Rain Fall (2002), Eisler's first book about Japanese-American Vietnam vet J ohn Rain, a hired assassin for government agencies in Tokyo and Washington, worked so well that the author wisely decided to keep all the elements int act in this captivating follow-up. Once again, the nightscape of Tokyo is p ainted in beautifully dark tones, scored to the live jazz of the clubs wher e Rain drinks from a menu of expensive single malt whiskeys. Once again, Ra in knows everything about the arts of killing and avoiding surveillance-fro m the sound a man's ribs make when he's crushed to death trying to lift too much weight to how to use a container of very hot tea to ruin a would-be p ursuer's day. Once again Rain has to decide whether any of the people he's working for-the shrewd Tatsu, a veteran agent of Japan's FBI who seems to b e dedicated to battling high-level corruption; various shady American CIA a gents-are to be trusted. And once again, Rain realizes how alone he really is, despite the promise of love and companionship from a couple of very int eresting women. "I had understood even as a child that to be half Japanese is to be half something else, and to be half something else is to be... chi gatte. Chigatte, meaning `different,' but equally meaning `wrong.' The lang uage, like the culture, makes no distinction." The plot itself is a complic ated one about a CIA scheme called Crepuscular, designed to clean up-or pos sibly further corrupt-Japan's tangled mess of business and politics.

Once again Rain is working with, or at least parallel to, Tatsu, a wily veteran of Japan's FBI equivalent, who aims to cleanse the Japanese government of its systemic corruption. To further this goal, he's persuaded the ever-cautious Rain to take out Murakami, a brutal gangster and hitman who specializes in making his killings look like suicide, a specialty Rain thought was his alone. Liquidating the dangerous and elusive Murakami proves to be a difficult task, however, one that leads to personal loss for Rain, and sets the plot on course for a climax that hits with the power of a well-delivered roundhouse kick.

But Rain's relatively simple life suddenly becomes very co mplicated when he finds himself involved both romantically and professional ly with the dead man's lovely daughter, Midori, a talented jazz pianist. Fo rmidable adversaries a nasty CIA agent from John's Vietnam days; a right-wi ng guru who uses Shinto priests as spies and yakuza gangsters as enforcers; a tireless old cop seem intent on exposing Rain and eliminating Midori. Th ere are several excellent action scenes, an amusing and touching young comp uter nerd who is Rain's only reliable ally and, most of all, an intriguing and intimate evocation of Japan's intense love-hate relationship with Ameri ca.

As always, there's a fly (or two) in the o intment, namely, a second assassin gunning for Rain's target and the target 's beautiful companion, who seems to have a program of her own. Can Rain na vigate the labyrinth of deception and double-dealing and carry out his miss ion? This is the third Rain novel, after Rain Fall (2002) and Hard Rain (20 03), and it nicely develops the character of John Rain, adding a few more l ayers of mystery and motivation.

For instance, his close friend and som etime partner, Dox, has been kidnapped. The abductor is Jim Hilger, a CIA a gent whose schemes have been foiled by Rain a few times in the past, and wh o is now looking to use Dox's life as leverage to force Rain to commit a se ries of assassinations. But Rain is nobody's fool: he knows he can't trust Hilger to live up to his end of the deal, and there's only one way to make sure Dox stays healthy. Readers may wonder how many stories there are to te ll about a hit man who wants to get out of the life, but so far Eisler hasn 't run out of believable scenarios. This one is as good as its five forerun ners, and here's hoping the author has a few more stories to tell.
