42 Andahazi, Federico THE ANATOMIST
Doubleday 1998 0385410115 / 9780385410113 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good/Very Good
A tight clean first edition/printing, protected in a new brodart wrapper, n ot price clipped/ex library or a book of the month edition. "O my America, my new-found-land!" Mateo Renaldo Colombo (or Columbus, to g ive him his English name) might have written in his De re anatomica. It is no accident that Federico Andahazi draws a parallel between his Renai ssance hero, the anatomist Mateo Colombo, and the explorer Christopher Colu mbus. It is the conceit of his first novel, The Anatomist (beautifully tran slated from the Spanish by Alberto Manguel), that both made "equally moment ous and disturbing" discoveries. Every schoolchild can tell you what Columb us's was; less well known, perhaps, is that of his countryman and fellow "e xplorer". "Mateo's America is less distant and infinitely smaller than Chri stopher's; in fact, it's not much larger than the head of a nail." In short , Mateo Renaldo Colombo discovered the Amor Veneris, the clitoris. Andahazi makes much of this discovery, not to mention its discoverer: "The discovery of Mateo Colombo's America was, all things considered, an epic counterpointed by an elegy. Mateo Colombo was as fierce and heartless as Christopher. Like Christopher (to use an appropriate metaphor) he was a brutal colonizer who claimed for himself all rights to the discovered land, the female body." Certainly women readers will view this description with at least as much irony as Native Americans regard that other "discovery" of a land they had known about all along.

Combining th e narrative structure of Robert Penn Warren's All the King's Men with thinl y disguised versions of headline news from the spring of 1992, Joe Klein cr eated a portrait of American politics that has become virtually indistingui shable from the real thing.

THE BRIDE STRIPPED BARE, Anonymous
53 Anonymous THE BRIDE STRIPPED BARE
Fourth Estate Limited 2003 0007170866 / 9780007170869 Paperback Very Good+
A series of diary entries charts the sinuous paths of marriage and sexual d esire in this artful book, a bestseller in the U.K. The author of the entri es, a nameless 30-something housewife, has disappeared, leaving behind what amounts to 138 "lessons," written in the second-person, for her fellow arc hetypal "good wives." At first, the gimmick is jarring, but as the protagon ist's personality emerges and flowers, readers will be seduced by this some times subtle, sometimes overwrought novel set in modern-day London. At firs t, marriage equals safety to the woman ("it's a relief, to be honest, this surrendering..."), but the sex is humdrum, and Cole, her husband, is remote and fastidious-only oral sex offers a surefire way to orgasm and sometimes he'd just rather watch TV. To make matters worse, he may have engaged in a n affair with her best childhood friend. Beginning work on her long-planned book might cheer her up-and so will an affair with lovely Gabriel, of the "cathedral-wide" chest and silky young skin. Thus she commences erotic adve ntures previously unimaginable. She also becomes pregnant, and the anonymou s author is cannily perceptive about the vicissitudes of pregnancy and new motherhood; she writes strikingly of the surprising erotic passion, emotion al upheaval and anger that can flare during pregnancy. This unusual but str angely compelling novel offers an intimate chronicle of change and self-dis covery, of a woman who makes a final and unexpected choice.

A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Taylor Antrim's debut novel is a darkly comic, clear-eyed look at hidden wo rlds whose complexities and rules can be understood only from inside: the i nsular hothouse of boarding school, the thorny dynamics between father and son, and the self-delusion of blind ideological commitment. Dyer Martin, a new history teacher at the prestigious Britton School, arriv es in the fall ready to close the door on the failures and disappointments of his past: a disastrous first job, a broken relationship, and acute uncer tainty about his future. James, a lonely senior, just wants to make it thro ugh his last year unscathed, avoiding both the brutal hazing of dorm life a nd the stern and unforgiving eye of his father, the school's politically ra dical headmaster, Edward Wolfe. Soon, however, both Dyer and James are inescapably drawn into Wolfe's hidde n agenda for Britton, as the headmaster orders Dyer to set up and run a Mod el UN Club for students. As the United States moves steadily toward a confl ict with an increasingly hostile North Korea -- whose pursuit of nuclear te chnology is pushing the world to the brink of nuclear Armageddon -- Wolfe's political fervor begins to consume him, and he sets in motion a plan that will jeopardize his job, his school, and even the life of his own son. With precisely controlled, deceptively subtle storytelling, The Headmaster Ritual is an insightful and captivating examination of the halting, complicated course young men must chart to shake off the influence of f
