4 King, Laurie R. Justice Hall
Bantam February 4, 200 0-553-58111-2 / 9780553581119 Paperback Very Good+
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: Sherlock Holmes has been much used and even more often abused by the many writers who have adopted and adapted him for their own purposes. What a delight then to find an author able to make profound changes while hewing so closely to the spirit of the original. With great verve and imagination King has extended Sherlock's career, pairing him with the superb Mary Russell. In the Edgar winner's sixth novel to feature the sleuthing duo (The Beekeeper's Apprentice, etc.), Mary is a fully accepted equal to her husband and partner in detection. From the opening knock on their door by a wounded visitor to the satisfying denouement, King has again crafted a sterling story. Two characters from a previous adventure (O Jerusalem), Ali Hazr and his brother, Mahmoud, have problems that require an understanding of British aristocracy and the unraveling of the story behind a British soldier's execution. King employs the English manor house to good effect, including the changes wrought by WWI, and seamlessly incorporates as background the horrific wartime executions of numerous British soldiers for desertion or cowardice. Separately and jointly, Mary and Sherlock utilize familiar tools: research, disguises, trips to London and France and the connections and expertise of Mycroft Holmes to ferret out crimes committed and contemplated. Though some Baker Street Irregulars may humbly beg to differ, King comes close to matching the fine intelligence and wit that informed Doyle's original adventures, providing irresistible entertainment.

5 King, Laurie R. Keeping Watch
Bantam February 3, 200 0-553-38252-7 / 9780553382525 Paperback Fine
Versatile and prolific, King not only finds time for two successful mystery series but also manages to produce the occasional stand-alone gem. Fans wi ll discover that this gripping tale shares certain locations and characters with Folly (2001), but her hero and subject are unique to this novel. At i ts simplest, this is the story of a man who helps rescue women and/or child ren from dangerously abusive men. King's lengthy, brilliantly executed back story of Allen Carmichael's experiences in Vietnam, his disastrously unhapp y return home and his eventual discovery of his "calling" showcase some of her finest writing. Now in his early 50s, Allen is ready to retire from his dangerous vocation, to settle on his remote island and perhaps serve as a consultant to those who continue the struggle. But his last rescue, that of a 12-year-old boy trapped in a horrible situation, continues to haunt him. And when reports reach him that loose ends from that case may be unravelin g, he's compelled to check it out since his actions may have endangered oth ers. King captures perfectly the contradictions of combat: the exhilaration and the horror, the isolation and the camaraderie. The niche Allen eventua lly finds, the one that allows him to function more or less successfully, o ffers almost the same mix of extreme emotions. This novel of harrowing susp ense and wrenching resolution should earn King plenty of accolades.

6 King, Laurie R. O Jerusalem
Bantam June 6, 2000 0-553-58105-8 / 9780553581058 Paperback Very Good
Although O Jerusalem is Laurie King's fifth book in her Holmes-Russell seri es, it actually takes us back to the era of her first book, The Beekeeper's Apprentice. Perhaps King was afraid that her characters, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, were becoming too cozy as an old married couple, and she w anted to recreate the edgy sexual tension of their first encounter. It's 1918. Nineteen-year-old Mary and her fiftysomething mentor are forced to flee England to escape a deadly adversary. Sherlock's well-connected brother Mycroft sends them to Palestine to do some international sleuthing. Here, a series of murders threatens the fragile peace.

7 King, Laurie R. The Art of Detection
Bantam May 29, 2007 0-553-58833-8 / 9780553588330 Paperback Very Good
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: Bestseller King (The Game) meshes her two best-known series--contemporary police procedurals set in San Francisco featuring Kate Martinelli of the SFPD and the period stories of Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes--to create an intelligent, satisfying novel of suspense. Martinelli is investigating the death of Philip Gilbert, an obsessively avid Holmes collector (he's even transformed his San Francisco house into a replica of 221B Baker Street), when she discovers what could be the motive: a previously unpublished story from Arthur Conan Doyle, told from Holmes's point of view, a find that could be worth millions. The present-day narrative is interspersed with the purported Conan Doyle story, which resonates with the account of Martinelli's own domestic life. A fine, perceptive storyteller, King is particularly adroit at capturing the milieus in which her characters reside. Fans of both series will be well rewarded.

8 King, Laurie R. The Game
Bantam March 2, 2004 0-553-80194-5 / 9780553801941 Hardcover Very Good
The seventh Mary Russell adventure (after 2002's Justice Hall) may well be the best King has yet devised for her strong-willed heroine. It's 1924, and Kimball O'Hara, the "Kim" of the famous Rudyard Kipling novel, has disappe ared. Fearing some kind of geopolitical crisis in the making, Mycroft Holme s sends his brother and Mary to India to uncover what happened. En route, t hey encounter the insufferable Tom Goodheart-a wealthy young American who h as embraced Communism-traveling with his mother and sister to visit his mah araja friend, Jumalpandra ("Jimmy"), an impossibly rich and charming ruler of the (fictional) Indian state of Khanpur. With some local intelligence su pplied by Geoffrey Nesbit, an Englishman of the old school, and accompanied by Bindra, a resourceful orphan, the couple travel incognito as native mag icians (Mary, it goes without saying, learns Hindi on the voyage out). Ulti mately, their journey intersects with the paths of the Goodhearts and the m ysterious Jimmy. At times, travelogue and cultural history trump plot, but the sights, smells and ideas of India make interesting, evocative reading ( Mary's foray into the dangerous sport of pig-sticking is particularly fasci nating). If for some Mary Russell is too perfect a character to be as endur ingly compelling as Holmes, all readers will appreciate the grace and intel ligence of King's writing in this exotic masala of a book. 11 King, Laurie R. With Child
Bantam March 31, 1997 0-553-57458-2 / 9780553574586 Paperback Very Good
I can't think of any moments in recent mysteries that equal the sheer physi cal and emotional terror of Kate Martinelli's discovery--about halfway thro ugh this third book in Laurie R. King's excellent series, now available in paperback--that the 12-year-old girl she is looking after has disappeared. Kate, a just-out lesbian, is under fire for that and other reasons at the S an Francisco Police Department, and the missing girl is the daughter of the woman whom Kate's work partner has just married. Kate's relationship with her life partner, Lee, is in serious trouble, and she has strong feelings a bout wanting children of her own. The motel from which the girl has vanishe d is in the middle of a notorious serial killer's terrortory. As she does i n her equally smart and visceral series about Mary Russell and Sherlock Hol mes (The Beekeeper's Apprentice, A Monstrous Regiment of Women, A Letter of Mary), King balances all the elements perfectly, and keeps us involved eve ry inch of the way. Her other Martinelli books are A Grave Talent and To Pl ay the Fool.
