This book is about William Willis' tale of how he went to St. Laurent Du Ma roni, to free Bernard Carnot - A man he never met or knew. While laid up in New York City, Willis encounters landlady Madame Carnot, m other of Bernard Carnot. She had left France after her son was sentenced to the penal colony of French Guiana for a murder he supposedly did not do. W illis, a sailor by trade, befriends the Carnot family, and after receiving $1000 for a work related injury decides to take on the task traveling to Fr ench Guiana to free Bernard Carnot. The book is about how he travels to French Guiana via Suriname and sets about the task of finding Bernard Carnot by living among the convicts and liberes. Along the way he befriends a convict Jules and together they find Carnot.
