807 BLAKE, STERLING CHILLER
Bantam September 1, 19 0-553-56866-3 Paperback Very Good
A promising first novel about cryonics (the freezing of human bodies for po tential revival in the future), this science-based thriller set in contempo rary Southern California challenges the idea that death as we know it is fi nal. Alex Cowell and Susan Hagerty, respectively general manager and resear cher at the cryonics firm Immortality Inc., successfully revive a cryonical ly preserved dog with the use of transglycerols, which prevent individual c ell destruction during the freezing process. Their feat attracts the skepti cal attention of the media, arouses the hidebound prejudices of Hagerty's e mployers at the university hospital on whose faculty she sits, inflames the self-righteous anger of Orange County preacher Carl Montana and inspires a holy crusade by the mysterious George, an unlikely but believable combinat ion of religious nut, computer whiz and serial killer. Thanks to an unholly alliance between George and the Reverend Montana, sabotage and murder haun t Hagerty, Cowell and his girlfriend Kathryn Sheffield, until Immortality I nc.'s future--and their own--is on the line. Written in an expansive, easyg oing style that fleshes out each character but sometimes blunts the narrati ve drive, the novel has snappy dialogue, believable science and the require d plot twist that will prompt readers to exclaim, "Of course!" Blake does a good job of tying everything together, as well as putting forward the intr iguing proposition that people are just as afraid of those who have the pow er to give life as they are of those who take it away. 819 Blaylock, James The Paper Grail
Collins 1993 0-586-21217-5 Paperback Very Good
This supernatural thriller is enjoyable: a combination of Charles William's books War in Heaven and The Greater Trumps, but moved to a small town in N orthern California. Here the Holy Grail is actually an origami cup which, f olded to form different shapes, provides the owner with diverse powers. A q uiet group of ordinary people have been helping Michael Graham, its guardia n, to protect it. When Graham is about to die of old age, the Grail summons Howard Barton to visit his relatives and take over its guardianship. Of co urse, he has no idea that he has been summoned, nor even that the Grail exi sts, but neither factor stops Heloise Lamey and her greedy crew from using Howard to attempt to obtain the Grail for themselves. Blaylock ( The Last C oin ) redeems the familiarity of his plot with a gift for drawing character s who are eccentric in delightful and original ways, whichever side of the war they are on.

820 Blaylock, James P. All the Bells on Earth
Ace Books December 1997 0-441-00490-3 Paperback Very Good+
With acrobatic grace, Blaylock (Night Relics), winner of two World Fantasy Awards, once again walks the dividing line between fantasy and horror?this time, as he relates a deal-with-the-devil story set in suburban Southern Ca lifornia. Two decades ago, a clergyman masquerading as a satanic emissary d uped three businessmen from the small town of Orange into selling him their souls. As soon as one of them spontaneously combusts during the current Ch ristmas season, however, the others scurry to break the deal. It turns out that there exists a good luck charm that can save the soul of one, milliona ire malefactor Robert Argyle, but when that charm is accidentally delivered to Walt Stebbins, Argyle's unsuccessful rival in the mail-order business, a chain of misadventures begins in which Walt, his wife, her uncle and an u nlikely pair of clergymen all recognize the taint of the devilish deal in t heir daily lives. Blaylock's gentle satire on "capitalism gone rancid" is s upported by his authentic rendering of a small town where the economic real ity of having to pay the bills occupies much of people's time. While the au thor probes the dark side of small-town life, he ultimately celebrates the virtues of simple living, yielding the sort of homey moral one finds in a G arrison Keillor monologue.

821 Bledsoe, Jerry Bitter Blood: A True Story of Southern Family Pride, Madness, and Multiple Murder
Onyx Books May, 1997 0-451-40210-3 Paperback Fine
This book recreates a complex case that claimed nine lives, one of the more shocking crimes of recent years. The links in all the deaths were Susan Ly nch and her cousin Fritz Klenner, each from a prominent, upper-middle-class Southern family. The murders began with the shootings of Lynch's ex-mother -in-law and ex--sister-in-law in Kentucky, and continued with the slayings of her parents and grandmother in North Carolina. What connected the killin gs was the bitter divorce between Susie and her husband Tom, and the impend ing custody battle for their children, particularly since it became increas ingly clear that Susie regarded the boys as pawns in a power struggle. The deaths that she prepared for her two sons, and which inadvertently killed h er and Klenner as well, provide a dramatic climax to this account of famili es too blind to realize that well-bred folk can be dangerous.

833 Block, Lawrence A Walk Among the Tombstones
Avon November 1, 199 0-380-71375-6 Paperback Very Good
Despite their dark titles (the words Slaughterhouse and Boneyard figured in the previous two), Block's splendid, award-winning Matt Scudder novels are by no means unrelievedly bleak. His latest-as well as offering the customa ry skillful plotting, adroit pacing and sure sense of New York character-fe atures a wry humor all its own, along with a particularly ingratiating and convincing pair of computer hackers. The premise is grim, certainly: a pair of men who prey murderously on women progress to kidnapping the womenfolk of drug dealers and demanding huge ransoms. Former alcoholic PI Scudder-now going to more AA meetings than ever-reluctantly agrees to help one dealer, a Lebanese, after his wife is killed by the kidnappers. Slowly and methodi cally he discerns a pattern in the mayhem. With the help of his erstwhile p olice colleagues, his black Times Square sidekick TJ and his call-girl swee theart, Elaine, Scudder tightens the net on the culprits. When they seize t he daughter of a Russian dealer, he is ready for the showdown. Block isn't big on action, though when it comes it is swift, vivid and horribly convinc ing; his Scudder books are built on character, atmosphere, crackling dialog ue and a great deal of brooding-the taste for them is addictive. An equal o f Elmore Monard and Robert Parker, Block deserves similar acclaim.

This is far from the best of Lawrence Block's landmark Scudder series-too l ittle action or suspense, too much domestic bliss--so I'll just use its pub lication as an excuse to introduce newcomers to some past glories. The best of them all is still When the Sacred Ginmill Closes, definitely on my shor t list of the 100 Best Mysteries. But close behind are such other Scudder c lassics as A Long Line of Dead Men, A Dance at the Slaughterhouse, The Devi l Knows You're Dead, Eight Million Ways to Die, In the Midst of Death, A Ti cket to the Boneyard, and A Walk Among the Tombstones.

835 Block, Lawrence Hit List
HarperTorch February 1, 200 0-06-103099-6 Paperback Near Fine
Few mystery authors have a stable of protagonists as uniformly appealing as Lawrence Block's. Whether Block's taking the reader into PI Matthew Scudde r's world of dimly lit bars and basement AA meetings, quirky burglar Bernie Rhodenbarr's used bookstore, or the international hot-spot hangouts of Eva n Tanner, the spy who never sleeps, he always provides good company. John K eller, star of Block's 1998 story collection Hit Man, is a typical Block in vention: an unassuming, get-the-job-done-and-move-on New York contract kill er who collects stamps, does the morning crossword, eats Vietnamese takeout , and falls for the occasional woman.

HarperTorch February 1, 199 0-380-72541-X Paperback Near Fine
A man known only as Keller is thinking about Samuel Johnson's famous quote that "'patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel'... If you looked at it objectively, he had to admit, then he was probably a scoundrel himself. He didn't feel much like a scoundrel. He felt like your basic New York single guy, living alone, eating out or bringing home takeout, schlepping his was h to the Laundromat, doing the Times crossword with his morning coffee... T here were eight million stories in the naked city, most of them not very in teresting, and his was one of them. Except that every once in a while he go t a phone call from a man in White Plains. And packed a bag and caught a pl ane and killed somebody. Hard to argue the point. Man behaves like that, he 's a scoundrel. Case closed." But Lawrence Block is such a delightfully sub tle writer, one of the true masters of the mystery genre, that the case is far from closed.

841 Block, Lawrence The Devil Knows You're Dead
Avon Book October 1, 1994 0-380-72023-X Paperback Very Good
There's a new trend afoot in the series mystery. Mickey Spillane, Nero Wolf e, Sherlock Holmes, and their investigating cohorts seldom changed from boo k to book. Part of their appeal, in fact, was their consistency. Contempora ry series authors, however, such as Bill Pronzini, Robert P. Parker, Joseph Hansen, and Lawrence Block, have taken the series character a step further , allowing growth and change to occur to the hard-boiled hero just as they do to ordinary mortals. Block's recovering alcoholic Matt Scudder is a perf ect example. Once isolated by guilt, angst, and booze, Scudder was the quin tessential loner. Now, as his never-ending recovery continues, his world ha s begun to expand. He has a true friend in Mick Ballou, a sidekick in stree t urchin T. J., and a lover in former hooker Elaine. Hired by the brother o f a mentally handicapped vet accused of the murder of attorney Glenn Holtzm ann, Scudder finds that the victim was both less and more than he appeared to be.

848 Bloom, Harold Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human
Riverhead Hardcover October 26, 199 1-57322-120-1 1st Edition Hardcover Fine/Near Fine
A highly collectible first edition, protected in a new brodart wrapper "Personality, in our sense, is a Shakespearean invention, and is not only S hakespeare's greatest originality but also the authentic cause of his perpe tual pervasiveness." So Harold Bloom opines in his outrageously ambitious S hakespeare: The Invention of the Human. This is a titanic claim. But then t his is a titanic book, wrought by a latter-day critical colossus--and befor e Bloom is done with us, he has made us wonder whether his vision of Shakes peare's influence on the whole of our lives might not be simply the sober t ruth. Shakespeare is a feast of arguments and insights, written with engagi ng frankness and affecting immediacy. Bloom ranges through the Bard's plays in the probable order of their composition, relating play to play and char acter to character, maintaining all the while a shrewd grasp of Shakespeare 's own burgeoning sensibility. It is a long and fascinating itinerary, and one littered with thousands of sharp insights. Listen to Bloom on Romeo and Juliet: "The Nurse and Mercutio, both of them audience favorites, are nevertheless bad news, in different but complementary ways." On The Merchant of Venice: "To reduce him to contemporary theatrical terms, Shylock would be an Arthur Miller protagonist displaced into a Cole Porter musical, Willy Loman wandering about in Kiss Me Kate." On As You Like It: "Rosalind is unique in Shakespeare, perhaps indeed in Western drama, because it is so difficult to achieve a perspective upon her that she herself does not anticipate and share." Bloom even offers some belated vocational counseling to Falstaff,

A highly collectible first edition, tight clean copy, protected in a new br odart wrapper, no inscriptions, unclipped dustjacket, this is not an Ex-Lib or a BCE/BOMC edition. When a millionaire adventurer goes in search of the true Mount Sinai, he gets more than he bargained for. In The Gold of Exodus, award-winning journalist Howard Blum records a page-turning story of an adventure that makes history. While risking their necks by sneaking into the xenophobic Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, amateur archaeologists Williams and Cornuke become pawns in a game of international espionage that eventually leads them to the top of the most sacred mountain in the world, and into the hands of shotgun-wielding Bedouins. 860 Blumay, Carl DARK SIDE OF POWER: THE REAL ARMAND HAMMER
Simon & Schuster November 1, 199 0-671-70053-7 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good/Very Good
In this relentlessly grim portrait of Armand Hammer, his former public rela tions consultant Blumay and journalist and novelist Edwards characterize th e powerful international businessman as a skinflint, a womanizer, a liar, a browbeater of his staff and, above all, a man obsessed with money, power a nd fame. Ironically, Blumay in this book undoes his 25-year-long attempt to build an image of Hammer (1898-1990) as "caring, compassionate and wise." Unfortunately, the book lacks an organized overview and, although it procee ds chronologically, it is difficult to follow. Moreover, while Blumay offer s insider details, the book strains credibility. It lacks both footnotes an d bibliography, relies on deceased sources such as Hammer's brother Victor for damaging information and serves up numerous verbatim quotes from decade s-old conversations. Armand Hammer, Steve Weinberg's 1989 biography, remain s the standard.

861 Blume, Judy Summer Sisters
Dell May 4, 1999 0-440-22643-0 Paperback Very Good
Judy Blume first won legions of fans with such young adult classics as Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and Forever, in which she tackles the cult ural hot button of teenage sexuality. In Summer Sisters, her third novel fo r adults, the author again explores the ramifications of love--and lust--on two friends. Initially, the differences between Caitlin Somers and Victori a Leonard (or "Vix," as Caitlin christens her) draw them together: privileg ed Caitlin is wild and outspoken, beautiful but emotionally fragile, while working-class Vix is shy, reserved, and plain in comparison. After Caitlin selects Vix to accompany her to her father's home in Martha's Vineyard for the summer, the two become inextricably connected as "summer sisters."

Vintage November 8, 199 0-375-70677-1 Paperback Near Fine
Oprah Book Club® Selection, October 1998: On a violent, stormy winter night , a home birth goes disastrously wrong. The phone lines are down, the roads slick with ice. The midwife, unable to get her patient to a hospital, work s frantically to save both mother and child while her inexperienced assista nt and the woman's terrified husband look on. The mother dies but the baby is saved thanks to an emergency C-section. And then the nightmare begins: t he assistant suggests that maybe the woman wasn't really dead when the midw ife operated: Did she perform at least eight or nine cycles as my mother s aid, or four or five as Asa recalled? That is the sort of detail that was d isputable. But at some point within minutes of what my mother believed had been a stroke, after my mother concluded the cardiopulmonary resuscitation had failed to generate a pulse or a breath, she screamed for Asa and Anne t o find her the sharpest knife in the house. In Midwives, Chris Bohjalian c hronicles the events leading up to the trial of Sibyl Danforth, a respected midwife in the small Vermont town of Reddington, on charges of manslaughte r. It quickly becomes evident, however, that Sibyl is not the only one on t rial--the prosecuting attorney and the state's medical community are all an xious to use this tragedy as ammunition against midwifery in general; this particular midwife, after all, an ex-hippie who still evokes the best of th e flower-power generation, is something of an anachronism in 1981. Through it all, Sibyl, her husband, Rand, and their teenage daughter, Connie, attem pt to keep their family intact, but the stress of the trial--and Sibyl's gr

Warner Vision April 1, 1994 0-446-60026-1 Paperback Near Fine
Fans will no doubt lap up the latest techno-thriller from Bond and Patrick Larkin, the team responsible for Vortex and Red Phoenix . In late 1997, wor ld order has been destabilized by recession and extreme nationalism. The Fr ench foreign minister creates "EurCon," a European Confederation led by Fra nce and Germany that will rule Europe. EurCon's attempt to assimilate Easte rn Europe meets with resistance, particularly from Poland, and soon the U.S . and Britain are pulled into the struggle. The war and its build-up are re ported by various observers: the senior CIA field man in Moscow, the privat e advisor to the U.S. president, a French intelligence agent, a Hungarian p olice commander, a Russian intelligence man, a CIA economist (the lone woma n and hence the "like" interest) and officers of the American, German and P olish armed forces. The French are definitely the bad guys here, albeit dim ones who don't see the writing on the wall when the Americans wipe out the ir nuclear capability two-thirds through the book.

Stephen Coonts, author of the wa tershed military novel, Flight of the Intruder, offers this collection of 1 1 21st-century novellas for fans of contemporary and near-future military f iction. Technology is the binding element of Combat, and fans of Tom Clancy 's high-tech military espionage thrillers will find much to love, from ultr a-smart weapons to the technical infrastructure of the armed forces of the future. Don't expect hard core science fiction; the villains are of the mor e realistic variety: terrorists, rogue governments, and outlaw technology. Some of these stories are encumbered with a level of detail only the seriou s enthusiast will enjoy. (Dale Brown's "Leadership Material" has whole pass ages describing regs and paperwork that will bore all but the most ardent f ans of the genre.) Highlights include Harold W. Coyle's fast-paced "Cyberkn ights," the most likely candidate from this collection to become a big-budg et feature film.

891 Bond, Michael Monsieur Pamplemousse Rests His Case
Fawcett September 1, 19 0-449-22045-1 Paperback Very Good
If this seventh haute cuisine adventure by the author of the Paddington Bea r children's books strikes new readers as initially precious, it rapidly be comes deliciously funny. M. Pamplemousse, retired from the Surete, is repre senting Le Guide magazine in Vichy, where six celebrated American mystery w riters are recreating a gourmet feast supposedly once hosted by Alexandre D umas. The Inspector arrives at the dinner as instructed, costumed as D'Arta gnan and riding a horse--a wickedly unreliable horse. All too soon he finds himself thrown into a rural ditch, arrested and handcuffed, pursued on foo t over the fields, locked in a country brothel (and rescued by his dog Pomm es Frites), tucked in a hotel bed with a ravishing American gourmet-magazin e publisher (and desperately trying to conceal the fact from his suspicious spouse, who has popped in from Paris). At the same time he's coping with t wo fake murders and one genuine one. "Pas de probleme," exults Pamplemousse , perhaps too soon. A delectable souffle.

892 Bondeson, Jan The Great Pretenders: The True Stories behind Famous Historical Mysteries
W. W. Norton & Company February 2004 0-393-01969-1 1st Edition Hardcover Fine/Fine
A highly collectible first edition/printing, protected in a new brodart wra pper. In nineteenth-century Russia, many people believed that a certain Siberian hermit was really the late Tsar Alexander I. After the French Revolution, several men gained followings by claiming to be the surviving son of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. Bondeson, a British rheumatologist with an engaging sideline in the more sensational byways of history, sifts evidence with a keen understanding of the difficulty of establishing truth: "Kings and queens are mere mortals, but it is difficult to kill off a good story." DNA testing has felled a few hypotheses, but mysteries persist, in part, Bondeson believes, because they are bound up with larger questions of national identity. He also writes about the not-so-great pretenders: the long-lost relatives who show up just in time to contest the family fortune. These trials provided high drama in Victorian England, reaching a peak of silliness when one witness testified that Charles Dickens, between books, acted as a pimp for the eccentric Duke of Portland.

In this hilarious novel, Bonfig lioli takes us back in time to an ironical maritime romp--Master and Comman der by way of Monty Python. Inspired by a shotgun blast in the seat of his breeches, young Karli Van Cl eef quits his native Holland to seek his fortune. He arrives in early Victo rian London and soon he is turning a pretty profit. But Karli sees that tru e opportunity flowers in India's fields of opium poppies and the treaty por ts of the China coast. So he takes a berth in an opium clipper hell-bent fo r the Indies. It is a journey beset with perils. Karli is confronted by the mountainous s eas, high-piled plates of curry, and the ferocious penalties of the Article s of War. He survives the malice of the Boers, the hospitality of anthropop hagi, and the horrors of Lancashire cooking. En route he acquires some inte resting diseases, dangerous friends and enemies, a fortune, and a wife almo st as good as new. 899 Bono, Edward De The De Bono Code Book
Penguin Books Ltd August 30, 2001 0-14-028777-9 Paperback Near Fine
Language has been the biggest help to human progress. But, ironically, lang uage has also become the barrier to its own development. We are locked in t o words and concepts that are limited and out of date. These force us to se e the world in a very old-fashioned way. Like any self-organizing system, l anguage has become bogged down in its own equilibrium. The marvellous flexi bility of language for description does not enable us to hold complex conce pts in our minds. Such concepts exist only while we describe them. The purp ose of the two code systems put forward in this book is to allow us to desi gn, hold and use complicated new ideas. since new words would sound bizarre and grotesque, the new concepts are expressed in a number code. This is no different from remembering and using telephone numbers: some you know and others you look up. There are a wide range of codes in this book which help overcome the language barriers in anything from relationships to travel. A n important and powerful "pre-code" is also given. The codes presented here are just the beginning of the limitless range of the De Bono Code.
