Sterling, Bruce Distraction Gollancz July 1, 1999 1-85798-831-0 / 9781857988314 Paperback Near Fine Politics is the art of the possible, the "doable", as Sterling's skewed her o, Oscar Valparaiso, keeps calling his wild improvised plans as if saying t he word made them so. Oscar's usually successful schemes are as cobbled tog ether as his own genetics--Oscar is not quite human. Investigating a geneti c research facility for a Senate committee, he finds a potential power base , and an enemy worth his attention--the Governor of Louisiana has taken to conquering federal facilities using gangs of the homeless as his deniable m ercenaries, and his interest in biotech makes the genetically anomalous Osc ar, and the scientist he has fallen for, attractive acquisitions. Having a senator he has just help get elected go stark mad, and finding himself on t he Net-wide hit list of every nut with a grudge, are the sort of things wit h which Oscar copes all the time--love and other altered states of consciou sness are a bit more of a problem. Endless witty extrapolations of social a nd scientific paradoxes and a constant cheeky elaboration of already convol uted plot lines give this the brio of Sterling's best short fiction--if the re is a more entertaining near-future SF novel this year, we will be in luc k. STERLING, BRUCE Zeitgeist Spectra October 31, 200 0-553-10493-4 / 9780553104936 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good/Very Good Rife with profound ruminations on the "master narrative" of life, Sterling' s newest evokes vestiges of his collaboration with William Gibson (1991's T he Difference Engine) as he journeys back to 1999 to detail the escapades o f Leggy Starlitz and his latest marketing triumphDthe G-7 girls. Using his international girl band to move products such as G-7 lip gloss, candies and sparkly pantyhose, Starlitz embarks on a glamorous Third World tour that s kids to an abrupt halt in Turkish Cyprus. Although the dialogue riffs along energetically while Starlitz and Turkish millionaire mobster Mehmet Ozbey discuss the future of G-7, politics and life's "deepest truths," fans of St erling's fast-paced thrillers will find little suspense or intrigue in this experimental piece. Starlitz passively steps aside, allowing Ozbey to use the band as a front for his illicit negotiations, and dutifully assumes the role of father when his lesbian ex-wife suddenly appears with his telekine tic daughter in tow. Abandoning Cyprus to conjure up his "Javanese Navajo" father (who dematerialized as a result of being too close to an atomic bomb test in the '50s), Starlitz travels to New Mexico and stages mock-Christma s festivities.
