1 Yehoshua, A. B. A Journey to the End of the Millennium - A Novel of the Middle Ages
Harvest Books June 15, 2000 0-15-601116-6 / 9780156011167 Paperback Near Fine
A Journey to the End of the Millennium. The year is 999 and the protagonist is Ben Attar, a North African Jewish merchant who has, for many years, bee n in profitable partnership with his nephew Abulafia and a Muslim trader na med Abu Lutfi. But when Abulafia marries a German Jew who disapproves of hi s uncle's two wives, the partnership is suddenly dissolved and Ben Attar fi nds himself out of business. Abulafia's repudiation of his uncle sets the stage for Ben Attar's journey into the heart of Europe at the turn of the millennium. Accompanied by a rabbi, both his wives, and Abu Lutfi, our hero sails to Paris, where he hopes to persuade his nephew's wife that his marriage to two women is both legally and morally permissible. Yehoshua's tale is more than just a travelog through the Europe of the 10th century; it is also a meditation on religion, law, and the differences between the European Sephardic tradition and that of the Middle Eastern Ashkenazic Jews--differences that echo the current social and ideological conflicts within Israel today.

2 Yehoshua, A. B. A Woman in Jerusalem
Mariner Books August 6, 2007 0-15-603194-9 / 9780156031943 Paperback Very Good
Starred Review. Israel's master novelist (Mr. Mani) tells a spellbinding ta le about a spellbinding woman whose luminous smile, swan's neck and Tatar e yes are so beguiling that even in death she can lead a man to fall in love with her. The woman is Yulia Ragayev, a Slavic immigrant to Israel who has been killed in a terrorist bombing and whose corpse lies unidentified in a morgue for a week. The man (who, like everyone in the novel except Yulia, r emains nameless) is the human resources manager at the commercial bakery wh ere Yulia worked as a cleaning woman. A muckraking article forces the baker y's owner to discover her identity and take action to restore her dignity. The owner orders the HR director to return Yulia's body to her son and moth er in her native land for burial--a journey that turns into an opportunity for moral redemption for him after a series of stunning reversals. Througho ut, Yulia remains a mystery: why did she come to, and cling to, Jerusalem w hen she wasn't Jewish? Questions of morality, dignity, identity, nationalit y and belonging are subtly explored in sometimes hallucinatory prose, fluen tly translated by Halkin. This short novel's layers reveal themselves only gradually and, once revealed, continue to compel and provoke.
