1 RICE, LUANNE Cloud Nine
Bantam January 4, 2000 0-553-58099-X / 9780553580990 Paperback Very Good
Readers sympathetic to Rice's (Blue Moon) highly sentimental take on the et ernal power of love and family will enjoy this skillfully wrought tale of c ourage on the part of a single mother recovering from a brain tumor. Sarah Talbot, who has built a down-bedding mail-order business ("Cloud Nine") bas ed on the products of her father's farm in Maine, finds new joy in life's s imple pleasures, such as celebrating the 37th birthday she thought she'd ne ver see. Her delight proves infectious to others in her small upstate New Y ork community. They include Susan Burke, also known as Secret or Snow, a tr oubled teenager from a broken home who is still grieving over the accidenta l death of her brother; and Susan's father, pilot Will Burke, who is trying to cope with his failed marriage and his inability to save his son. In qui et, unassuming prose, Rice fashions a tightly paced story that is hard to p ut down, delicately constructing the blossoming relationship between Sarah and Will. At the same time, she effectively depicts the impact a loving per son can have on an adolescent simply longing for a real connection with a c aring adult. The Talbot family's island home, where Sarah's recalcitrant fa ther and her estranged teenage son live together in a complex relationship, is idealized as a healing environment for the Burkes.

The sacred bond of sisterhood is explored in painstaking detail in Rice's n ewest offering (after Summer Light), a warm and weepy drama set in the pica resque seaside town of Black Hall, Conn. Dana, a professional painter, had intended to w hisk her nieces back to France with her, but her plans are put on hold when she realizes that change may not be what's best for Quinn and Allie. Indee d, Quinn, a cigarette-smoking 12-year-old with a chip on her shoulder, is d ead set against leaving, particularly since she's determined to uncover the circumstances surrounding her parents' deaths. The mystery of Mike and Lil y's drowning and the state of their marriage before the accident weighs dow n the second half of the book, but the pace picks up when Dana's childhood acquaintance, oceanographer and Yale professor Sam Trevor, arrives to provi de Dana with a shoulder to lean on and to help Quinn find the answers she s eeks. While Quinn and Sam make plans to recover her parents' sailboat, Dana struggles to overcome her sister's death and to paint again. The affection between Dana and Sam is heartwarming and convincing.
