Holy Smoke : A Novel, Campion, Anna
8 Campion, Anna Holy Smoke : A Novel
Miramax Books 2000 0786885637 / 9780786885633 Paperback Near Fine
Sisters Anna and Jane Campion (the Australian directors responsible for suc h films as Loaded and The Piano) have collaborated on this intriguing thoug h rambling first novel. Twenty-year-old Ruth Baron is dragged back from Ind ia, where she has joined a bizarre cult, to her parent's home outside of Sy dney. Once there, her family forces her to undergo an intensive "exiting" p rocess meant to de-program her from the insidious influence of the cult's l eader, Chidaatma Baba. The expert recruited for the job is P.J. (John) Wate rs, a world-weary fellow in his mid-50s who flies in from New York and secl udes himself with the rebellious young woman for the three-day intensive tr eatment. At first, they circle each other suspiciously; John is aggressive, and Ruth fights him every step of the way. Soon, distrust gives way to a d angerous and undeniable mutual passion. Other characters in this heaving, b reathless novelARuth's vague, teary mother, older brothers and bumbling sis ter-in-lawAseem to function as clueless comic foils for the burgeoning inte nsity between Ruth and John. The authors successfully demonstrate the seduc tive pull of cults and are at their best when transforming Ruth's need for spiritual guidance into her psychosexual delirium. The narrative, told from the alternating points of view of John and Ruth, has a hazy, druggy qualit y, which is ambiguous and confusing. The fact that this tale is the book ve rsion of an upcoming film starring Harvey Keitel and Kate Winslet contribut es to the reader's likely awareness that thenovel is a sketchy, early versi on of its more fitting cinematic manifestation.

The Constant Gardener: A Novel, Carre, John Le
9 Carre, John Le The Constant Gardener: A Novel
Pocket Star 2005 1416503900 / 9781416503903 Paperback Very Good+
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: British diplomat Justin Quayle, complacent raiser of freesias and doting hu sband of the stunning, much younger Tessa, has tended his own garden in Nai robi too long. Tessa is Justin's opposite, a fiery reformer, "that rarest t hing, a lawyer who believes in justice," whose campaigns have earned her a nickname: "the Princess Diana of the African poor." But now Tessa has turne d up naked, raped, and dead on a mysterious visit to remote Lake Turkana in Kenya. Her traveling companion (and lover?), the handsome Congolese-Belgia n doctor Arnold Bluhm, has vanished. So has Quayle's complacency. Tessa had been compiling data against a multinational drug company that use s helpless Africans as guinea pigs to test a tuberculosis remedy with unfor tunately fatal side effects. Her report was destroyed by her husband's supe riors; was she? It's all somehow connected to the sinister British firm Hou se of ThreeBees, whose ad boasts that it's "buzzy for the health of Africa! " John le Carré symbolically associates ThreeBees with an ominous buzz in t he Nairobi morgue: "Over [the corpses], in a swaying, muddy mist, hung the flies, snoring on a single note." The home office tries to take Quayle in out of the cold. He cleverly eludes their clammy embrace, turns spy, and takes off on a global chase to avenge Tessa and solve her murder. Le Carré has lost none of his gift for setting vivid scenes in far-flung places expertly described: London, Germany, Saskatchewan, Kenya. His sprinting thriller prose remains in great shape. And thanks to his 16 years in the British Foreign Office, his merciless send-up

Enemy at the Gates (Classic Military), Craig, William
12 Craig, William Enemy at the Gates (Classic Military)
Penguin Books Ltd 2001 0141003162 / 9780141003160 Paperback Fine
Stalingrad, the bloodiest battle in the history of warfare, cost the lives of nearly two million men and women. It signaled the beginning of the end f or the Third Reich of Adolf Hitler; it foretold the Russian juggernaut that would destroy Berlin and make the Soviet Union a superpower. As Winston Ch urchill characterized the result of the conflict at Stalingrad: "¿the hinge of fate had turned." William Craig, author and historian, has painstakingl y recreated the details of this great battle: from the hot summer of August 1942, when the German armies smashed their way across southern Russia towa rd the Volga River, through the struggle for Stalingrad-a city Hitler had n ever meant to capture and Stalin never meant to defend-on to the destructio n of the supposedly invincible German Sixth Army and the terror of the Russ ian prison camps in frozen Siberia. Craig has interviewed hundreds of survi vors of the battle-both Russian and German soldiers and civilians-and has w oven their incredible experiences into the fabric of hitherto unknown docum ents. The resulting mosaic is epic in scope, and the human tragedy that unf olds is awesome.

13 Dinesen, Isak Out of Africa & Shadows On The Grass
Vintage 1985 0394742117 / 9780394742113 Paperback Very Good
Out of Africa is Karin Blixen's love letter to the country she called home for nearly 20 years. Arriving in British East Africa (now Kenya) from Denma rk in 1914, Blixen--Isak Dinesen was her pen name--was immediately seduced by the landscape of the Ngong hill country, not to mention the animals and people who inhabited it. Her descriptions bring this wonderland alive for r eaders: out on safari, she recalls the movements of a group of giraffes, "i n their queer, inimitable, vegetative gracefulness, as if it were not a her d of animals but a family of rare, long-stemmed, speckled gigantic flowers slowly advancing." Blixen laces into her reverie the account of her coffee plantation--which ultimately succumbed to high altitude, droughts, and tumb ling international coffee prices--and tales of her friendships with other c olonials in Nairobi. But one should read her memoir for the stories she tel ls of cooking with her Kikuyu chef (who almost never ate any of the Europea n delicacies he so expertly created), adopting an abandoned infant antelope , flying over the countryside in her lover's plane--"the greatest, most tra nsporting pleasure of my life on the farm"--and watching the children of he r tenant farmers collect at her house each day at noon for the spectacle of her cuckoo clock.

Cracker (BFI TV Classics), Duguid, Mark
14 Duguid, Mark Cracker (BFI TV Classics)
British Film Institute 2009 1844572633 / 9781844572632 Paperback Near Fine
A tight clean softcover, no markings throughout: Cracker (1993-1996; 2007) was one of the stand-out television series of the 1990s, reinvigorating the television crime drama and winning both critical plaudits and ratings success. In Fitz, its flawed, self-destructive, arrog ant but brilliant criminal psychologist hero, the series created one of the decade's most iconic characters, in the process turning Robbie Coltrane fr om a respected comic performer into an award-winning actor and a genuine st ar. Cracker played freely with the conventions of the detective thriller, focusing less on the ‘who' of crime than the ‘why'. As such it followed a Catholic preoccupation with deep motive and moral responsibility shared by Fitz and his creator Jimmy McGovern, the first and most dominant of the series' three writers. Through three series and two specials, Cracker explored the causes and consequences of crime, while never losing sight of the moral choices made by its perpetrators.

True Confessions, Dunne, John Gregory
15 Dunne, John Gregory True Confessions
Pocket 1981 0671422286 / 9780671422288 Paperback Good
In 1940s Los Angeles, an unidentified murder victim is found bisected in a shadowy lot. A catchy nickname is given her in jest-"The Virgin Tramp"-and suddenly a "nice little homicide that would have drifted off the front page s in a couple of days" becomes a storm center. Two brothers, Tom and Des Spellacy, are at the heart of this powerful novel of Irish-Catholic life in Southern California just after World War II. Pla yed in the film version by Robert Duvall and Robert De Niro respectively, T om is a homicide detective and Des is a priest on the rise within the Churc h. The murder investigation provides the background against which are playe d the ever changing loyalties of the two brothers. Theirs is a world of fav ors and fixes, power and promises, inhabited by priests and pimps, cops and contractors, boxers and jockeys and lesbian fight promoters and lawyers wh o know how to put the fix in. A fast-paced and often hilarious classic of contemporary fiction, True Confessions is about a crime that has no solutions, only victims. More important, it is about the complex relationship between Tom and Des Spellacy, each tainted with the guilt and hostility that separate brothers.
