2 Rendell, Ruth A Sight for Sore Eyes
Arrow Books Ltd September 2, 19 0-09-927145-1 / 9780099271451 Paperback Very Good
A pair of English teens, Teddy and Francine (who have grown up in dysfuncti onal families where common parenting faults are taken to extremes), meet an d think that in each other they might find the beauty and freedom their own lives are lacking. Their troubled affair takes a while to get going, but o nce it does, Rendell's sharp characterizations and idiosyncratic descriptio ns are riveting. Though several deaths occur in the book, the only real mys tery is that of the murder of Francine's mother, which Francine overheard ( near the novel's beginning) when she was seven. Instead, Rendell (Road Rage , etc.) focuses more on how a few sedately bizarre ticks can build exponent ially into insanity. Francine's stepmother, for example, progresses from si mple worry about her stepdaughter's well-being to obsessive anxiety that bo rders on dementia. Rendell follows the story's principal objects as closely as she does its characters: the diamond and sapphire engagement ring that Teddy's indifferent mother finds in a public bathroom; the video case in wh ich Francine's mother hid her love letters, the painting of two young lover s that shows Teddy the perfect beauty he would kill for. Rendell leaves not hing and no one unaccounted for, from the looks given by the neighbors over the fence to the idle thoughts that pass through characters' minds when th ey scan a room. A tour-de-force of psychological suspense, the novel culmin ates in a dramatic climax that's as unforgettable as what has preceded it.

A highly collectible, tight clean first edition, protected in a new brodart wrapper, unclipped dustjacket, this is not an Ex-Lib or a BCE/BOMC edition. In Adam and Eve and Pinch Me, Ruth Rendell once again tackles the dark and dangerous side of human psychology. It is this quality that defines her as a writer and distinguishes her from the other British Queens of Crime: PD James and Minette Walters (although some would argue that Val McDermid is now in that category). She take the reader into a more sinister and threatening world than any of her contemporaries, and there is a reason why she remains non-pareil in this territory.

10 Rendell, Ruth Harm Done
Seal Books 2000 0-09-928134-1 / 9780099281344 Paperback Near Fine
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: With Harm Done, Rendell has added a remarkable strand of acute social comme ntary to a book that still functions as an utterly compelling piece of dete ctive fiction. With the controversial subject of paedophilia, she takes the mainstay of her work--problems of modern life--to a level of passion and c ommitment that gives the book a truly powerful underpinning. Back in the familiar Sussex town of Kingsmarkham, Rendell's dogged sleuth W exford is investigating the strange abductions of two young girls: Rachel, a bright middle-class student, and Lizzie, a mentally disabled 16-year-old living with her unsympathetic parents on a grim council estate. When both g irls return home, apparently unharmed, Wexford is faced with a curious myst ery: what really happened to them? As Wexford begins to uncover the disturb ing truth, the dark psychological world that Rendell is so adroit at explor ing suddenly comes into focus. And her gift for sharp but concise character isation remains untouchable as in the case of a reluctant witness: " ''We d on't talk about that sort of thing'. She very nearly but not quite tossed h er head." --Barry Forshaw --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. P roduct Description Two young girls disappear then return home unharmed some days later. Chief Inspector Wexford is concerned about a paedophile who has recently been released back into the community but he cannot foresee the series of serious crimes waiting to happen.
