Just when you thought it was safe to go back into interstellar space ...Alastair Reynolds burst onto the SF scene with the Arthur C. Clarke Award-shortlisted REVELATION SPACE, British Science Fiction Award-winning CHASM CITY, and REDEMPTION ARK. Now experience the phenomenal imagination and breathtaking vision of 'The most exciting space opera writer working today' (Locus) in these two tales of high adventure set in the same universe as his novels. The title story, 'Diamond Dogs', tells of a group of mercenaries trying to unravel the mystery of a particularly inhospitable alien tower on a distant world; 'Turquoise Days' is about Naqi, who has devoted her life to studying the alien Pattern Jugglers.

2 Reynolds, Alastair REDEMPTION ARK
Ace 2004 044101173X / 9780441011735 Paperback Very Good
With this complex, thoughtful sequel to his highly praised Revelation Space (2001), British author Reynolds confirms his place among the leaders of th e hard-science space-opera renaissance. Spreading from star to star, humani ty has split into different, competing factions. Late in the 26th century, the group-mind Conjoiners are defeating their main rivals, the Demarchists. Unfortunately, the Conjoiners' space exploration has attracted the notice of an ancient swarm of machines that calls itself the Inhibitors and that e xists to destroy all biological intelligence. The Conjoiners don't believe they can fight this new foe, so they intend to run away and let the Inhibit ors wipe out the other human tribes. One Conjoiner warrior, the centuries-o ld Clavain, rebels against this heartless tactic, but he must negotiate wit h a fragmented, distrustful mob of possible allies while pursued by his for mer cohorts. The novel forces readers to process an outrageous amount of in formation-but that's only fair, since the characters are challenged to do t he same. As they extend themselves outward, they also have a chance to gain more understanding of themselves as human beings and more ability to inter act meaningfully. It's rare to find a writer with sufficient nerve and stam ina to write novels that are big enough to justify using words like "revela tion" and "redemption." Reynolds pulls it off.
