62 Parks, Adele LARGER THAN LIFE (OM)
Penguin Books Ltd 2002 0141008660 / 9780141008660 Paperback Very Good
Georgie is desperately in love with Hugh, and has been for years. She's alw ays tried to make him happy, and be the person he wants. Until she falls pr egnant and her life changes completely A very light read, I enjoyed the character's transition from bright young t hing to mother-to-be - fat, frumpy and thinking about reality. All the way through you could see how she wasn't being true to herself - taking a drast ic event like pregnancy to make her finally put herself (and child) first. Readers who have been pregnant would probably appreciate the descriptions of the turmoil of pregnancy. I would describe this book as "Chick Lit goes to Mothercare "

PREP, Sittenfeld, Curtis
69 Sittenfeld, Curtis PREP
Picador 2005 0330441639 / 9780330441636 Paperback Fine
The best thing about this novel, and there are many very good things, is it s strikingly intelligent voice. Sittenfeld nails the neurosis of adolescenc e with an unusual and appropriate tone....Sittenfeld's depiction of complex relationships is welcome; her characters are nuanced, pathetic, hilarious, and, above all, genuine. Prep is an extremely talented debut from a writer to keep an eye on for her sense of humor and empathy as well as her soci ological critique.

Louise Canova hails from Pittsburgh but is currently living in London with her actor husband. Louise has severe self-esteem problems, a budding eating disorder, a complete lack of interest in any activity, and a growing sense that something isn't right with her marriage. One day, while browsing in a used bookstore, she comes across a style manual entitled Elegance, penned by a doyenne of Parisian style and grace. Captivated by the advice in the book, Louise begins to dress better (no more Birkenstocks and shapeless dresses), work out regularly, and sleep less, and she seeks more attention and respect from her husband. Tessaro is a skillful writer, and in her capable hands this subject receives the respect it deserves, with dark undertones from Louise's past rearing up unexpectedly throughout the story. Readers will enjoy following this harrowing journey of self-discovery, renewal, and reinvention to its uplifting conclusion.

SWIMMING POOL SUNDAY, Wickham, Madeline
80 Wickham, Madeline SWIMMING POOL SUNDAY
Corgi 1997 0552996424 / 9780552996426 Paperback Very Good+
A fine chronicler of life's small and large catastrophes, Wickham (A Desira ble Residence, 1997, etc.) delivers a workmanlike tale of separated parents who are manipulated by an ambitious young lawyer. When divorce-bound Briti sh suburbanites Louise and Barnaby Kember, temporarily reunited at a neighb or's pool party, witness a diving accident that puts their youngest daughte r in the hospital, Louise's soigne new suitor, the attorney Cassian Brown, persuades them to sue. As it turns out, the politically and socially ambiti ous Cassian is more interested in winning a case that will bring him a conn ection to Louise's father, the famous Lord Page, than he is in Louise or he r child. A subplot about a brilliant young piano student and a somewhat old er man in the Kembers' village brings humor and a melancholy revelation at the end. If the novel drags in the middle, it's only because we can't help but wonder why it takes Louise so long to come to her senses and blast smar my Cassian out of her life.
