Matsuoka, Takashi Autumn Bridge Delacorte Press August 3, 2004 0-385-33641-1 / 9780385336413 1st Edition Hardcover Near Fine/Near Fine A crisp clean first edition, no markings throughout, not an ex-lib: Matsuoka continues the chronicle of Japanese nobleman Lord Genji he began in Cloud of Sparrows (2002). In 1867, American missionary Emily Gibson finds herself increasingly drawn to Genji, her Japanese benefactor. For his part, Genji, the head of the beleaguered Okumichi clan, struggles to control his secret admiration for the entirely unsuitable foreigner as he attempts to reconcile the increasingly obsolete world of the shoguns and the samurai warriors with the inevitable encroachment of Western ways and customs into his homeland. Translating a series of secret scrolls containing the history and prophesies of the Okumichi clan, Emily is startled to realize that the past reflects the present when she uncovers an ancient tale of treachery, valor, and forbidden love that seems to both parallel and presage her own situation. Stretching back and forth through the centuries, Matsuoka weaves a timeless tale of intrigue and romance. Price:

Matsuoka, Takashi Cloud of Sparrows Dell August 26, 2003 0-440-24085-9 / 9780440240853 Paperback Very Good+ Following in the substantial footsteps of filmmaker Akiro Kurosawa and Shog un author James Clavell is Takashi Matsuoka, whose action-packed debut nove l, Cloud of Sparrows, unfolds as the age of the samurai warrior starts to w ane. The year is 1861, and Lord Genji of Akaoka, last in line of the Okamic hi clan, welcomes missionaries Emily, Matthew, and Zephaniah to Japan. Cut off from the West for more than 2,000 years, Japan is as completely unprepa red for these outsiders as the missionaries are for geishas and honor killi ngs. Genji, his geisha love Heiko, and the missionaries suddenly find thems elves in the middle of several nefarious plots to overthrow the Okamichi le ader from as far away as the shogun's palace and as close as Genji's own he nchmen. Genji and his visitors journey together across treacherous terrain to seek refuge at the faraway Cloud of Sparrows palace. Although it's a rip -roaring yarn full of ambushes, swordfights, cross-cultural friction, love, and prophetic visions, the book does read a bit like a screenplay, cutting quickly from one scene to another. But the frequent shifts in the story's tempo succeed in making the novel all the more vivid, allowing simultaneous action and contemplation to deepen the story and its inhabitants. Price:
