Vermeer's Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World, Brook, Timothy
1 Brook, Timothy Vermeer's Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World
Bloomsbury Press 2009 1596915994 / 9781596915992 Paperback Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. In this critical darling Vermeer's captivating and enigmatic paintings beco me windows that reveal how daily life and thought-from Delft to Beijing--we re transformed in the 17th century, when the world first became global. A Vermeer painting shows a military officer in a Dutch sitting room, talking to a laughing girl. In another canvas, fruit spills from a blue-and-white porcelain bowl. Familiar images that captivate us with their beauty--but as Timothy Brook shows us, these intimate pictures actually give us a remarkable view of an expanding world. The officer's dashing hat is made of beaver fur from North America, and it was beaver pelts from America that financed the voyages of explorers seeking routes to China-prized for the porcelains so often shown in Dutch paintings of this time, including Vermeer's. In this dazzling history, Timothy Brook uses Vermeer's works, and other contemporary images from Europe, Asia, and the Americas to trace the rapidly growing web of global trade, and the explosive, transforming, and sometimes destructive changes it wrought in the age when globalization really began.

A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: 'This fascinating book provided me with a whole new way of thinking about t he European Renaissance ... While offereing a series of elegant interpretat ions of art objects exchanged between East and West... this is also an epic story of imperial rivalry exploring the ways in which courts jostled for s upremacy through their display of magnificent art objects, many of which ar e beautifully reproduced here' - The Good Book Guide 'Books of the Year' 'C ultural history needs the wider perspective [the authors] enjoin, and, as t heir reflections suggest, it is a mistake to think one can satisfactorily e xplain anything about the European continent - its art, the growth of it sc ience, its social, political or religious history - in ignorance of its clo se relations with its eastern and southern margins. Global Interests is a v aluable corrective to the established tendency to disregard them' - Literar y Review 'impressive ... the discussion is full of remarkable examples ... there is much that will stimulate thought and excite admiration' - Art Quar terly About the Author Lisa Jardine is director of the AHRB Research Centre for Editing Lives and Letters and professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary, University of London. 3 Chicago, Judy Women and Art: Contested Territory
Watson-Guptill 1999 0823058522 / 9780823058525 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good/Very Good
This is a curiously interesting hybrid with two running commentaries per pa ge. The central space is reserved for a somewhat traditional art historical text on women artists and images of women in art by British art critic/art historian Lucie-Smith. The rest is filled with the writings of one of the most opinionated and surely the most famous U.S.-based feminist artist, Chi cago, creator of The Dinner Party. The collaboration is certainly eye-catch ing, but, despite 200 beautiful color plates, this is no coffee-table decor ation. It seems compiled to capture the attention of any browsing reader of college age and above. Many of the ten chapters might startle the average readerAthey're explicit about gender issues, bodily functions, and other od dities that are now a part of contemporary art.

David to Delacroix, Friedlaender, Walter
5 Friedlaender, Walter David to Delacroix
Harvard University Press 1952 0674194012 / 9780674194014 Paperback Good
This renowned study follows the evolution of French painting from the Revol ution through the Napoleonic era. Beginning with David's revolutionary clas sicism, Friedlaender scrutinizes the work of early-nineteenth-century artis ts against the background of their times. He reveals the baroque tendencies diffused into the art of Prudhon and the same predisposition, mixed with a strong realism, in the work of Géricault. Two distinct trends appear, deriving from Pussin and Rubens. The author follows the styles as they mature, and represents their consumation in two great masters--the refined and abstract classicism of Ingres and the baroque of Delacroix with its flamboyant colorism and exotic subjects.
