2 Brown, Dan Digital Fortress
Corgi Books July 5, 2004 0-552-15169-6 / 9780552151696 Paperback Very Good+
In most thrillers, "hardware" consists of big guns, airplanes, military veh icles, and weapons that make things explode. Dan Brown has written a thrill er for those of us who like our hardware with disc drives and who rate our heroes by big brainpower rather than big firepower. It's an Internet user's spy novel where the good guys and bad guys struggle over secrets somewhat more intellectual than just where the secret formula is hidden--they have t o gain understanding of what the secret formula actually is. In this case, the secret formula is a new means of encryption, capable of c hanging the balance of international power. Part of the fun is that the boo k takes the reader along into an understanding of encryption technologies. You'll find yourself better understanding the political battles over such r eal-life technologies as the Clipper Chip and PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) sof tware even though the book looks at the issues through the eyes of fiction. Although there's enough globehopping in this book for James Bond, the real battleground is cyberspace, because that's where the "bomb" (or rather, the new encryption algorithm) will explode. Yes, there are a few flaws in the plot if you look too closely, but the cleverness and the sheer fun of it all more than make up for them. There are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and a lot of high, gee-whiz-level information about encryption, code breaking, and the role they play in international politics. Set aside the whole afternoon and evening for it and have finger food on hand for supper--you may want to read this one straight through.

4 Brown, Dan The Da Vinci Code
Anchor March 28, 2006 0-307-27767-4 / 9780307277671 Paperback Very Good
With The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown masterfully concocts an intelligent and l ucid thriller that marries the gusto of an international murder mystery wit h a collection of fascinating esoteria culled from 2,000 years of Western h istory. A murder in the silent after-hour halls of the Louvre museum reveals a sinister plot to uncover a secret that has been protected by a clandestine society since the days of Christ. The victim is a high-ranking agent of this ancient society who, in the moments before his death, manages to leave gruesome clues at the scene that only his granddaughter, noted cryptographer Sophie Neveu, and Robert Langdon, a famed symbologist, can untangle. The duo become both suspects and detectives searching for not only Neveu's grandfather's murderer but also the stunning secret of the ages he was charged to protect. Mere steps ahead of the authorities and the deadly competition, the mystery leads Neveu and Langdon on a breathless flight through France, England, and history itself. Brown (Angels and Demons) has created a page-turning thriller that also provides an amazing interpretation of Western history. Brown's hero and heroine embark on a lofty and intriguing exploration of some of Western culture's greatest mysteries--from the nature of the Mona Lisa's smile to the secret of the Holy Grail. Though some will quibble with the veracity of Brown's conjectures, therein lies the fun. The Da Vinci Code is an enthralling read that provides rich food for thought.

8 Brown, Dan The Lost Symbol
Doubleday Books September 15, 2 0-385-50422-5 / 9780385504225 1st Edition Hardcover Near Fine/Near Fine
A crisp clean first edition,(as stated) not an ex-lib, no markings througho ut: Let's start with the question every Dan Brown fan wants answered: Is The Lo st Symbol as good as The Da Vinci Code? Simply put, yes. Brown has mastered the art of blending nail-biting suspense with random arcana (from pop scie nce to religion), and The Lost Symbol is an enthralling mix. And what a daz zling accomplishment that is, considering that rabid fans and skeptics alik e are scrutinizing every word. The Lost Symbol begins with an ancient ritual, a shadowy enclave, and of co urse, a secret. Readers know they are in Dan Brown territory when, by the e nd of the first chapter, a secret within a secret is revealed. To tell too much would ruin the fun of reading this delicious thriller, so you will fin d no spoilers here. Suffice it to say that as with many series featuring a recurring character, there is a bit of a formula at work (one that fans wil l love). Again, brilliant Harvard professor Robert Langdon finds himself in a predicament that requires his vast knowledge of symbology and superior p roblem-solving skills to save the day. The setting, unlike other Robert Lan gdon novels, is stateside, and in Brown's hands Washington D.C. is as fasci nating as Paris or Vatican City (note to the D.C. tourism board: get your " Lost Symbol" tour in order). And, as with other Dan Brown books, the pace i s relentless, the revelations many, and there is an endless parade of intri guing factoids that will make you feel like you are spending the afternoon with Robert Langdon and the guys from Mythbusters. Nothing is as it seems in a Robert Langdon novel, and The Lost
