Smith's 14th book of poems, his first since 1985 ( The Roundhouse Voices: N ew and Selected Poems, is a deeply reflective, elegiac work full of the ple asurable music and seemingly effortless synaesthetic effects only an accomp lished poet can sustain. Haunted by the need "to know the unavoidable/ thin g, meeting its depth," Smith successfully fuses the events of a shared hist ory with the personal. In the title poem a present sense of mortality trigg ers memories of the Cuban missile crisis and of his mother; "azaleas beginn ing to explode/ that must have been planted in that year,/ the smudged hand now earth's." Memories drawn from childhood enliven many poems, and though ts of his children's future, when they "will wake alone/ one day" give "Lon eliness" great power. The collection ends with an evocation of the Fall, "G od's awful/gift of loneliness." This book is for adults in an uneasy world who care about "the helpless gifts/we give, our family face/ the darkness w ill rend." Smith is also the author of a collection of essays of poetry cri ticism, Local Assays on Contemporary American Poetry.
