1 Hart, Carolyn April Fool Dead
Avon 2003 0-380-80722-X / 9780380807222 Paperback Very Good+
In Hart's 13th winning outing (after 2000's Sugar Plum Dead) to feature Ann ie Darling, the owner of Death on Demand Bookstore, "the best mystery books tore east of Atlanta," has planned the signing to end all signings for a lo cal writer on their South Carolina island. But someone produces fake copies of publicity flyers for the signing and sets a cat among the pigeons to so lve some old crimes and settle some old scores. Annie and her charming husb and, Max, hasten to salvage the shop's event and Annie's reputation. Their efforts to resolve the mystery of the bogus flyers bring to light clues to several unsolved crimes. A high school teacher subsequently turns up dead. Was the murder committed to keep old secrets buried, or is a new onslaught of crime just beginning? A serpentine plot includes plenty of red herrings to lead the armchair sleuth firmly in the wrong direction. The descriptions of wildlife add to the sense of place, but neither advance the story nor i lluminate the characters. Established readers will relish the usual banter between the couple that evokes classic screwball comedy, though at times th e author can be overly formulaic. Max is always "sexy as hell." "Hell" and "damn" are about as strong as the language gets, by the way. If cats play o nly a minor role here, their presence on the jacket will help lure those co zy fans not already familiar with this consistently fine series.

2 Hart, Carolyn G. Letter from Home
Berkley Hardcover October 7, 2003 0-425-19179-6 / 9780425191798 1st Edition Hardcover Fine/Near Fine
A tight clean copy, not price clipped or ex-lib edition. Hart has created a fabulous two-in-one: an excellent mystery and the poignant memoirs of her heroine, Gretchen Grace Gilman. A letter received by the now elderly newshound extraordinaire returns her physically, mentally and emotionally to her past and to her hometown in northeastern Oklahoma. As the pages of the letter unfold, so does the story of Gretchen's summer of 1944. With every able-bodied male involved in the war effort, Gazette editor Walt Dennis agrees to give 13-year-old Gretchen a shot as a newspaper reporter. But the sleepy town is soon rocked by the murder of Faye Tatum, an artist and the mom of Gretchen's friend and neighbor Barb. To make matters worse, the prime suspect is Barb's dad, Clyde, home on leave but nowhere to be found after the murder. Political ambitions spur the county attorney and the sheriff to track down Clyde and arrest him, while less hasty Chief Fraser is more interested in first sorting through all the facts. The obviously well-researched history draws the reader into this atypical whodunit. Characters are Steinbeck vivid, as is the sense of time and place. Hart masterfully portrays an American small town during WWII.

This ninth in the Death on Demand series (after Mint Julep Murder, 1995) fi nds mystery-bookstore owner Annie Darling in top form: polite, considerate, cheerful and relentlessly investigative. Retired Brigadier General Charlto n "Bud" Hatch is a newcomer to the tiny resort community of Broward's Rock, S.C., where his arrogance, power and extreme right-wing views have quickly antagonized many of the genteel yet clannish residents. When Hatch is shot to death at the island's annual Fourth of July festival, Annie and her rel axed but shrewd husband, Max, utilize their connections and gentle diplomac y to interview some of the many idiosyncratic natives who loathed the gener al.
