2 Parker, Barbara Suspicion of Deceit
Signet Book April 1, 1999 0-451-19549-3 / 9780451195494 Paperback Near Fine
Readers disappointed that Parker's last two mysteries did not feature attor neys Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana will be delighted to find the Miami t wosome at the center of this complex, involving tale. With publisher promot ion (including the simultaneous million-copy paperback release of Criminal Justice, 1997), Suspicion should also draw new readers. Parker (who earned Edgar-finalist status for her first effort, Suspicion of Innocence, 1994) u ses opera and Central America as effective counterpoints to the confrontati on between Cuban and Yankee culture--within Gail and Anthony's romance and within Miami society--which has animated the series. To build business for her new solo practice, Gail takes on the Miami Opera as a client, only to l earn of a pending crisis: the rising young bass-baritone scheduled to play Don Giovanni in Mozart's opera sang recently in Castro's Cuba. The singer m ay be in danger, as may several of Gail's opera contacts who have ties to p uzzling aspects of Anthony's past, ties that lead back to Nicaragua in the late 1970s. A satisfying read.

But Patrick Norris, Althea's nep hew and Gail's old law school buddy who had dropped out to do good, suspect s the will is a fake. If so, he, as Althea's only survivor, stands to gain all of the multimillion-dollar estate. Gail agrees to represent him, a deci sion which causes problems at her firm (where she's about to be made partne r), with her lover, Anthony Quintana, and in her home life as she struggles to reconcile principle with ambition and cope with the demands of raising her 10-year-old daughter. When the police determine that Althea was murdere d, Patrick becomes the prime suspect and Gail is soon searching for a forge r and killer. She discovers that many interests are being protected, some o f them by Miami's elite.
