2 Shakespeare, William King Lear
New York Washington Square Press 1993 0-671-72272-7 / 9780671722722 Paperback Fine
Tragedy in five acts by William Shakespeare, performed in 1605-06 and publi shed in a quarto edition in 1608. One of Shakespeare's finest tragedies, th e work displays a pessimism and nihilism that make it a 20th-century favori te. The aging King Lear decides to divide his kingdom among his three daugh ters, allotting each a portion in proportion to the eloquence of her declar ation of love. The hypocritical Goneril and Regan make grand pronouncements and are rewarded; Cordelia, the youngest daughter, who truly loves Lear, r efuses to make an insincere speech to prove her love and is disinherited. T he two older sisters mock Lear and renege on their promise to support him. Cast out, the king slips into madness and wanders about accompanied by his faithful Fool. He is aided by the Earl of Kent, who, though banished from t he kingdom for having supported Cordelia, has remained in Britain disguised as a peasant. Kent brings Lear to Cordelia, who cares for him and helps hi m regain his reason. The Earl of Gloucester likewise spurns his honest son, Edgar, and believes his conniving illegitimate son, Edmund. Edmund allies himself with Regan and Goneril to defend Britain against the French army mo bilized by Cordelia. He turns his father over to Cornwall--who gouges out G loucester's eyes--then imprisons Cordelia and Lear, but he is defeated in b attle by Edgar. Jealous of Edmund's romantic attentions to Regan, Goneril p oisons her and commits suicide. Cordelia is hanged. Lear, broken, dies with her body in his arms.

5 Shakespeare, William Midsummer Night's Dream, A (Penguin) (Shakespeare, Penguin)
Harmondsworth Penguin Classics December 17, 19 0-14-070702-6 / 9780140707021 Paperback Fine
Comedy in five acts by William Shakespeare, produced in 1595-96 and publish ed in 1600 in a quarto edition from the author's fair copy. It has long bee n the most popular of Shakespeare's comedies. Theseus, Duke of Athens, is a bout to wed Hippolyta, the Amazon queen. Meanwhile, two lovers, Hermia and Lysander, hide in the woods when Hermia's father demands that she marry Dem etrius. Hoping to win his favor, Helena tells Demetrius of their whereabout s, and the two go to the woods in search of the fugitives. The forest is al so full of fairies who have come for the Duke's wedding. After their king, Oberon, argues with his queen, Titania, he tells his mischievous servant Pu ck to drop magic juice into her eyes as she sleeps. The magic juice will ma ke her love the first person she sees when she awakes. He also tells Puck t o drop the juice into Demetrius' eyes, but Puck confuses Lysander with Deme trius and as a result Lysander falls in love with Helena. So does Demetrius , when Oberon tries to correct Puck's mistake. In the same woods a group of artisans are rehearsing a play for the Duke's wedding. Ever playful, Puck gives one of the "mechanicals," Bottom, an ass's head; when Titania awakens , she falls in love with Bottom. Oberon's magic then restores Titania and t he four lovers to their original states. The Duke invites the two couples t o join him and Hippolyta in a triple wedding. The wedding celebration featu res Bottom's troupe in a comically inept performance of their play, The Mos t Lamentable Comedy and Most Cruel Death of Pyramus and Thisbe.

6 Shakespeare, William Much Ado About Nothing
New York Washington Square Press 1995 0-671-72280-8 / 9780671722807 Paperback Fine
Comedy in five acts by William Shakespeare, performed in 1598-99 and printe d in a quarto edition from the author's fair papers in 1600. The play takes an ancient theme--that of a woman falsely accused of unfaithfulness--to br illiant comedic heights. Claudio is deceived by his jealous cousin into bel ieving that his lover, Hero, is unfaithful--a plot unveiled by the bumbling constables Dogberry and Verges. Meanwhile, Beatrice and Benedick have "a k ind of merry war" between them, matching wits in clever repartee that antic ipates other playfully teasing literary couples. Each is tricked into belie ving that the other is in love, which allows the true affection between the m to grow. Both couples are united at the end, after Hero's simulated resur rection from the dead. In this play Shakespeare eschewed devices of obvious magic or disguise of sex, which he employed in other comedies; the wit and ambiguity of the dialogue and the exquisite pacing of the action sustain t he play, which remains popular in repertory.
