DIFFICULTIES WITH GIRLS, Amis, Kingsley
184 Amis, Kingsley DIFFICULTIES WITH GIRLS
Penguin 1989 014010433X / 9780140104332 Paperback Very Good
Over 25 years ago, Kingsley Amis wrote TAKE A GIRL LIKE YOU, a comedy about a lusty young couple, Patrick and Jenny, each engaged with equal ardor in gaining an opposite goal -- he with getting her into bed, she with staying out of it. They both win. In DIFFICULTIES WITH GIRLS, Jenny and Patrick are back with us. They're old er, though not much wiser -- Jenny, devoted but aggrieved; Patrick, boozing and unfaithful. Each lives in a fantasyland projecting life through lenses not calibrated in this world. "To have said so much about the human condition with such wit and humor is an extraordinary achievement ...even for Kingsley Amis." (The Sunday Telegraph, London) -.

186 Amis, Martin NIGHT TRAIN
New York, NY, U.S.A.: Harmon 1998 0375702520 / 9780375702525 Paperback Good
I'VE SEEN THEM ALL: JUMPERS, STUMPERS, DUMPERS, DUNKERS, BLEEDERS, FLOATERS , POPPERS, BUSTERS...BUT OF ALL THE BODIES I HAVE EVER SEEN NONE HAS STAYED WITH ME, IN MY GUT LIKE THE BODY OF JENNIFER ROCKWELL...' So says Detectiv e Mike Hoolihan, an American policewoman, a police in cop parlance - a term which acknowledges that gender is not what a good cop is about. Mike begin s to investigate the suspicious death of Jennifer, a police colleague's dau ghter, a girl too blessed in looks and love and intelligence to want to exi t life. The evidence swings towards suicide - the gun in her hand, the suic ide note, the secret history of depression and drug addiction, and then swi ngs away-three shots to the head; could a suicide administer THREE, and why does the autopsy reveal no sign of drug abuse? As Mike probes further into Jennifer's life and death, she approaches the puzzle at the dark heart of the case: 'If not who, then why?' That unanswerable question resonates thro ughout this haunting short novel and even when Mike announces her investiga tion concluded and case closed, it lingers in her reader's mind.

187 Amis, Martin RACHEL PAPERS
Knopf Doubleday Publishing G. 1992 0679734589 / 9780679734581 Paperback Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. In his uproarious first novel Martin Amis, author of the bestselling London Fields, gave us one of the most noxiously believable - and curiously touching - adolescents ever to sniffle and lust his way through the pages of contemporary fiction. On the brink of twenty, Charles High-way preps desultorily for Oxford, cheerfully loathes his father, and meticulously plots the seduction of a girl named Rachel - a girl who sorely tests the mettle of his cynicism when he finds himself falling in love with her.

193 Andahazi, Federico THE ANATOMIST
Doubleday 1998 0385410115 / 9780385410113 First Hardcover Very Good/Very Good
A tight clean first edition/printing, protected in a new brodart wrapper, n ot price clipped/ex library or a book of the month edition. "O my America, my new-found-land!" Mateo Renaldo Colombo (or Columbus, to g ive him his English name) might have written in his De re anatomica. It is no accident that Federico Andahazi draws a parallel between his Renai ssance hero, the anatomist Mateo Colombo, and the explorer Christopher Colu mbus. It is the conceit of his first novel, The Anatomist (beautifully tran slated from the Spanish by Alberto Manguel), that both made "equally moment ous and disturbing" discoveries. Every schoolchild can tell you what Columb us's was; less well known, perhaps, is that of his countryman and fellow "e xplorer". "Mateo's America is less distant and infinitely smaller than Chri stopher's; in fact, it's not much larger than the head of a nail." In short , Mateo Renaldo Colombo discovered the Amor Veneris, the clitoris. Andahazi makes much of this discovery, not to mention its discoverer: "The discovery of Mateo Colombo's America was, all things considered, an epic counterpointed by an elegy. Mateo Colombo was as fierce and heartless as Christopher. Like Christopher (to use an appropriate metaphor) he was a brutal colonizer who claimed for himself all rights to the discovered land, the female body." Certainly women readers will view this description with at least as much irony as Native Americans regard that other "discovery" of a land they had known about all along.

194 Andel, Tjeerd H. van NEW VIEWS ON AN OLD PLANET
Cambridge University Press 2002 0521447550 / 9780521447553 Paperback Very Good
Earth Science is history, and because the earth is changing every day, eart h history is being added every moment. Professor van Andel's now famous boo k on earth history interweaves three main themes: the evolution of the soli d earth; the history of oceans and atmospheres; and the evolution of life. In the decade since this award-winning book was first published, much new i nformation has been learned and confirmed, and Dr. van Andel draws on this wealth of knowledge to thoroughly revise and update the text. There is a ne w chapter on how we can improve our grasp on geological time and, mindful o f the current interest in global change, new sections describe the greenhou se effect and address its possible future ramifications. In prose that is b oth concise and compelling and with a glossary and suggestions for further reading New Views on an Old Planet: A History of Global Change, makes earth history appealing to the general reader.

GETTING LUCKY, Andersen, Susan
198 Andersen, Susan GETTING LUCKY
Avon 2003 038081918X / 9780380819188 Paperback Near Fine
Marine Zach Taylor is stubborn, overbearing and paranoid. But he's also han dsome, which counts for a lot in Andersen's sexy romances (Head Over Heels, etc.). When he comes home on leave and meets curvaceous chef Lily Morriset te at his sister's place, he immediately assumes that she's after Glynnis's substantial trust fund. On the rare occasions he stops making her life mis erable on this account, it's only because he suspects Glynnis's new fiancee , David, of the same thing. Upon discovering that Glynnis has gone to visit David's family, Zach rushes off to save his sister with Lily in tow. After that snafu is untangled, a Colombian with a grudge against Zach kidnaps Li ly. Zach is surprisingly ineffective and unlikable right up to his 11th-hou r romantic capitulation, while Lily's sexual, culinary and financial sophis tication seems unusual for a woman who curses by saying "holy petunia" and "oh, poop." But perfect pacing, steamy sex and a fun cast of secondary char acters make up for what's missing in character consistency. From David's be latedly blossoming sister to Zach's charming Marine buddies, the story's su pporting cast adds human warmth and an extra dose of fantasy.
