In the art market, the value of a work has never been as relative as it is today. Transformation of Nature in Art, Coomaraswamy, Ananda K.
13 Coomaraswamy, Ananda K. Transformation of Nature in Art
Dover Pubns 1937 0486203689 / 9780486203683 Paperback Good
In The Transformation of Nature in Art, Ananda Coomaraswamy explains the th eory behind medieval European and Asian art, especially art in India. He fu rther supplements the Indian theory with that of the Chinese. The first pri nciple of Asian art is that art does not exist for its own sake; it exists as means to religious conditions or experience. The comparison with medieva l European art in this respect is extremely illuminating. He further shows that both differ radically from post-Renaissance European art. Coomaraswamy first discusses the theory of art in Asia and contends that th e Indian artist did not seek an illusion of Nature; rather, he tried to cre ate a truthful suggestion of the character of the subject. In the second ch apter he examines medieval European aesthetics in terms of the fourteenth-c entury German mystic, Meister Eckhart. Subsequent chapters investigate thro ugh Indian texts the psychology of the Indian view of art. And finally, the origin and use of images in India are discussed. The late Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, curator of Indian art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, uniquely combined the roles of art historian, philosopher, orientalist, linguist, and expositor. His knowledge of the arts and handcrafts of the Orient was unsurpassed, and his numerous monographs on Oriental art either established, or revolutionized, entire fields. Coomaraswamy was one of the foremost Orientalists of his time, with an almost unmatched understanding of traditional culture. He mastered the philosophic and religious terrain of the entire premodern world, East and West; and for him primitive, medieval European, and classical

14 Elson, Verity Creating the Countryside: The Rural Idyll 1600-2017
Paul Holberton Publishing 2017 1911300105 / 9781911300106 Paperback Fine
The rural idyll is a powerful force in the British national imagination. Th is highly original and vibrant study will examine how key moments in art hi story have shaped the concept of the idyll and how contemporary artists con tinue to access and often challenge this concept. From High Art to propagan da, garden centers to air fresheners, contemporary art to computer games - a constellation of powerful images and ideas contribute to our understandin gs of the rural. This publication offers new ways of thinking about the rur al idyll and the countryside more broadly, through the innovative integrati on of a wide range of art and visual cultures. These include classic landsc apes by artists such as Blake, Claude, Constable and Turner, works of moder n British art, and contemporary works by artists who present new perspectiv es on the rural idyll. Crucially, this volume will enter these familiar and unfamiliar art works into a productive dialogue with an extensive range of visual cultures which populate everyday life now and in the past, for inst ance Frank Newbould's iconic wartime recruitment posters of 1942-44 and rur al-themed video games. In the contemporary art world the rural is seriously underrepresented as an arena of critical inquiry and artistic production. This publication will make a significant contribution towards redressing th is situation. In addition to the new scholarship on the rural idyll - by ac ademic experts from a wide range of disciplines, encompassing the spheres o f art history, contemporary art, poetry, literature, rural history, agricul ture, and everyday life - it will include interviews with ten key contempor

Lost, Stolen or Shredded: Stories of Missing Works of Art and Literature, Gekoski, Rick
20 Gekoski, Rick Lost, Stolen or Shredded: Stories of Missing Works of Art and Literature
Profile Books Ltd 2014 1846684927 / 9781846684920 Paperback Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Like Sherlock Holmes' dog in the night time, sometimes the true significanc e of things lies in their absence. Rick Gekoski tells the very human storie s that lie behind some of the greatest losses to artistic culture - and add resses the questions such disappearances raise. Some of the items are stolen (the Mona Lisa), some destroyed (like Philip L arkin's diaries) and some were lost before they even existed, like the care er of the brilliant art deco architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, which fl oundered amid a lack of cash - but behind all of them lies an often surpris ing story which reveals a lot about what art means to us. Gekoski explores the greater questions these tremendous losses raise - such as the rights artists and authors have over their own work, the importance of the search for perfection in creativity, and what motivated people to queue to see the empty space where the Mona Lisa once hung in the Louvre.
