Birkholz, Erik Pace Special Ops: Host and Network Security for Microsoft, UNIX, and Oracle [ILL USTRATED] Syngress 2003 1-931836-69-8 Paperback Near Fine A tight clean copy, no markings throughout: In the fast-paced, caffeine-powered, and sometimes reckless world of computer security, the security analogy of a "hard crunchy outside and soft chewy inside," a staple of the security community today, is uncannily apropos as we spend millions to protect and fortify the outside perimeter network and nary spend a dime to address internal threats. However, as convenient as it may be to leave internal systems free from controls, it's a disaster once someone "bites" through to that unprotected inside; consider, too, the potential damage (whether intentional or not) that could be generated by those employees or partners who have legitimate access to the center. Lackadaisical attention to the soft and chewy inside could compromise your security at any time. The authors of Special OPs: Host and Network Security for Microsoft, UNIX, and Oracle immerse you in this analogy of intranet security and "the soft chewy inside" so frequently neglected in today's security oration. In this book, you will find the critical pieces to securing your vital internal systems from attackers (both friend and foe) and a near complete picture to understanding your internal security risk. Birkinshaw, Julian Entrepreneurship in the Global Firm : Enterprise and Renewal (The Strategy Series) London ; Thousand Oaks, Cai SAGE Publications June 6, 2000 0-7619-5809-6 Paperback Near Fine Much current literature on globalization and competition focuses on the ext ernal environment in which firms operate. Julian Birkinshaw's book looks wi thin international firms at the dynamics that affect their growth and posit ion. Are local managers seizing power from the centre? Is `glocialization' the inevitable result of globalization? Based on fresh case evidence gathe red in Europe and North America, the findings in this book about multi-nati onal firms and managers make a significant contribution to some of the key debates on the transfer of knowledge in firms; the resource-based view; and the network forms of organization. The initiatives of local managers refle ct local knowledge, skills and resources and at the same time impact of the distribution of power in the wider organization. By taking as his perspect ive that of the subsidiary manager operating in a network, Julian Birkinsha w extends the implications of his findings to all managers in organizations and challenges those who still view organizations as hierarchies. Bishop, Elizabeth The Complete Poems, 1927-1979 Farrar, Straus and Giroux April 1, 1984 0-374-51817-3 Paperback Near Fine Elizabeth Bishop was vehement about her art--a perfectionist who didn't wan t to be seen as a "woman poet." In 1977, two years before her death she wro te, "art is art and to separate writings, paintings, musical compositions, etc., into two sexes is to emphasize values in them that are not art." She also deeply distrusted the dominant mode of modern poetry, one practiced wi th such detached passion by her friend Robert Lowell, the confessional. Bishop was unforgiving of fashion and limited ways of seeing and feeling, b ut cast an even more trenchant eye on her own work. One wishes this volume were thicker, though the perfections within mark the rightness of her appro ach. The poems are sublimely controlled, fraught with word play, fierce mor al vision (see her caustic ballad on Ezra Pound, "Visits to St. Elizabeths" ), and reticence. From the surreal sorrow of the early "Man-Moth" (leaping off from a typo she had come across for "mammoth"), about a lonely monster who rarely emerges from "the pale subways of cement he calls his home," to the beauty of her villanelle "One Art" (with its repeated "the art of losin g isn't hard to master"), the poet wittily explores distance and desolation , separation and sorrow. The New York Times Book Review, David Bromwich Like all great poets, she was less a maker of poems than a maker of feelings. Price:

Bissell, Sallie In The Forest Of Harm New York Bantam 2001 0-553-58270-4 Paperback Very Good What Sallie Bissell has done so well with in In the Forest of Harm might h ave easily turned into a Deliverance-meets-"Charlie's Angels" farce in the hands of a lesser writer. Indeed, while there are echoes of Dickey's Deli verance and strains of Sharyn McCrumb's She Walks These Hills --near poeti c phrasing, ringing depictions of a majestic Southern wilderness, crisp ch aracterizations, bow-taut suspense--Bissell's words are surely her own. Bissoondath, Neil A Casual Brutality Minerva 30 April 1989 0-7493-9004-2 Paperback Very Good+ Setting an ominous tone from the first page, Bissoondath ( Digging Up the M ountains ) develops this powerful novel with consummate skill. He creates a picture of a fictional Caribbean island on the verge of chaos, and of one man in exile from his heritage, caught between two alien worlds. Raj Ramsin gh is a 35-year-old physician who took his medical training in Canada, then returned to Casaquemada; now he is leaving the island for good. In oblique , beautifully nuanced flashbacks, we come to understand the circumstances t hat have tinged his life with "the darkening rubble of shattered dreams." U sing the Ramsingh family as a microcosm of the island culture, Bisoondath d epicts a society as rigidly ruled by caste as the India of Raj's ancestors. Successful businessmen and professionals, the Ramsinghs disdain blacks, an d other Indians who have not prospered. "We recognized a racial brotherhood , but we saw too in them a version of ourselves as we might have been, and this earned them our distrust and our contempt." Raj's ruthless cousin Sure in typifies the disintegration of values in a family that prides itself in its high character and good breeding. On Casaquemada moral corruption is oc curring at breakneck speed; the prosperity of the oil boom has succumbed to the politics of greed. The country is in shambles. For Raj, the free-float ing violence will take a tragic toll. Bissoondath's bleak, despairing pictu re of this world is particularized by indelibly vivid characters and minute ly observed detail. Writing in tightly controlled yet supple prose, conveyi ng the true island patois, he constructs his narrative in fragments that bu Price:

BLACK, ETHAN The Broken Hearts Club (Conrad Voort Novels New York, NY Ballantine Books February 29, 20 0-345-42603-7 Paperback Near Fine Anyone who has ever been dumped or treated badly in a relationship can symp athize with the members of the Broken Hearts Club, a group of patients of t he New York City psychologist Ian Bainbridge who meet weekly in the back ro om of a seedy steakhouse to share their pain and provide Dr. Bainbridge wit h material for a book. It's only after a couple of meetings in journalist E than Black's sly and sharply written debut thriller that our suspicions beg in to take shape. Why are all of the club members men? And why do the women who have wronged them suddenly start dying in violent, brutal ways? The NYPD's richest detective, Conrad Voort, 29-year-old heir to an historic family name and fortune, doesn't at first see how the murders are related. He's mired in a doomed relationship of his own, with TV news producer Cami lla Ryan, who happens to be one of Dr. Bainbridge's patients but definitely not a member of his Broken Hearts Club. Camilla also races kayaks for fun and exercise, so you know that some kind of water-based action scene featur ing a kayak is bound to occur. Black plays tricks and takes liberties (Voort resembles John Sandford's Lucas Davenport, another rich detective), but he has the sense to let readers arrive at conclusions at their own pace. It's only after the last page that most of them will find themselves thinking back to scenes of Club meetings and asking, "But why...?" and, "But who...?" Price:

Blackmore, Susan The Meme Machine New York Oxford University Press, USA May 16, 2000 0-19-286212-X Paperback Near Fine In The Selfish Gene, Richard Dawkins proposed the concept of the meme as a unit of culture, spread by imitation. Now Dawkins himself says of Susan Bla ckmore: Showing greater courage and intellectual chutzpah than I have ever aspired to, she deploys her memetic forces in a brave--do not think foolhardy until you have read it--assault on the deepest questions of all: What is a self? What am I? Where am I? ... Any theory deserves to be given its best shot, and that is what Susan Blackmore has given the theory of the meme. Blackmore is a parapsychologist who rejects the paranormal, a skeptical investigator of near-death experiences, and a practitioner of Zen. Her explanation of the science of the meme (memetics) is rigorously Darwinian. Because she is a careful thinker (though by no means dull or conventional), the reader ends up with a good idea of what memetics explains well and what it doesn't, and with many ideas about how it can be tested--the very hallmark of an excellent science book. Blackmore's discussion of the "memeplexes" of religion and of the self are sure to be controversial, but she is (as Dawkins says) enormously honest and brave to make a connection between scientific ideas and how one should live one's life. Blackmore, Susan The Meme Machine Oxford [England] ; New York Oxford University Press, USA 1999 0-19-850365-2 Hardcover Fine/Fine A crisp clean copy, no markings throughout: Over a decade ago, Richard Dawkins, who contributes a foreword to this book, coined the term "meme" for a unit of culture that is transmitted via imitation and naturally "selected" by popularity or longevity. Dawkins used memes to show that the theory known as Universal Darwinism, according to which "all life evolves by the differential survival of replicating entities," applies to more than just genes. Now, building on his ideas, psychologist Blackmore contends that memes can account for many forms of human behavior that do not obviously serve the "selfish gene." For example, a possible gene-meme co-evolution among early humans could have selected for true altruism among humans: people who help others (whether or not they are related) can influence them and thus spread their memes. Meme transmission would also explain some thorny problems in sociobiology. From a gene's point of view, celibacy, birth control and adoption are horrible mistakes. From a meme's point of view, they are a gold mine. Few or no children free up the meme-carrier to devote more energy to horizontal transmission to non-relatives (monks and nuns the world over figured that out long ago), something the gene is incapable of. With adoption, memes can even co-opt vertical transmission between generations. Blackmore posits that, in modern culture, meme replication has almost completely overwhelmed the glacially slow gene replication. Well written and personable, this provocative book makes a cogentAif not wholly persuasiveAcase for the concept of memes and for the importance of their effects on human culture. Price:

Blake, Michael The Holy Road: A Novel Random House Trade Paperback July 9, 2002 0-375-76040-7 Paperback Very Good+ Eleven years after winning an Academy Award for the film screenplay of his novel Dances with Wolves, Blake offers this dramatic sequel to his tale of army Lt. John Dunbar and his life with the Comanche Indians on the Great Pl ains. It is now 1874, 11 years after Dunbar deserted from the army to live among the Comanche. He has married Stands with a Fist, the captive white wo man raised by Indians, and they have three children. Dunbar has forsworn th e white man's ways and is accepted as Dances with Wolves, a full-fledged Co manche warrior. These are hard times for the Plains Indians, however, as th e advance of the white man results in war, misery and a gloomy future. When a party of white rangers attacks his village and kidnaps his wife and youn gest child, Dances with Wolves goes after them in a wild attempt at rescue. Alongside his tale of Dances with Wolves's personal turmoil, Blake more fo rcefully tells of the conflicts among the Indians regarding whether to figh t the white man or to make peace. Raids, ambushes, atrocities and bitternes s on both sides can have only one conclusion, despite an Indian peace deleg ation that goes to Washington, D.C., to meet the Great White Father. This n ovel focuses less on Dances with Wolves and much more on the confused pligh t of the Indians, who cannot understand the white man's greed, duplicity an d brutality. Familiar characters from the original novel reappear here in m ore important roles, making this a more powerful historical novel with a mu ch wider scope. Blake's ability to evoke sadness and joy, action and emotio n is as strong as ever, and the ending hits hard. Price:

BLAKE, STERLING CHILLER Bantam September 1, 19 0-553-56866-3 Paperback Very Good A promising first novel about cryonics (the freezing of human bodies for po tential revival in the future), this science-based thriller set in contempo rary Southern California challenges the idea that death as we know it is fi nal. Alex Cowell and Susan Hagerty, respectively general manager and resear cher at the cryonics firm Immortality Inc., successfully revive a cryonical ly preserved dog with the use of transglycerols, which prevent individual c ell destruction during the freezing process. Their feat attracts the skepti cal attention of the media, arouses the hidebound prejudices of Hagerty's e mployers at the university hospital on whose faculty she sits, inflames the self-righteous anger of Orange County preacher Carl Montana and inspires a holy crusade by the mysterious George, an unlikely but believable combinat ion of religious nut, computer whiz and serial killer. Thanks to an unholly alliance between George and the Reverend Montana, sabotage and murder haun t Hagerty, Cowell and his girlfriend Kathryn Sheffield, until Immortality I nc.'s future--and their own--is on the line. Written in an expansive, easyg oing style that fleshes out each character but sometimes blunts the narrati ve drive, the novel has snappy dialogue, believable science and the require d plot twist that will prompt readers to exclaim, "Of course!" Blake does a good job of tying everything together, as well as putting forward the intr iguing proposition that people are just as afraid of those who have the pow er to give life as they are of those who take it away. Blaylock, James The Paper Grail Collins 1993 0-586-21217-5 Paperback Very Good This supernatural thriller is enjoyable: a combination of Charles William's books War in Heaven and The Greater Trumps, but moved to a small town in N orthern California. Here the Holy Grail is actually an origami cup which, f olded to form different shapes, provides the owner with diverse powers. A q uiet group of ordinary people have been helping Michael Graham, its guardia n, to protect it. When Graham is about to die of old age, the Grail summons Howard Barton to visit his relatives and take over its guardianship. Of co urse, he has no idea that he has been summoned, nor even that the Grail exi sts, but neither factor stops Heloise Lamey and her greedy crew from using Howard to attempt to obtain the Grail for themselves. Blaylock ( The Last C oin ) redeems the familiarity of his plot with a gift for drawing character s who are eccentric in delightful and original ways, whichever side of the war they are on. Price:

Blaylock, James P. All the Bells on Earth Ace Books December 1997 0-441-00490-3 Paperback Very Good+ With acrobatic grace, Blaylock (Night Relics), winner of two World Fantasy Awards, once again walks the dividing line between fantasy and horror?this time, as he relates a deal-with-the-devil story set in suburban Southern Ca lifornia. Two decades ago, a clergyman masquerading as a satanic emissary d uped three businessmen from the small town of Orange into selling him their souls. As soon as one of them spontaneously combusts during the current Ch ristmas season, however, the others scurry to break the deal. It turns out that there exists a good luck charm that can save the soul of one, milliona ire malefactor Robert Argyle, but when that charm is accidentally delivered to Walt Stebbins, Argyle's unsuccessful rival in the mail-order business, a chain of misadventures begins in which Walt, his wife, her uncle and an u nlikely pair of clergymen all recognize the taint of the devilish deal in t heir daily lives. Blaylock's gentle satire on "capitalism gone rancid" is s upported by his authentic rendering of a small town where the economic real ity of having to pay the bills occupies much of people's time. While the au thor probes the dark side of small-town life, he ultimately celebrates the virtues of simple living, yielding the sort of homey moral one finds in a G arrison Keillor monologue. Price:

Bledsoe, Jerry Bitter Blood: A True Story of Southern Family Pride, Madness, and Multiple Murder Onyx Books May, 1997 0-451-40210-3 Paperback Fine This book recreates a complex case that claimed nine lives, one of the more shocking crimes of recent years. The links in all the deaths were Susan Ly nch and her cousin Fritz Klenner, each from a prominent, upper-middle-class Southern family. The murders began with the shootings of Lynch's ex-mother -in-law and ex--sister-in-law in Kentucky, and continued with the slayings of her parents and grandmother in North Carolina. What connected the killin gs was the bitter divorce between Susie and her husband Tom, and the impend ing custody battle for their children, particularly since it became increas ingly clear that Susie regarded the boys as pawns in a power struggle. The deaths that she prepared for her two sons, and which inadvertently killed h er and Klenner as well, provide a dramatic climax to this account of famili es too blind to realize that well-bred folk can be dangerous. Block, Lawrence Even the Wicked: A Matthew Scudder Novel Avon February 1, 199 0-380-72534-7 Paperback Very Good This is far from the best of Lawrence Block's landmark Scudder series-too l ittle action or suspense, too much domestic bliss--so I'll just use its pub lication as an excuse to introduce newcomers to some past glories. Block, Lawrence Hit Man HarperTorch February 1, 199 0-380-72541-X Paperback Near Fine A man known only as Keller is thinking about Samuel Johnson's famous quote that "'patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel'... If you looked at it objectively, he had to admit, then he was probably a scoundrel himself. He didn't feel much like a scoundrel. He felt like your basic New York single guy, living alone, eating out or bringing home takeout, schlepping his was h to the Laundromat, doing the Times crossword with his morning coffee... T here were eight million stories in the naked city, most of them not very in teresting, and his was one of them. Except that every once in a while he go t a phone call from a man in White Plains. Bloom, Harold Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human New York Riverhead Hardcover October 26, 199 1-57322-120-1 1st Edition Hardcover Fine/Near Fine A highly collectible first edition, protected in a new brodart wrapper "Personality, in our sense, is a Shakespearean invention, and is not only S hakespeare's greatest originality but also the authentic cause of his perpe tual pervasiveness." So Harold Bloom opines in his outrageously ambitious S hakespeare: The Invention of the Human. This is a titanic claim. But then t his is a titanic book, wrought by a latter-day critical colossus--and befor e Bloom is done with us, he has made us wonder whether his vision of Shakes peare's influence on the whole of our lives might not be simply the sober t ruth. Shakespeare is a feast of arguments and insights, written with engagi ng frankness and affecting immediacy. Bloom ranges through the Bard's plays in the probable order of their composition, relating play to play and char acter to character, maintaining all the while a shrewd grasp of Shakespeare 's own burgeoning sensibility. It is a long and fascinating itinerary, and one littered with thousands of sharp insights. Listen to Bloom on Romeo and Juliet: "The Nurse and Mercutio, both of them audience favorites, are nevertheless bad news, in different but complementary ways." On The Merchant of Venice: "To reduce him to contemporary theatrical terms, Shylock would be an Arthur Miller protagonist displaced into a Cole Porter musical, Willy Loman wandering about in Kiss Me Kate." On As You Like It: "Rosalind is unique in Shakespeare, perhaps indeed in Western drama, because it is so difficult to achieve a perspective upon her that she herself does not anticipate and share." Bloom even offers some belated vocational counseling to Falstaff, Price:

Blumay, Carl DARK SIDE OF POWER: THE REAL ARMAND HAMMER New York Simon & Schuster November 1, 199 0-671-70053-7 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good/Very Good In this relentlessly grim portrait of Armand Hammer, his former public rela tions consultant Blumay and journalist and novelist Edwards characterize th e powerful international businessman as a skinflint, a womanizer, a liar, a browbeater of his staff and, above all, a man obsessed with money, power a nd fame. Ironically, Blumay in this book undoes his 25-year-long attempt to build an image of Hammer (1898-1990) as "caring, compassionate and wise." Unfortunately, the book lacks an organized overview and, although it procee ds chronologically, it is difficult to follow. Moreover, while Blumay offer s insider details, the book strains credibility. It lacks both footnotes an d bibliography, relies on deceased sources such as Hammer's brother Victor for damaging information and serves up numerous verbatim quotes from decade s-old conversations. Bly, Robert Iron John: A Book About Men Reading, Mass. Perseus Books 1990 0-201-51720-5 Hardcover Very Good/Very Good Today's sensitized male may be in touch with his "feminine" side, but, writ es poet Bly, this "soft male" possesses little vitality and is hobbled by g rief and anguish. To achieve real masculinity, Bly argues, men must cultiva te a fierce tenderness to be found neither in the macho/John Wayne model no r in the "interior feminine." Taking as his starting point the Grimm fairy tale "Iron John," the author sets forth an eight-stage initiatory path whos e steps include remembering one's psychic wounds, communion with a mentor o r "inner King," becoming a lover, reviving one's inner warriors and receivi ng a "second heart." Bly avoids cant as he ransacks Jung, Freud and Reich; referents include Greek, Egyptian and Celtic myths, the Parsifal legend, Bl ake and Amerindian ritual. A wise and healing book full of fresh insights, Bly's odyssey will help men grapple with identity, fatherhood, relationship s and such crises as addiction and divorce. Price:
