Rule, Ann Heart Full of Lies: A True Story of Desire and Death Pocket September 28, 2 0-7434-1013-0 / 9780743410137 Paperback Near Fine Former Seattle police officer and crime author Rule (Small Sacrifices; Dead by Sunset, etc.) knows a good drama when she finds one: it involves love, betrayal, greed and violence. In the story of Liysa Northon, a woman who mu rdered her third husband, Chris Northon, in order to collect his insurance money, Rule has found a real-life soap opera. In the fall of 2000, Liysa co nvinced Chris to go on a camping trip with her and their small son in the r emote forests of Oregon. But the idyllic vacation didn't last long; Liysa w ould later admit to ending her husband's life by shooting him in the head i n an act of "self-defense." From where she sits today (in an Oregon state p rison), she still professes to have shot Chris only in innocence and fear-e motions she said were caused by her years as a victim of domestic violence. But according to her husband's parents and other sources, Liysa is a manip ulative sociopath who spent years crafting a public façade of abuse persuas ive enough to justify the cold-blooded murder of her husband. Rule has done an impressive amount of research to reconstruct the history of Liysa's cri me and the stories of the main people involved, interviewing dozens of poli ce officers, investigators and private citizens across the country. And if the author's prose is somewhat flat, the fascinating and perplexing drama s hould be more than enough to keep most readers turning pages. Price:

Rule, Ann Mortal Danger Pocket 2008 1-4165-4220-5 / 9781416542209 Paperback Very Good+ The author of The Stranger Beside Me brings her brilliantly informed unders tanding of the sociopath to this riveting truecrime collection. Only Ann Ru le, who unknowingly worked alongside the smart and charming Ted Bundy -- Am erica's most notorious serial killer -- could lend her razor-sharp insight into these cases of the spouse, lover, family member, or helpful stranger w ho is totally trusted but whose lethally violent nature, though masterfully disguised, can and will kill. Featured here is the case of a Southern Cali fornia family man who appeared to be the picture of healthy living with his expertise in naturopathic healing. Luring a beautiful flight attendant int o a passionate affair, he swept her away to a secluded home on the Oregon c oast where his jealous rages escalated, ultimately leading to a brutal sex attack in which she believed she would die. How this brave victim survived, never knowing her tormentor's whereabouts, and how he resurfaced, forcing a tragic end for all involved, makes this one of Ann Rule's most compelling narratives. Other cases include that of the woman who masterminded her hus band's murder to gain his inheritance...the monstrous sadist whose prison r elease damaged a presidential candidate's campaign and ended in a bitter do uble tragedy in a quiet neighborhood three thousand miles away...the shocki ng DNA link between a cold-blooded crime and a cold case...and inside the h orrific case of the man who crossed an ocean and several countries to stalk the Eurasian beauty who had fled from him in desperation. Rule, Ann No Regrets: Ann Rule's Crime Files: Volume 11 (Ann Rule's Crime Files) Pocket Star October 31, 200 0-7434-4875-8 / 9780743448758 Paperback Very Good+ Starred Review. Prolific and talented true crime author Rule proves her war ranted reputation as one of the genre's leading lights with the 11th entry in her Crime Files series. Two-thirds of the book is devoted to one case, t he disappearance of an elderly sea captain from his quiet community of Lope z Island in Washington State. As with many of the stories recounted in prev ious volumes, Rule succeeds in pulling the reader into a mystery that was l argely of local concern. With a novelist's skill, she brings to life the mi ssing Norwegian mariner, Rolf Neslund, and his difficult marriage to Ruth M yers, who became the prime suspect after he vanished without a trace. Handi capped by the absence of a corpse, the local authorities, inexperienced in homicide inquiries, doggedly persisted over years until justice was won. Th e richness of this case does have the unintended effect of rendering the sh orter sketches that follow--including the tale of a woman beaten into a com a, a murder victim found months after the fact and a young bank robber--les s compelling, but few genre fans will complain; the Neslund case speaks for itself, as does Rule's skill as a storyteller. Book Description A ship's pilot legendary for guiding mammoth freighters through the narrows of Puget Sound, Rolf Neslund was a proud Norwegian, a ladies' man, and a beloved resident of Washington State's idyllic Lopez Island. Virtually indestructible even into his golden years, he made electrifying headlines more than once: after a ship he was helming crashed into the s Price:

Rule, Ann Smoke, Mirrors, and Murder: And Other True Cases Pocket 2007 1-4165-4160-8 / 9781416541608 Paperback Very Good Bestseller Rule looks at marriages gone bad in her latest volume of true-cr ime case files. Stories include "The Minister's Wife," about a woman convic ted of shooting her husband in 2006, and "The Painter's Wife," an amazing t ale of two strangers kidnapped by a hardened criminal. The bulk of the book is taken up by "The Deputy's Wife," the sad tale of a once-promising young police officer, Bill Jensen, who eventually took out a contract on his own family. It's a good yarn, full of horrifying twists, but at 150 pages can get repetitive. For those not used to it, Rule's fondness for potboiler pro se-"Their marriage had spun like a colorful top...Now as it wound down slow er and slower, Sue could see the pattern of lies"-can also annoy. Many of t he seven cases here are gruesome but unmemorable, perhaps the inevitable re sult of Rule's prodigious output. Price:
