1 Ayer, A. J. HUME: A VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION
Oxford University Press 2001 0192854062 / 9780192854063 Paperback Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Hume's "naturalist" approach to a wide variety of philosophical topics resulted in highly original theories about perception, self-identity, causation, morality, politics, and religion, all of which are discussed in this stimulating introduction by A.J. Ayer, himself one of the twentieth century's most important philosophers. Ayer also gives an account of Hume's fascinating life and character, and includes generous quotations from Hume's lucid and often witty writings.

2 Berkeley, George A TREATISE CONCERNING THE PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN KNOWLEDGE (COSIMO CLASSICS PH ILOSOPHY)
Cosimo Classics 2005 1596052821 / 9781596052826 Paperback Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. It is indeed an opinion strangely prevailing amongst men that houses, mountains, rivers, and, in a word, all sensible objects have an existence, natural or real, distinct from their being perceived by the understanding. -from "On the Principles of Human Knowledge" Forming a triangle of British empiricism with Locke and Hume, George Berkeley's direct influence on modern thought cannot be overstated. From the American Founding Fathers, who looked to him as the pioneer of their idealism, to the reality-questioning motives of quantum physics, Berkeley's odd, profound view of the nature of human perception, a sense he trusted implicitly, has in turn shaped our perception of the universe at large. Dismissed as an impractical dreamer, a disaffected anti-authoritarian, even a madman in his time, Berkeley here shifts the ground under the feet of humanity, questioning everything and finding fundamental freedom in human will and action. His conclusions remain as wise and inspiring as they were almost three hundred years ago, when he first shared them with the world in 1710. Irish scientist, philosopher, and writer GEORGE BERKELEY (1685-1753) also wrote An Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision (1709).

PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN KNOWLEDGE AND THREE DIALOGUES BETWEEN HYLAS AND PHILONO US, Berkeley, George
3 Berkeley, George PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN KNOWLEDGE AND THREE DIALOGUES BETWEEN HYLAS AND PHILONO US
Penguin Publishing Group 1988 0140432930 / 9780140432930 Paperback Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Whether viewed as extreme skepticism or enlightened common sense, the writings of Berkeley are a major influence on modern philosophy. Bishop Berkeley (1685-1753) was one of the great British empirical philosophers. He believed that the existence of material objects depends on their being perceived and The Principles of Human Knowledge sets out this denial of non-mental material reality. At first his views were unfavorably received by the London intelligentsia, and the entertaining Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous are a clarification of the Realist argument and a response to accusations of atheism and skepticism. In the nineteenth century John Stuart Mill wrote that he considered Berkeley's work to be of "greatest philosophic genius," and it is true to say that its Immaterialism has influenced many recent philosophers.

THE DE BONO CODE BOOK, Bono, Edward De
6 Bono, Edward De THE DE BONO CODE BOOK
Penguin Books Ltd 2001 0140287779 / 9780140287776 Paperback Near Fine
Language has been the biggest help to human progress. But, ironically, lang uage has also become the barrier to its own development. We are locked in t o words and concepts that are limited and out of date. These force us to se e the world in a very old-fashioned way. Like any self-organizing system, l anguage has become bogged down in its own equilibrium. The marvellous flexi bility of language for description does not enable us to hold complex conce pts in our minds. Such concepts exist only while we describe them. The purp ose of the two code systems put forward in this book is to allow us to desi gn, hold and use complicated new ideas. since new words would sound bizarre and grotesque, the new concepts are expressed in a number code. This is no different from remembering and using telephone numbers: some you know and others you look up. There are a wide range of codes in this book which help overcome the language barriers in anything from relationships to travel. A n important and powerful "pre-code" is also given. The codes presented here are just the beginning of the limitless range of the De Bono Code.

'The Master said, "If a man sets his heart on benevolence, he will be free from evil"' The Analects are a collection of Confucius's sayings brought together by hi s pupils shortly after his death in 497 BC. Together they express a philoso phy, or a moral code, by which Confucius, one of the most humane thinkers o f all time, believed everyone should live. Upholding the ideals of wisdom, self-knowledge, courage and love of one's fellow man, he argued that the pu rsuit of virtue should be every individual's supreme goal. And, while follo wing the Way, or the truth, might not result in immediate or material gain, Confucius showed that it could nevertheless bring its own powerful and las ting spiritual rewards. This edition contains a detailed introduction exploring the concepts of the original work, a bibliography and glossary and appendices on Confucius him self, The Analects and the disciples who compiled them. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. 10 Dennett, Daniel C. FREEDOM EVOLVES
Penguin Books, Limited (UK) 2004 0140283897 / 9780140283891 Paperback Very Good
Daniel C. Dennett's Freedom Evolves tackles the most important question of human existence - is there really such a thing as free will? How can humans make genuinely independent choices if we are just a cluster of cells and g enes in a world determined by scientific laws? Here, Daniel Dennett provide s an impassioned defense of free will. But rather than freedom being an ete rnal, unchanging condition of our existence, in reality, he reveals, it has evolved: just like life on the planet and the air we breathe. Evolution is the key to resolving this greatest of philosophical questions - and to und erstanding our place in the world as uniquely free agents. Dennett shows th at far from there being an incompatibility between contemporary science and the traditional vision of freedom and morality, it is only recently that s cience has advanced to the point where we can see how we came to have our u nique kind of freedom. 'A serious book with a brilliant message' Matt Ridle y, author of The Red Queen 'Powerful and ingenious ... The definitive argum ent that the human mind is a product of evolution' John Gray, Independent ' A book of sparkling brio and seemingly effortless panache ... Dennett at hi s best is as good as it gets' Spectator Daniel C. Dennett is one of the mos t original and provocative thinkers in the world. A brilliant polemicist an d philosopher, he is famous for challenging unexamined orthodoxies, and an outspoken supporter of the Brights movement. His books include Brainstorms, Brainchildren, Elbow Room, Breaking the Spell, Darwin's Dangerous Idea and Freedom Evolves. Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly "Trading in

PROPHET, Gibran, Kahlil
19 Gibran, Kahlil PROPHET
Penguin UK 1992 0140194479 / 9780140194470 Paperback Very Good
In a distant, timeless place, a mysterious prophet walks the sands. At the moment of his departure, he wishes to offer the people gifts but possesses nothing. The people gather round, each asks a question of the heart, and th e man's wisdom is his gift. It is Gibran's gift to us, as well, for Gibran' s prophet is rivaled in his wisdom only by the founders of the world's grea t religions. On the most basic topics--marriage, children, friendship, work , pleasure--his words have a power and lucidity that in another era would s urely have provoked the description "divinely inspired." Free of dogma, fre e of power structures and metaphysics, consider these poetic, moving aphori sms a 20th-century supplement to all sacred traditions--as millions of othe r readers already have.
