1 Morgan, Richard Altered Carbon
Gollancz September 9, 20 0-575-07390-X / 9780575073906 Paperback As New
A crisp clean softcover (as new). This fast-paced, densely textured, impressive first novel is an intriguing hybrid of William Gibson's Neuromancer and Norman Spinrad's Deus X. In the 25th century, it's difficult to die a final death. Humans are issued a cort ical stack, implanted into their bodies, into which consciousness is "digit ized" and from which-unless the stack is hopelessly damaged-their conscious ness can be downloaded ("resleeved") with its memory intact, into a new bod y. While the Vatican is trying to make resleeving (at least of Catholics) i llegal, centuries-old aristocrat Laurens Bancroft brings Takeshi Kovacs (an Envoy, a specially trained soldier used to being resleeved and trained to soak up clues from new environments) to Earth, where Kovacs is resleeved in to a cop's body to investigate Bancroft's first mysterious, stack-damaging death. To solve the case, Kovacs must destroy his former Envoy enemies; out wit Bancroft's seductive, wily wife; dabble in United Nations politics; tru st an AI that projects itself in the form of Jimi Hendrix; and deal with hi s growing physical and emotional attachment to Kristin Ortega, the police l ieutenant who used to love the body he's been given. Kovacs rockets from th e seediest hellholes on Earth, through virtual reality torture, into severa l gory firefights, and on to some exotic sexual escapades. Morgan's 25th-ce ntury Earth is convincing, while the questions he poses about how much Self is tied to body chemistry and how the rich believe themselves above the la w are especially timely. 3 Morgan, Richard Broken Angels
Gollancz December 4, 200 0-575-07550-3 / 9780575075504 Paperback Very Good
Despite its slick formulaic structure, Morgan's SF-hardboiled hybrid, the s equel to the well-received Altered Carbon, bursts with energy and intellige nce. Protagonist Takeshi Kovacs is the product of a brutal future in which corporations and politicians fight for supremacy. Humanity has spread to th e stars by deciphering charts left behind by the long-extinct Martians. Sin ce people haven't discovered how the Martians surpassed the speed of light, however, they usually travel through space by broadcasting their digitaliz ed personalities from one planet to another and having them installed in ne w bodies, a technique that gives virtual immortality to the most unscrupulo us individuals. One such is Kovacs, a young sociopath whom the interstellar government transformed into a super warrior before he went freelance. Kova cs resembles a smarter and deadlier Mike Hammer; part of the pleasure is wa tching him not only use his skills and conditioning but also struggle past his limitations to develop empathy for other humans. The few people Kovacs gets close to are the team that accompanies him on an expedition to claim t he ultimate Martian relic-a functioning FTL starship. Morgan is good at pre senting Kovacs's mastery of high-tech weapons and other gadgets, as well as his reactions to disturbing alien artifacts. The mystery aspect of the sto ry is also well handled, always hovering in the background of the violent a ction as Kovacs gathers clues. It all adds up to a superior, satisfying cyb erpunk noir adventure.
