1 Kellerman, Jonathan A Cold Heart
B. B. 2003 0-345-46745-0 / 9780345467454 Paperback Very Good
One of the most intriguing and attractive elements of Jonathan Kellerman's novels concerning psychologist Alex Delaware is Kellerman's willingness to change --- dramatically --- the elements of his characters' lives. While Ke llerman's latest novel, A COLD HEART, begins somewhat violently, the myster y behind a series of murders occurring apparently at random is balanced nic ely by the interplay between Delaware, his gradually burgeoning relationshi p with Allison Gwynn and his resolution of his feelings toward Robin Castag na, his ex-lover. It's hard to overemphasize how important this is, or how masterfully Kellerman accomplishes it. Leave out the potentially explosive chemistry of the relationships and what would be left is an unrelentingly g rim novel about a mysterious serial killer; focus too much on the relations hips and one risks wandering involuntarily into ripped bodice territory. Ke llerman makes the story of one as interesting as the other and very neatly brings them together at the denouement.

2 Kellerman, Jonathan A Cold Heart (Alex Delaware)

In Cold Heart, the latest thriller from bestselling author Jonathan Kellerm an, Dr. Alex Delaware picks up on clues missed even by his closest friend, LAPD detective Milo Sturgis. Leave it to this canny shrink to figure out th at the only thing two otherwise unconnected murder victims have in common ( they're both artists making comebacks after early career burnouts) may hold the key to their deaths. Even for Alex, this unlikely link is a stretch, e specially since Baby Boy Lee was stabbed outside a nightclub and Julie Kipp er was bludgeoned in the bathroom of an art gallery. But when a concert pia nist dies on the eve of his greatest triumph, Alex is sure that the murders are not only the work of the same killer but also connected to the unsolve d slayings of a Boston ballerina and an L.A. rock singer.

5 Kellerman, Jonathan Compulsion
Ballantine Books August 26, 2008 0-345-46528-8 / 9780345465283 Paperback As New
A crisp clean softcover (as new). Bestseller Kellerman serves up all the elements his fans have come to love in the 22nd entry in his Alex Delaware series (Obsession, etc.), including an intriguing plot, likable regular characters supported by an interesting secondary cast, diabolical villains, witty dialogue and a sense of humanity and justice. Alex and his LAPD detective partner, Milo Sturgis, are investigating several murders that, at first, appear to have only one thing in common: the perpetrator's use of expensive black automobiles while committing his crimes. Kellerman sticks to his usual modus, the patient and sometimes painfully slow accumulation of detail, as Alex and Milo build their case. A subplot involves a missing child last seen selling magazine subscriptions in a tony neighborhood 16 years earlier. On the domestic front, Alex is again living with his girlfriend, Robin, with whom he has broken up several times over the course of the series. In the end, a nice twist reminds Robin and Alex to be more careful in the future about drawing assumptions in their private life before all the facts have come to light.

9 Kellerman, Jonathan Over the Edge
Signet March 1, 1988 0-451-15219-0 / 9780451152190 Paperback Very Good
The third novel to feature child psychologist Alex Delaware begins with a d esperate, garbled phone call from former patient Jamey Cadmus, genius of re cord and heir to a construction fortune. The next day, Jamey is accused of the Lavender Slashings, a series of grisly homosexual murders that have roc ked Los Angeles. The teenager's lawyer asks Alex to examine Jamey's recent history with the hope that a plea of diminished capacity will protect Jamey from a prison sentence. Though soon fired, Alex continues his investigatio n, motivated by the compassion and intelligence previously demonstrated in When the Bough Breaks and Blood Test. Tracing the rocky road of Jamey's emo tional development, Alex crisscrosses L.A., moving from Beverly Hills mansi ons to biker cabins, from the old Haight district to mountain canyons, with stops at the U.C.L.A. medical library, the high-security section of the L. A.P.D. jail and some exquisitely appointed legal offices. Aided by his frie nd, homicide detective Milo Sturgis, Alex ignores warnings to stay away fro m the case and begins to discern an ominous pattern in Jamey's family histo ry, connecting esoteric South American hallucinogens, a massively irrespons ible real-estate scam and the ageless human motivations of revenge and gree d. The first two Alex Delaware books were very good indeed. This one, more complexly plotted, more richly psychological and filled with convincing fin ancial and pharmacological details, is the best yet.

10 KELLERMAN, JONATHAN Private Eyes (Alex Delaware Novels (Paperback))
Bantam October 1, 1992 0-553-29950-6 / 9780553299502 Paperback Very Good
Kellerman devises a psychologically complex, highly satisfying plot in this latest mystery (after Time Bomb ) to feature child psychologist Alex Delaw are, although we wait too long for the best parts and although Delaware, hi s love life on hold, seems less emotionally present than in previous cases. Harvard-bound, 18-year-old heiress Melissa Dickinson, whom Delaware had su ccessfully treated for anxiety 10 years earlier, calls him with concerns ab out leaving her wealthy mother, an agoraphobe. Years before Melissa's birth , Gina Dickinson Ramp had been disfigured by acid thrown for never-revealed reasons by a former lover, now out of prison and back in town. Widowed for many years, recently remarried and making progress in her own intensive th erapy with a noted husband-and-wife team of behaviorial psychologists, Gina is still fragile. When she disappears, Melissa enlists Delaware's help and that of his friend, Milo Sturgis, on leave from the LAPD (for having slugg ed, on TV, a homophobic superior). Kellerman deftly handles the strings of his plot, keeping in question the plight of Gina and the identities of thos e wishing her ill, until final events make what came before seem inevitable . A brief reunion with his former lover Robin will leave readers hoping for a reconciliation in Delaware's next appearance.

12 Kellerman, Jonathan Survival of the Fittest: An Alex Delaware Novel
Bantam November 3, 199 0-553-57232-6 / 9780553572322 Paperback Very Good
Legendary L.A. psychologist-turned-novelist Kellerman raids real life when inventing the adventures of his psychologist sleuth, Dr. Alex Delaware, and some of the scariest parts of Survival of the Fittest are historical. Euge nicists lurk behind a murder spree Alex must solve, and he notes that the e ugenics movement involved one elite U.S. college professor who advocated ca stration of ethnically lesser men, a forced sterilization ordered by Suprem e Court Justice Holmes that Hitler used as a precedent to sterilize million s, and the pre-Holocaust coinage of the phrase "final solution."

13 KELLERMAN, JONATHAN The Murder Book
Ballantine Books April 1, 2003 0-345-41390-3 / 9780345413901 Paperback Very Good
Bestseller Kellerman's 16th Alex Delaware novel is a hoot of a whodunit, a classic puzzler to keep the most staid traditionalist gleefully scratching his or her head until the wee hours. It's also a noir of gothic proportions , a descent into a California hell, in which Delaware shares the spotlight with his longtime friend and colleague, Det. Milo Sturgis. When somebody se nds Alex a three-ring binder full of grisly police photographs of crime sce nes with "The Murder Book" in gold letters on the front cover, Milo is stun ned to discover a picture of the mutilated body of Janie Ingalls, a Hollywo od High sophomore, whose vicious murder he investigated 20 years before. Mi lo was just a rookie detective then, partnered with a hard-nosed veteran, P ierce Schwinn. The pair made some progress with the case, but were pulled o ff it and split up because Schwinn stepped on some big toes. Milo suspects the book has come from Schwinn, an invitation to take up the old case that has haunted them both for years. He and Alex begin to follow a trail that w ill lead them high up the social ladder and down among the dregs of society . It is a step-by-step, clue-by-clue process beloved of mystery fans, and K ellerman handles it masterfully. By the end there are an awful lot of chara cters to keep track of, and the biff-boom-bang finale seems too much, but n o one's perfect. This may be the best Kellerman in years.
