Lehane, Dennis A Drink Before the War HarperTorch July 1, 1996 0-380-72623-8 / 9780380726233 Paperback Near Fine A crisp clean softcover: In this first novel, set in Boston, violence swirls around narrator Patrick Kenzie and partner Angleo Gennaro. This intrepid investigative duo are hired by two state senators to locate a black cleaning woman who filched several sensitive "documents." They find her easily enough, but the items she took, which point to child prostitution and political corruption, cause gang warfare and murder. Lehane's minimal use of literary references helps establish character, as do his frequent allusions to child abuse and wife battering. Rough and tumble action for a high energy, likable pair. Price:

Lehane, Dennis Sacred HarperTorch June 1, 1998 0-380-72629-7 / 9780380726295 Paperback Near Fine Dennis Lehane won a Shamus Award for A Drink Before the War, his first book about working-class Boston detectives Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro. Hi s second in the series, Darkness, Take My Hand, got the kind of high octane reviews that careers are made of. Now Lehane not only survives the dreaded third-book curse, he beats it to death with a stick. Sacred is a dark and dangerous updating of Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep, as dying billionair e Trevor Stone hires Kenzie and Gennaro to find his daughter, Desiree. Patr ick's mentor, a wonderfully devious detective named Jay Becker, has already disappeared in St. Petersburg, Florida, while working the case, so the two head there to pick up a trail. Desiree, of course, is nothing like the swe et and simple beauty described by her father, and even Chandler would have been amazed by the plot twists that Lehane manages to keep coming. Price:

Lehane, Dennis Shutter Island HarperTorch April, 2004 0-380-73186-X / 9780380731862 Paperback Very Good Boston-area novelist Lehane has written a terrific suspense novel, an impre ssive follow-up to 2001's Mystic River. Shutter Island is off Massachusetts 's coast, an army facility turned hospital for the criminally insane. When a beautiful-and certifiably crazy-patient escapes, U.S. Marshal Teddy Danie ls and his partner, Chuck Aule, are called in to investigate. Embroiled in uncertainties and mystery, the two soon learn there's much more at stake th an simply finding one missing woman. Stechschulte gives a stirring performa nce. His portrayal of Daniels is convincing, and he reads the role with equ al parts poignancy and toughness. Stechschulte is particularly adept at rea ding dialogue. For example, one stormy night at the hospital, Teddy and Chu ck are playing cards with two of the hospital's workers. The quartet banter s, calling each other's bluffs and having a grand old time, yet tones of ra cism underlie the conversation. Stechschulte handles the dialogue well, dis tinguishing between each voice and varying the pace between rapid back-and- forth and thoughtful, drawn out remarks. Price:
