GRAFTON, SUE M Is for Malice Fawcett November 26, 19 0-449-22360-4 / 9780449223604 Paperback Very Good "Every investigation has a nature of its own, but there are certain shared characteristics," explains private eye Kinsey Millhone in her 13th alphabet ic outing. "Here's what you hope for: a chance remark from the former neigh bor on a skip-trace, a penciled notation on the corner of a document, an ex -spouse with a grudge, the number on an account, an item overlooked at the scene of a crime. Here's what you expect: the dead ends, bureaucratic bullh eadedness, the cul-de-sacs, trails that go nowhere or simply fade into thin air, denials, prevarications, the blank-eyed stares from all the hostile w itnesses. Here's what you know: that you've done it before and you have the toughness and determination to pull it off again. Here's what you want: ju stice. Here's what you'll settle for: something equivalent, the quid pro qu o." Grafton, Sue P Is for Peril (A Marian Wood Book) Putnam Adult June 4, 2001 0-399-14719-5 / 9780399147197 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good/Very Good A highly collectible first edition no markings throughout. When Dowan Purcell, a respected physician who operates a nursing home, disa ppears, his ex-wife hires Santa Teresa PI Kinsey Millhone to look into it. Fiona Purcell is still seething over Dow's affair and subsequent marriage t o Crystal, a former stripper, yet they're still friends, and she seems worr ied. But when his body is discovered, she's among the suspects. Both of Dow 's wives, at least one of his business partners, and perhaps even Crystal's teenage daughter had motives to kill. While in her most recent adventures (N Is for Noose, O Is for Outlaw) Kinsey has acquired new digs, an extended family, and a few more gray hairs, in this one (which takes place some time in the mid-'80s), she's 36, still living in the remodeled garage that was blown up in an earlier novel. Easier than a facelift, and while Sue Grafton is a solid enough writer to pull it off, dedicated Kinsey fans will miss the more complex and multidimensional character who aged so ruefully and interestingly in the '90s. This isn't Grafton's strongest case; it's hard to care about any of Purcell's women or his associates. More exciting is the secondary plot, which involves a handsome landlord who offers Kinsey the new office space she's been seeking and turns out to be a lot more trouble than she bargained for. Despite its somewhat plodding pace and the echo of a more evolved heroine that rings through its pages, Grafton's many fans will probably shoot P Is for Peril right to the top of the bestseller list. --Jane Adams Price:

Grafton, Sue S is for Silence Pan Books 2006 0-330-43888-3 / 9780330438889 Paperback Fine Kinsey Millhone has kept her appeal by being distinctive and sympathetic wi thout craving center stage. While some mysteries that provide the PI's shoe size or most despised food create a forced and intrusive intimacy, a maste r like Grafton makes the relationship relaxed and reassuring. Millhone's li fe is modest and familiar, though her love life, now featuring police detec tive Cheney Phillips, tends to be oddly remote. This 19th entry (after 2004 's R Is for Ricochet) adopts a new convention: Millhone's customary intelli gent and occasionally self-deprecating first-person reportage is interrupte d by vignettes from the days surrounding the Fourth of July, 34 years earli er, when a hot-blooded young woman named Violet Sullivan disappeared. Viole t's daughter, Daisy, who was seven at the time, hires Millhone to discover her mother's true fate. Violet had toyed with every man in town at one time or another, so there's no shortage of scandalous secrets and possible susp ects. Price:

Grafton, Sue T is for Trespass Berkley November 25, 20 0-425-22484-8 / 9780425224847 Paperback Very Good Starred Review. The 20th Kinsey Millhone crime novel (after 2005's S Is for Silence), a gripping, if depressing, tale of identify theft and elder abus e, displays bestseller Grafton's storytelling gifts. By default, Millhone, a private investigator in the small Southern California town of Santa Teres a, assumes responsibility for the well-being of an old neighbor, Gus Vronsk y, injured in a fall. After Vronsky's great-niece arranges to hire a home a ide, Solana Rojas, Millhone begins to suspect that Rojas is not all that sh e seems. Since the reader knows from the start that an unscrupulous master manipulator has stolen the Rojas persona, the plot focuses not on whodunit but on the battle of wits Millhone wages with an unconventional and formida ble adversary. Grafton's mastery of dialogue and her portrayal of the limit s of good intentions make this one of the series' high points, even if two violent scenes near the end tidy up the pieces a little too neatly.
