Greeley (Lord of the Dance) has now written a superb "romantic mystery/fant asy" about a Nobel laureate who is astounded when a lissome guardian angel in couture garb comes to earth to protect him. Sean Desmond, a theoretical biologist, hasn't been luckyhis wife left him to go into "femtherapy" and t hen remarried. Professionally, Sean achieves glory by observing "sudden evo lutionary leaps" in fruit flies, resulting in a new breed of hardy "superfl ies." In New York, which he visits en route to claiming the Nobel in Stockh olm, gunmen nearly kill him before the angel Gabriella intervenes, posing a s Sean's assistant. Greeley explains, somewhat ambiguously, that the assail ants want to produce supermen and see Sean as an obstacle. Among his other foes are members of Project Archangel, a private English company trying to accelerate evolution for sinister purposes.

5 Greeley, Andrew M. Happy Are Those Who Thirst for Justice
Warner Books July 1, 1988 0-446-34946-1 / 9780446349468 Paperback Very Good
Greeley (The Cardinal Sins does his best work yet in this multigenerational mystery with real puzzles and strong characters. Chicago matriarch and rea l-estate tycoon Violet Harrington Enright has dominated and largely ruined the lives of her daughter and three sons. Only her granddaughter (and heir) Fionna has the gumption to fight back. Monsignor John "Blackie" Ryan, brother to Fionna's psyc hiatrist, is convinced Fionna is innocent, and he sets out to probe the tan gled relationships of Violet's unhappy family and retainers. One of Violet' s sons is murdered, Ryan's sister is endangered, there may be Mob involveme ntor worsebut Blackie Ryan winds it all up most satisfactorily. Greeley's g reatest gift is an apparent willingness to offend everyone. His church-scol ding and Irish-bashingIrish matriarchs especially are honed to a fine, affe ctionate pitch. If there is a "Lady Wisdom" (Ryan's term for God), she's la ughing.
