Smith, Barbara (Collaborator) I Could Do Anything, If I Only Knew What It Was Delacorte Press March 1, 1994 0-385-30788-8 / 9780385307888 Hardcover Very Good/Very Good "A life without direction is a life without passion," says motivational spe cialist, therapist, and career counselor Barbara Sher. In I Could Do Anythi ng If I Only Knew What It Was, a sort of broader, less dense, and less inti midating version of What Color Is Your Parachute?, she reveals how to "reca pture long lost goals, overcome the blocks that inhibit your success, decid e what you want to be, and live your dreams." This is a perfect book for new college graduates or anyone sick and tired o f languishing in a dead-end job or relationship--yet reluctant to make dras tic life changes due to uncertainty about what would actually inspire them. I Could Do Anything combines the I'm-not-buying your-excuses inspiration o f Dr. Laura Schlessinger with the soothing, analytic encouragement of Dr. M artin Seligman in his classic Learned Optimism. In other words, Sher will p ick you up off your butt and get you moving. She's included enough self-ana lytical exercises in here to save you hundreds of dollars in therapy. Whether you're looking to make improvements in your job or personal life, Sher will teach you how to determine what your goals are, and how to successfully reach them--even if right now the only thing you know is that you're vaguely to very unhappy and haven't the foggiest idea what to do with yourself. Smith, Barbara Burnett Writers Of The Purple Sage Worldwide Library 1996 0-373-26214-0 / 9780373262144 Paperback Very Good+ The second book this fall with a title punned from Zane Grey (see Joe R. La nsdale's Writer of the Purple Rage, reviewed above) is a neatly crafted deb ut set in the town of Purple Sage, Tex. Narrator Jolie Wyatt, a fledgling m ystery writer, has lived there for three years, drawn from Austin by her no w defunct marriage. A writers' group she has started is full of colorful wo men-and then full of suspects after a venerable judge is murdered with a pl oy taken from Jolie's novel-in-progress. Her novel and a recent altercation with the judge draw suspicion to Jolie, who sleuths to exculpate herself. Her investigations lead her to focus on a number of the writing group's mem bers, including a newspaper reporter with a secret; a woman whose father ki lled himself long ago after selling land to the judge; and another whose yo uthful indiscretion with marijuana put her in the deceased's courtroom. Whi le solving the murder, Jolie grows to understand her struggles with indepen dence, allowing her to decide whether to return to Austin. Despite the self -consciousness of novice Smith's writing about a novice writer, the story i s briskly told, the characters well rounded and Purple Sage promising as a rich setting for future tales from this talented newcomer.
