1 Cabot, Meg All-American Girl
HarperTeen March 25, 2008 0-06-147989-6 / 9780061479892 Paperback Very Good
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: Cabot (The Princess Diaries) presents another teen-pleasing novel and another likable heroine in this story set in Washington, D.C. Feisty, red-haired Samantha, a self-described "urban rebel" who has dyed all of her clothes black, is a 15-year-old middle child, uncomfortably wedged between her popular, cheerleader older sister, Lucy, and her brainy 11-year-old sister, Rebecca. And she has a major crush on Jack, Lucy's nonconformistartist boyfriend, whom she feels is far better suited to her than to her rather vacuous sister. The entertainingly opinionated narrator's wry top-10 lists add considerably to the tale's charm and speedy pacing, among them, the "top ten reasons why I can't stand my sister Lucy" and the "top ten signs that Jack loves me and not my sister Lucy and just hasn't realized it yet." Sam's life suddenly changes dramatically when, while standing on the sidewalk one afternoon, she foils an attempt to assassinate the President. She becomes a national hero overnight, is named teen ambassador to the United Nations and eventually lands the president's son as her beau. Despite these rather unlikely plot twists (in a comic coincidence, the president's son also happens to be a fellow student in her art class whom she finds attractive), Sam's spunky and intermittently affecting narrative, as well as the true-to-life voices of the supporting cast of characters, make this a convincing and diverting tale. As Sam learns important truths about herself, Cabot interjects a worthy message into her comedic caper. Ages 12-up.

2 Cabot, Meg Every Boy's Got One
Pan Books 2005 0-330-43613-9 / 9780330436137 Paperback Very Good+
A day-by-day travel journal intended as a first anniversary present for Jan e Harris's best friend, Holly, turns into Jane's rollicking private diary a ccount of the madcap events leading up to Holly and Mark's Italian countrys ide elopement. Cabot (Boy Meets Girl), who pens the bestselling young adult series the Princess Diaries, presents an engaging topsy-turvy tale pitting maid of honor Jane, renowned for her Garfield-like Wonder Cat cartoons, ag ainst Mark's best friend and best man, international journalist Cal Langdon (who, to Jane's astonishment, has never heard of Wonder Cat). The author g arners extra points for cleverly bringing the novel to life via Jane's diar y, Cal's PDA journal and the hilarious e-mails that whiz through cyberspace between the main characters, their respective family members and one dieha rd Wonder Cat fan. Cabot captures the rustic charm of Castelfidardo, a smal l Italian town in the region of Le Marche, which happens to be the accordio n-making capital of the world and is replete with unpredictable electricity , dubious public restrooms and bureaucratic snafus that nearly derail the w edding plans. The jaded, bitterly divorced Cal makes a worthy opponent to J ane, whose notions of marriage are much more romantic than his. Cabot's per sonal epilogue about her own elopement in the Italian countryside--marked b y much of the mayhem her main characters encounter--adds spice to this frot hy concoction of love, friendship and true romance.
