1 Bryson, Bill A Short History of Nearly Everything
Broadway May 6, 2003 0-7679-0817-1 / 9780767908177 1st Edition Hardcover F/NF
A highly collectible tight clean copy, protected in a new brodart wrapper, no inscriptions, unclipped dustjacket, this is not an Ex-Lib or a BCE/BOMC edition. From primordial nothingness to this very moment, A Short History of Nearly Everything reports what happened and how humans figured it out. To accomplish this daunting literary task, Bill Bryson uses hundreds of sources, from popular science books to interviews with luminaries in various fields. His aim is to help people like him, who rejected stale school textbooks and dry explanations, to appreciate how we have used science to understand the smallest particles and the unimaginably vast expanses of space. With his distinctive prose style and wit, Bryson succeeds admirably.

As his many British fans already know, bearded Yankee butterball Bill Bryso n specialises in going to countries we think we know well, only to return w ith travelogues that are surprisingly cynical and yet shockingly affectiona te. It's a unique style, possibly best suited to the world's weirder destin ations. It's helpful here: Bryson's latest subject is that oddest of contin ents, Australia.

5 Bryson, Bill Mother Tongue: The English Language
Penguin Books Ltd September 26, 1 0-14-014305-X / 9780140143058 Paperback Very Good
Who would have thought that a book about English would be so entertaining? Certainly not this grammar-allergic reviewer, but The Mother Tongue pulls i t off admirably. Bill Bryson--a zealot--is the right man for the job. Who e lse could rhapsodize about "the colorless murmur of the schwa" with a strai ght face? It is his unflagging enthusiasm, seeping from between every sente nce, that carries the book. Bryson displays an encyclopedic knowledge of his topic, and this inevitably encourages a light tone; the more you know about a subject, the more absur d it becomes. No jokes are necessary, the facts do well enough by themselve s, and Bryson supplies tens per page. As well as tossing off gems of fractu red English (from a Japanese eraser: "This product will self-destruct in Mo ther Earth."), Bryson frequently takes time to compare the idiosyncratic to ngue with other languages. Not only does this give a laugh (one word: Welsh ), and always shed considerable light, it also makes the reader feel fortun ate to speak English. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edit ion. From Publishers Weekly Bryson's blend of linguistic anecdotes and Anglo-Saxon cultural history pro ves entertaining but superficial. "While his historical review is thorough. . . he mostly reiterates conventional views about English's structural sup eriority," said PW. "He retells old tales with fresh verve . . . but become s sloppy when matters of rhetoric and grammar arise." Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
