1 Alexander, Thomas M. John Dewey's Theory of Art, Experience, and Nature: The Horizons of Feeling (S U N Y Series in Philosophy)
State Univ of New York Pr 1987 0887064256 / 9780887064258 Hardcover Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Thomas Alexander shows that the primary, guiding concern of Dewey's philoso phy is his theory of aesthetic experience. He directly challenges those cri tics, most notably Stephen Pepper and Benedetto Croce, who argued that this area is the least consistent part of Dewey's thought. The author demonstrates that the fundamental concept in Dewey's system is that of "experience" and that paradigmatic treatment of experience is to be found in Dewey's analysis of aesthetics and art. The confusions resulting from the neglect of this orientation have led to prolonged misunderstandings, eventual neglect, and unwarranted popularity for ideas at odds with the genuine thrust of Dewey's philosophical concerns. By exposing the underlying aesthetic foundations of Dewey's philosophy, Alexander aims to rectify many of these errors, generating a fruitful new interest in Dewey.

A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Hailed by Martin Heidegger as "one of France's best minds," Georges Bataille has become increasingly recognized and respected in the realm of academic and popular intellectual thought. Although Bataille died in 1962, interest in his life and writings have never been as strong as they are today--Barthes, Foucault, Derrida, and Kristeva have all acknowledged their debt to him. In his book, On Nietzsche, as translated by Bruce Boone, Bataille comes as close as he would ever come to formulating his own unique system of philosophy. One could say that reading Nietzsche was something of a revelation to Bataille, and profoundly affected his life. In 1915, in a crisis of guilt after leaving his blind father in the hands of the Germans, Bataille converted to Catholicism. It was Nietzsche's work that lead him to abandon traditional religion for an idiosyncratic form of godless mysticism. In this volume, Bataille becomes, and goes beyond, Nietzsche, assuming Nietzsche's thought where he left off--with God's death. At the heart of this work is Bataille's exploration of how one can have a spiritual life outside religion. On Nietzsche is essentially a journal that brilliantly mixes observations with ruminations in fragments, aphorisms, poems, myths, quotations, and images against the background of World War II and the German occupation. Bataille has a unique way of moving breezily from abstraction to confession, and from theology to eroticism. He skillfully weaves together his own internal exper

Principles of Human Knowledge and Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philono us, Berkeley, George
3 Berkeley, George Principles of Human Knowledge and Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philono us
Penguin Publishing Group 1988 0140432930 / 9780140432930 Paperback Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Whether viewed as extreme skepticism or enlightened common sense, the writings of Berkeley are a major influence on modern philosophy. Bishop Berkeley (1685-1753) was one of the great British empirical philosophers. He believed that the existence of material objects depends on their being perceived and The Principles of Human Knowledge sets out this denial of non-mental material reality. At first his views were unfavorably received by the London intelligentsia, and the entertaining Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous are a clarification of the Realist argument and a response to accusations of atheism and skepticism. In the nineteenth century John Stuart Mill wrote that he considered Berkeley's work to be of "greatest philosophic genius," and it is true to say that its Immaterialism has influenced many recent philosophers.

In Conversations on Consciousness, Susan Blackmore interviews some of the g reat minds of our time, a who's who of eminent thinkers, all of whom have d evoted much of their lives to understanding the concept of consciousness. T he interviewees, ranging from major philosophers to renowned scientists, ta lk candidly with Blackmore about some of the key philosophical issues confr onting us in a series of conversations that are revealing, insightful, and stimulating. They ruminate on the nature of consciousness (is it something apart from the brain?) and discuss if it is even possible to understand the human mind. Some of these thinkers say no, but most believe that we will p ierce the mystery surrounding consciousness, and that neuroscience will pro vide the key. Blackmore goes beyond the issue of consciousness to ask other intriguing questions: Is there free will? (A question which yields many co nflicted replies, with most saying yes and no.) If not, how does this effec t the way you live your life; and more broadly, how has your work changed t he way you live? Paired with an introduction and extensive glossary that provide helpful background information, these provocative conversations illuminate how some of the greatest minds tackle some of the most difficult questions about human nature.

7 Bono, Edward De The De Bono Code Book
Penguin Books Ltd 2001 0140287779 / 9780140287776 Paperback Near Fine
Language has been the biggest help to human progress. But, ironically, lang uage has also become the barrier to its own development. We are locked in t o words and concepts that are limited and out of date. These force us to se e the world in a very old-fashioned way. Like any self-organizing system, l anguage has become bogged down in its own equilibrium. The marvellous flexi bility of language for description does not enable us to hold complex conce pts in our minds. Such concepts exist only while we describe them. The purp ose of the two code systems put forward in this book is to allow us to desi gn, hold and use complicated new ideas. since new words would sound bizarre and grotesque, the new concepts are expressed in a number code. This is no different from remembering and using telephone numbers: some you know and others you look up. There are a wide range of codes in this book which help overcome the language barriers in anything from relationships to travel. A n important and powerful "pre-code" is also given. The codes presented here are just the beginning of the limitless range of the De Bono Code.

10 Burke, Kenneth Permanence and Change: An Anatomy of Purpose, Third edition
University of California Pre 1984 0520041461 / 9780520041462 Paperback Good
Performance and Change was written and first published in the depths of the Great Depression. Attitudes Toward History followed it two years later. Th ese were revolutionary texts in the theory of communication, and, as classi cs, they retain their surcharge of energy. Permanence and Change treats hum an communication in terms of ideal cooperation, whereas Attitudes Towards H istory characterizes tactics and patterns of conflict typical of actual hum an associations. It is in Permanence and Change that Burke establishes in p ath-breaking fashion that form permeates society just as it does poetry and the arts. Hence, his master idea that forms of art are not exclusively aes thetic: the cycles of a storm, the gradations of a sunrise, the stages of a n epidemic, the undoing of Prince Hamlet are all instances of progressive f orm. This new Edition of Permanence and Change reprints Hugh Dalziel Duncan 's long sociological introduction and includes a substantial new afterward in which Burke reexamines his early ideas in light of subsequent developmen ts in his own thinking and in social theory.

'The Master said, "If a man sets his heart on benevolence, he will be free from evil"' The Analects are a collection of Confucius's sayings brought together by hi s pupils shortly after his death in 497 BC. Together they express a philoso phy, or a moral code, by which Confucius, one of the most humane thinkers o f all time, believed everyone should live. Upholding the ideals of wisdom, self-knowledge, courage and love of one's fellow man, he argued that the pu rsuit of virtue should be every individual's supreme goal. And, while follo wing the Way, or the truth, might not result in immediate or material gain, Confucius showed that it could nevertheless bring its own powerful and las ting spiritual rewards.
