Penguin Books Ltd 1969 0140006680 / 9780140006681 Paperback Very Good
D(avid) H(erbert) Lawrence was born on September 11, 1885. His father was a coal miner and Lawrence grew up in a mining town in England. He always hat ed the mines, however, and frequently used them in his writing to represent both darkness and industrialism, which he despised because he felt it was scarring the English countryside. Lawrence attended high school and college in Nottingham and, after graduation, became a school teacher in Croyden in 1908. Although his first two novels had been unsuccessful, he turned to wr iting full time when a serious illness forced him to stop teaching. Lawrenc e spent much of his adult life abroad in Europe, particularly Italy, where he wrote some of his most significant and most controversial novels, includ ing Sons and Lovers and Lady Chatterly's Lover. Lawrence and his wife, Frie da , who had left her first husband and her children to live with him, spen t several years touring Europe and also lived in New Mexico for a time. Law rence had been a frail child, and he suffered much of his life from tubercu losis. Eventually, he retired to a sanitorium in Nice, France. He died in F rance in 1930, at age 44. In his relatively short life, he produced more th an 50 volumes of short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel journals, and letters, in addition to the novels for which he is best known.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: THE COMPLETE WORKS, Shakespeare, William
78 Shakespeare, William WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: THE COMPLETE WORKS
Oxford University Press, USA 1986 0198129262 / 9780198129264 Hardcover Very Good+/Very Good+
A crisp clean hardcover, this book is 9.4 pounds, please enquire for extra shipping costs: This beautiful new edition of Shakespeare's complete works--"The Oxford Sha kespeare"--is the product of eight years of full-time research by a team of British and American scholars and represents the most thorough examination ever undertaken of the nature and authority of the early documents. The edition abounds in unique features. It is the first volume to provide e dited texts of King Lear both as Shakespeare originally wrote it and as it was revised for performance somes years later. Other plays, such as Hamlet, Othello, and Troilus and Cressida, are based on what recent research ident ifies as Shakespeare's revised text. Major textual alternatives--first vers ions of revised passages, omitted lines--are printed as additional passages . All stage directions have been reconsidered in light of original staging, and many new directions for essential action have been added. Specially de signed brackets idenify conjectural stage direction and speech prefixes. In most respects, the text is identical to that of the "old-spelling" edition , but spelling and punctuation have been freshly modernized. There is a Gen eral Introduction along with brief, factual introductions to each work. Elegantly (and Readably) designed, this book will undoubtedly become a treasure for lovers of Shakespeare throughout the English-speaking world.
