Principles of Human Knowledge and Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philono us, Berkeley, George
1 Berkeley, George Principles of Human Knowledge and Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philono us
Penguin Publishing Group 1988 0140432930 / 9780140432930 Paperback Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Whether viewed as extreme skepticism or enlightened common sense, the writings of Berkeley are a major influence on modern philosophy. Bishop Berkeley (1685-1753) was one of the great British empirical philosophers. He believed that the existence of material objects depends on their being perceived and The Principles of Human Knowledge sets out this denial of non-mental material reality. At first his views were unfavorably received by the London intelligentsia, and the entertaining Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous are a clarification of the Realist argument and a response to accusations of atheism and skepticism. In the nineteenth century John Stuart Mill wrote that he considered Berkeley's work to be of "greatest philosophic genius," and it is true to say that its Immaterialism has influenced many recent philosophers.

In Conversations on Consciousness, Susan Blackmore interviews some of the g reat minds of our time, a who's who of eminent thinkers, all of whom have d evoted much of their lives to understanding the concept of consciousness. T he interviewees, ranging from major philosophers to renowned scientists, ta lk candidly with Blackmore about some of the key philosophical issues confr onting us in a series of conversations that are revealing, insightful, and stimulating. They ruminate on the nature of consciousness (is it something apart from the brain?) and discuss if it is even possible to understand the human mind. Some of these thinkers say no, but most believe that we will p ierce the mystery surrounding consciousness, and that neuroscience will pro vide the key. Blackmore goes beyond the issue of consciousness to ask other intriguing questions: Is there free will? (A question which yields many co nflicted replies, with most saying yes and no.) If not, how does this effec t the way you live your life; and more broadly, how has your work changed t he way you live? Paired with an introduction and extensive glossary that provide helpful background information, these provocative conversations illuminate how some of the greatest minds tackle some of the most difficult questions about human nature.

5 Bono, Edward De The De Bono Code Book
Penguin Books Ltd 2001 0140287779 / 9780140287776 Paperback Near Fine
Language has been the biggest help to human progress. But, ironically, lang uage has also become the barrier to its own development. We are locked in t o words and concepts that are limited and out of date. These force us to se e the world in a very old-fashioned way. Like any self-organizing system, l anguage has become bogged down in its own equilibrium. The marvellous flexi bility of language for description does not enable us to hold complex conce pts in our minds. Such concepts exist only while we describe them. The purp ose of the two code systems put forward in this book is to allow us to desi gn, hold and use complicated new ideas. since new words would sound bizarre and grotesque, the new concepts are expressed in a number code. This is no different from remembering and using telephone numbers: some you know and others you look up. There are a wide range of codes in this book which help overcome the language barriers in anything from relationships to travel. A n important and powerful "pre-code" is also given. The codes presented here are just the beginning of the limitless range of the De Bono Code.

'The Master said, "If a man sets his heart on benevolence, he will be free from evil"' The Analects are a collection of Confucius's sayings brought together by hi s pupils shortly after his death in 497 BC. Together they express a philoso phy, or a moral code, by which Confucius, one of the most humane thinkers o f all time, believed everyone should live. Upholding the ideals of wisdom, self-knowledge, courage and love of one's fellow man, he argued that the pu rsuit of virtue should be every individual's supreme goal. And, while follo wing the Way, or the truth, might not result in immediate or material gain, Confucius showed that it could nevertheless bring its own powerful and las ting spiritual rewards. This edition contains a detailed introduction exploring the concepts of the original work, a bibliography and glossary and appendices on Confucius him self, The Analects and the disciples who compiled them. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world.
