By his Granddaughter, Antoinette Cheney Crocker. 214, [4] p., illus.; 26 cm.; Frank Woodbridge C heney (1832-1909) was twenty-eight years old in 1859 when Cheney Bros. sent him to buy raw silk in the Orient. His father, Charles, and [seven] uncles ... had started the silk business in Manchester, Connecticut in 1834...' Ch eney arrived in Japan only five years after Commodore Mathew Perry had ente red the country. During Cheney's stay in China, the Taiping Rebellion raged around him. This collection of long, lucid letters with narrative connecti ve links describes Cheney's travels through the silk-manufacturing countrie s of Europe and onward through East Asia.
