Having penned Election, a great novel of high-school manners, Tom Perrotta gives us Joe College, a great novel about college mores. In 1982, one Yal e junior struggles with George Eliot, dorm blanket bingo, dining-hall dish -line duty, a massive crush on a girl in love with his favorite prof, dail y cards and calls from a girl back home in New Jersey, and a lush profusio n of authentically individual yet instantly recognizable undergrad eccentr ics. After an evening of ritualistic bong hits, kimchee feasting, and symp athetic discussion of Leon Czolgosz, the anarchist who shot President McKi nley, Danny thinks of his parents: "Was this what they scrimped and sacri ficed for all those years? So their son could spend his Tuesday nights dri nking beer, smoking dope, eating weird food, and learning to see the assas sin's side of the story?"

Dave works as a courier during the week, but his real passion is playing gu itar on weekends with a pretty good New Jersey wedding band. They play in p laces that sport "the unmistakable odor of mediocrity." Their repertoire in cludes "a ten-minute medley [of] 'I Will Survive,' 'Boogie-Oogie-Oogie'...c apped by a full-length version of 'Y.M.C.A.,' a song that had returned with a vengeance from the land of musical oblivion." For 15 years, Dave has dri fted through an on-and-off relationship with the same girl, Julie. Then one night he witnesses the on-stage death of an older lead singer with another band. Shaken, he returns home and without blinking says to Julie, "Let's g et married." Then panic sets in. He gets involved with a sexy bohemian poet even as Julie begs him to give up the band, something he had never even re motely considered. At times hilariously funny, at others times wonderfully lyrical, and filled with subtle as well as obvious pleasures, this is an aw fully good novel about a young man's reluctance to grow up.
