5 Heinlein, Robert A. Menace from Earth
Penguin Group (USA) Incorpor June 1970 0-451-12742-0 / 9780451127426 Paperback Very Good
Reader Rob McQuay doesn't have a lot to do but read the lengthy discursive analyses of Heinlein as he was poised on the brink of best-sellerdom. These are mature stories published as the author was moving from some of the bes t juvenile sci-fi novels ever penned to his adult novels, such as Starship Troopers and Stranger in a Strange Land. With assurance McQuay reads the fe w characters casually delineated a teenaged girl on the moon, a doomed surv ivalist on Planet Earth. Much of what made Heinlein famous is audible here: contempt for government and convention, stark self-reliance, prescient sci entific vision.

7 Heinlein, Robert A. Requiem: New Collected Works by Robert A. Heinlein and Tributes to the Gran d Master
Tor Books February 1, 199 0-312-85168-5 / 9780312851682 1st Edition Hardcover NF/NF
A wonderful tight clean copy, protected in a new brodart wrapper, no inscri ptions, unclipped dustjacket, this is not an Ex-Lib or a BCE/BOMC edition. The New Collected Works portion of this memorial to Heinlein ( Stranger in a Strange Land ) is a delight. Best of these stories, essays and speeches are "Shooting Destination Moon ," an essay on the movie that follows the story on which the film was based, and the prescient Guest of Honor speeches from the World Science Fiction Conventions of 1941 and 1961. Heinlein's contributions, while not necessarily representing his best work, are always thought-provoking and never boring. In contrast, the tributes by such luminaries as Tom Clancy, L. Sprague and Catherine Crook de Camp, Arthur C. Clarke and Spider Robinson offer tedious variations on adulation. The sole exception is Larry Niven's story "The Return of William Proxmire," in which the senator blocks the space program with a time machine. He keeps Heinlein in the Navy and forestalls the body of writing that would influence many to pursue careers in space. Kondo is director of the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite observatory at Goddard Space Flight Center.

11 Heinlein, Robert A. The Star Beast
ACE 1954 Paperback Very Good
"The Star Beast is a tale about a horrendous beast from another star-system , smuggled back to the Earth of 200 years hence as a baby, now grown bigger than an earthly elephant, and so tough that bullets bounce off it, and it licks down poisons with relish, but which is nevertheless just about the mo st appealing and lovable creature of the kind ever delineated... "Heinlein never preaches directly and he never writes down... His underlying theme, I think, is that not only are all men children of God and therefore brothers, but all higher life-forms that men may encounter, someday, in the outer reaches of the galaxy...." --- Denver Post

13 Heinlein, Robert A. Variable Star
Tor Science Fiction 2007 0-7653-5168-4 / 9780765351685 Paperback As New
Like a good Ganymedean farmer in the sky, Robinson (Callahan's Key) plants both feet firmly in Heinlein territory with this mostly credible pastiche o f a Heinlein young adult novel circa 1955. Working from an unfinished outli ne and notes, Robinson tells the coming-of-age tale of Joel Johnston, who f lees a broken romance to the new colony planet Brasil Novo 85 light-years a way. Joel and his companions demonstrate the odd mixture of innocence and s exual experimentation that Heinlein employed, as Robinson captures the naïv e yet advanced tone of Heinlein's future history.
