Fforde, Jasper Big Over Easy, The Hodder 2005 0-340-83568-0 / 9780340835685 Paperback Very Good+ The word of mouth on Jasper Fforde has long been enthusiastic, among those in the know. But now that his readership has expanded immeasurably, the exp ectations for such books as The Big Over Easy are considerable. And whether or not those expectations will be met by this new book depends on the read iness of readers to strike out in new directions--just as the author has do ne. Fforde's speciality has long been the outrageous teasing of narrative f orms, and there's a measure of that here, although more disciplined than in earlier books. Rather in the fashion in which Stephen Sondheim exploded the world of fairytale in Into the Woods, Fforde here brings all the apparatus of the tough crime thriller to bear on the nursery rhyme. Minor baronet Humpty Stuyvesant Van Dumpty III has been found dead--and in pieces--beneath a wall in a less salubrious area of town. The perpetrator would appear to be his ex-wife, but she has shot herself. Detective Inspector Jack Spratt and his colleague Mary Mary are assigned to the case, and soon find themselves knee-deep in money-laundering, bullion smuggling and major problems with beanstalks. Fforde, Jasper The Big Over Easy: A Nursery Crime Penguin July 25, 2006 0143037234 / 9780143037231 Paperback Very Good A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: Hearing characters debate the implications of "illegal straw-into-gold dens" is attractive to a certain type of reader. Puns and silliness can certainly provide laugh-out-loud fun, especially when cleverly handled. But critics found this new series debut from literary jokester Jasper Fforde (The Eyre Affair, **** Summer 2002, is from Fforde's first series, Thursday Next) a tad shallow and wearisome. Fforde doesn't skewer nursery rhymes exclusively; he also spoofs mystery fiction protocol, including anagrams, secret twins, and butlers who did it. This is actually his most ingenious turn in an otherwise overlong send-up. Price:

Fforde, Jasper The Fourth Bear: A Nursery Crime Penguin July 31, 2007 0-14-303892-3 / 9780143038924 Paperback Very Good A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: Still on leave from his wildly inventive Thursday Next series (Something Rotten, 2004), Fforde offers a second entry in his wildly inventive Nursery Crime series (The Big Over Easy, 2005). The sadistic and superpowerful Gingerbreadman, nemesis of Jack Spratt, has escaped from St. Cerebellum's secure hospital for the criminally insane. Unfortunately, Spratt has been suspended pending psychological evaluation for his role in the Red Riding Hood fiasco. Though at first he resists doing "a plot device number twenty-six" and hunting for the Gingerbreadman on his own, eventually Spratt has no choice but to follow the rules of detective convention. All he and his mismatched team have to do is find the links between exploding extreme-cucumber-growers, a missing reporter nicknamed Goldilocks, a theme park called SommeWorld, and, oh yes, porridge dealers.
