict the EC's de sire to show itself as an effective force in world politics. In the midst o f the polemic and rhetoric, it is easy to lose sight of the EC's original a ims and the extent to which they may be seen to have succeeded or failed. T his authoritative new text provides comprehensive coverage of all aspects o f the EC, including its historical development since the Second World War, its institutional framework, its main policy initiatives (agricultural, eco nomic, regional, social, environmental and foreign), and its relations with the rest of the world. A concluding chapter assesses the prospects for its development during the 1990s.

CRASHING THE GATE: NETROOTS, GRASSROOTS, AND THE RISE OF PEOPLE-POWERED POL ITICS, Armstrong, Jerome
3 Armstrong, Jerome CRASHING THE GATE: NETROOTS, GRASSROOTS, AND THE RISE OF PEOPLE-POWERED POL ITICS
Chelsea Green 2006 1931498997 / 9781931498999 First Hardcover Near Fine/Near Fine
A clean hardcover, no markings throughout, NOT an ex-library book: Crashing the Gate is a shot across the bow at the political establishment i n Washington, DC and a call to re-democratize politics in America. This book lays bare, with passion and precision, how ineffective, incompete nt, and antiquated the Democratic Party establishment has become, and how i t has failed to adapt and respond to new realities and challenges. The auth ors save their sharpest knives to go for the jugular in their critique of R epublican ideologues who are now running--and ruining--our country. Written by two of the most popular political bloggers in America, the book hails the new movement--of the netroots, the grassroots, the unorthodox lab or unions, the maverick big donors--that is the antidote to old-school poli tics as usual. Fueled by advances in technology and a hunger for a more aut hentic and populist democracy, this broad-based movement is changing the wa y political campaigns are waged and managed. A must-read book for anyone with an interest in the future of American democracy.

MAKING PATRIOTS, Berns, Walter
6 Berns, Walter MAKING PATRIOTS
University Of Chicago Press 2001 0226044378 / 9780226044378 Hardcover Very Good/Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Although Samuel Johnson once remarked that "patriotism is the last refuge o f scoundrels," over the course of the history of the United States we have seen our share of heroes: patriots who have willingly put their lives at ri sk for this country and, especially, its principles. And this is even more remarkable given that the United States is a country founded on the princip les of equality and democracy that encourage individuality and autonomy far more readily than public spiritedness and self-sacrifice. Walter Berns's Making Patriots is a pithy and provocative essay on precisel y this paradox. How is patriotism inculcated in a system that, some argue, is founded on self-interest? Expertly and intelligibly guiding the reader t hrough the history and philosophy of patriotism in a republic, from the anc ient Greeks through contemporary life, Berns considers the unique nature of patriotism in the United States and its precarious state. And he argues th at while both public education and the influence of religion once helped to foster a public-minded citizenry, the very idea of patriotism is currently under attack. Berns finds the best answers to his questions in the thought and words of Abraham Lincoln, who understood perhaps better than anyone what the principles of democracy meant and what price adhering to them may exact. The graves at Arlington and Gettysburg and Omaha Beach in Normandy bear witness to the fact that self-interested individuals can become patriots, and Making Patriot.

7 Blumenthal, Sidney THE CLINTON WARS
Farrar, Straus and Giroux 2003 0374125023 / 9780374125028 Hardcover Very Good/Very Good
An invaluable history of an extraordinary presidency, and the chronicle of a generation's political odyssey When in 1997 Bill Clinton appointed Sidney Blumenthal as a senior advisor, the former writer was catapulted into the front lines of the Clinton wars. From his first day in the White House until long after his appearance as th e only presidential aide ever to testify in an impeachment trial, Blumentha l acted in or witnessed nearly all the battles of the Clinton years. His ma jor new book-part history, part memoir-is the first inside account we have of the presidency of William Jefferson Clinton. The Clinton Wars begins in 1987, when Blumenthal first met Bill and Hillary Clinton. His chronicle of Clinton's first presidential campaign and first term draws on his experiences as confidant to both the President and the Fi rst Lady, and is enriched with previously unpublished revelations about bot h. This remarkable personal interpretation goes far in explaining the polar izing nature of Clinton's presence on the national scene. The narrative of Clinton's second term is even more dramatic. Blumenthal ta kes special note of the battle that was waged within the media between the President's detractors and defenders, which he expands into a vivid picture of Washington society torn apart by warring factions. But he does not negl ect the wars fought on other fronts-in Kosovo, against Congress, and for ec onomic prosperity. His remarkable book ends with the inside story of the fi ght to elect Al Gore in 2000 and extend the legacy of the Clinton-Gore Admi nistration. Every page of this unrivaled, authoritative book, with its intimate.

9 Bougarel, Xavier (Editor) INVESTIGATING SREBRENICA: INSTITUTIONS, FACTS, RESPONSIBILITIES (CONTEMPORA RY EUROPEAN HISTORY)
Berghahn Books 2012 0857454722 / 9780857454720 Hardcover Very Good
In July 1995, the Bosnian Serb Army commanded by General Ratko Mladic attac ked the enclave of Srebrenica, a UN "safe area" since 1993, and massacred a bout 8,000 Bosniac men. While the responsibility for the massacre itself la ys clearly with the Serb political and military leadership, the question of the responsibility of various international organizations and national aut horities for the fall of the enclave is still passionately discussed, and h as given rise to various rumors and conspiracy theories. Follow-up investig ations by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and by several commissions have dissipated most of these rumors and contribute d to a better knowledge of the Srebrenica events and the part played by the main local and international actors. This volume represents the first syst ematic, comparative analysis of those investigations. It brings together an alyses from both the external standpoint of academics and the inside perspe ctive of various professionals who participated directly in the inquiries, including police officers, members of parliament, high-ranking civil servan ts, and other experts. Evaluating how institutions establish facts and ascr ibe responsibilities, this volume presents a historiographical and epistemo logical reflection on the very possibility of writing a history of the pres ent time.

THE CLINTON PRESIDENCY: FIRST APPRAISALS, Campbell, Colin
14 Campbell, Colin THE CLINTON PRESIDENCY: FIRST APPRAISALS
Chatham House Pub 1995 1566430143 / 9781566430142 Paperback Good
Four years ago, the editors offered a midterm evaluation of the Bush presid ency. Now, in this anthology, a dozen political scientists assess the succe sses and failures of the Clinton presidency and the structural obstacles Cl inton faced upon entering office. The contributors look critically at Clint on's reliance on public opinion polls, his management of the White House, h is inclination to try to please too many conflicting interest groups and hi s foreign policy, but they are more forgiving of his inability to loosen Co ngressional gridlock and even praise his handling of the economy. The essay s are somewhat repetitive, as several contributors rehearse the same events of Clinton's first two years in office to illustrate their points about hi s governing style. This brand of political science is only two steps remove d from journalism. Unfortunately, those steps appear to be accessibility an d lively writing, while the play-by-play approach of some of the contributo rs sometimes obscures the big picture. Still, the anthology's exhaustivenes s makes it useful for anyone trying to make sense of Clinton's struggles in office.

15 Caro, Robert A. THE POWER BROKER: ROBERT MOSES AND THE FALL OF NEW YORK

A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. One of the most acclaimed books of our time, winner of both the Pulitzer an d the Francis Parkman prizes, The Power Broker tells the hidden story behin d the shaping (and mis-shaping) of twentieth-century New York (city and sta te) and makes public what few have known: that Robert Moses was, for almost half a century, the single most powerful man of our time in New York, the shaper not only of the city's politics but of its physical structure and th e problems of urban decline that plague us today. In revealing how Moses did it--how he developed his public authorities into a political machine that was virtually a fourth branch of government, one that could bring to their knees Governors and Mayors (from La Guardia to Lindsay) by mobilizing banks, contractors, labor unions, insurance firms, even the press and the Church, into an irresistible economic force--Robert Caro reveals how power works in all the cities of the United States. Moses built an empire and lived like an emperor. He personally conceived and completed public works costing 27 billion dollars--the greatest builder America (and probably the world) has ever known. Without ever having been elected to office, he dominated the men who were--even his most bitter enemy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, could not control him--until he finally encountered, in Nelson Rockefeller, the only man whose power (and ruthlessness in wielding it) equalled his own.

16 Chomsky, Noam 9-11: WAS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE
Seven Stories Press 2013 1609803434 / 9781609803438 Paperback Very Good
9-11: Was There an Alternative? by Noam Chomsky In 9-11, published in November 2001 and arguably the single most influential post 9-11 book, internationally renowned thinker Noam Chomsky bridged the information gap around the World Trade Center attacks, cutting through the tangle of political opportunism, expedient patriotism, and general conformity that choked off American discourse in the months immediately following. Chomsky placed the attacks in context, marshaling his deep and nuanced knowledge of American foreign policy to trace the history of American political aggression--in the Middle East and throughout Latin America as well as in Indonesia, in Afghanistan, in India and Pakistan--at the same time warning against America's increasing reliance on military rhetoric and violence in its response to the attacks, and making the critical point that the mainstream media and public intellectuals were failing to make: any escalation of violence as a response to violence will inevitably lead to further, and bloodier, attacks on innocents in America and around the world. This new edition of 9-11, published on the tenth anniversary of the attacks and featuring a new preface by Chomsky, reminds us that today, just as much as ten years ago, information and clarity remain our most valuable tools in the struggle to prevent future violence against the innocent, both at home and abroad.

19 Chomsky, Noam NEW WORLD OF INDIGENOUS RESISTANCE
City Lights Publishers 2010 0872865339 / 9780872865334 Paperback Near Fine
Indigenous societies throughout Latin America are facing difficult choices. After centuries of colonization, the ongoing struggle to preserve communal knowledge, rituals, language, traditions, and teaching and learning practi ces has taken on even more significance in the increasingly standardized wo rld of globalization. For many indigenous societies, protecting community-b ased customs has involved the rejection of state-provided education, raisin g a series of interconnected issues regarding autonomy, modernity and cultu ral sustainability. In New World of Indigenous Resistance, these questions are approached from multiple perspectives by means of an innovative exchange between linguist a nd human rights advocate Noam Chomsky, and more than twenty scholars, activ ists and educators from across the Americas. Two interviews with Chomsky open the exchange with lessons from world histo ry, linguistics, economics and anti-authoritarian philosophy, parallel hist ories of peoples worldwide who have resisted state power while attempting t o sustain or even revitalize community traditions. In response to Chomsky's ideas, voices from Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, the United States, and Uruguay dray from their first-hand experience and scholarship, speaking to, with, and at times against Chomsky's views. In a final interview Chomsky reflects upon the commentaries; the result is a nuanced intellectual and political exchange-a compelling conversation tha t offers a contemporary vision of indigenous resistance, survival and hope. "Two direct interviews with Chomsky enhance this articulate examination of challe.
