INVENTING MARK TWAIN: THE LIVES OF SAMUEL LANGHORNE CLEMENS, Hoffman, Andrew J.
161 Hoffman, Andrew J. INVENTING MARK TWAIN: THE LIVES OF SAMUEL LANGHORNE CLEMENS
William Morrow 1997 068812769X / 9780688127695 Hardcover Near Fine/Near Fine
In excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlig hting. The spine remains undamaged. In this latest biography of the writer Samuel Clemens, Inventing Mark Twain , Andrew Hoffman plumbs unique territory: the relationship between Clemens and his nom de plume and alter ego, Mark Twain. Twain was, in his writing a nd in his public appearances, affable, witty, satirical, and good-humored. Samuel Clemens, on the other hand, was moody, insecure, frequently depresse d, and often riddled with anxiety. Although both personas belonged to one m an, it became increasingly difficult for Clemens to assume his Twain charac ter. Hoffman's engrossing exploration of Clemens's psyche reveals why. Inventing Mark Twain describes a childhood shadowed by Clemens's father's business failures and the deaths of that father and two siblings before young Samuel reached the age of 12. As an adult, the writer was dogged by financial and personal problems--investments in failed ventures, the deaths of three children, and the loss of his beloved wife, Livy. In view of all these tragedies, it's a wonder Clemens could write as Mark Twain, let alone assume that persona. Hoffman carefully considers all these issues and comes up with the portrait of a complicated man--one who could vote for a pro-slavery presidential candidate in 1860, then create a deeply affecting friendship between Jim and Huck--the escaped slave and the young white boy who ride the river together in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

THE END OF TIME, Horowitz, David
165 Horowitz, David THE END OF TIME
Encounter Books 2005 1594030804 / 9781594030802 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good/Very Good
Three days after terrorists slammed airliners into the World Trade Center a nd the Pentagon, David Horowitz, as disoriented as the rest of us by these cataclysmic events, discovered that he had prostate cancer. As America decl ared war on terror, Horowitz began treatment, emerging months later with a "reprieve" from his disease. He brought back with him this remarkable book of hard-won insights about our country and ourselves--how we get to our end s and what we learn along the way. An at times heart-catching departure fro m the polemics and social criticism that have made Horowitz one of our most controversial public intellectuals, THE END OF TIME is a lyrical meditatio n on subjects ranging from what parents inadvertently teach us in their dea ths, to the forbidding realities of the cancer ward, to the way in which fi gures like Mohammed Atta use death as a strategy in becoming gods of their own mad creation. Hovering protectively over these ruminations is Horowitz' s wife, April, whose stubborn love reached into the heart of his medical da rkness and led him back toward the light of this work. If THE END OF TIME i s about how the commitments we make in this life steer us toward our fate, it is also about the redemptive power of language and literature. One of th e writers who helped Horowitz make sense of what had happened to him and wh at was happening around him was the 17th century Catholic philosopher and s cientist Blaise Pascal, whose PENSEES functions here as a model and guide. THE END OF TIME resembles the PENSEES in its striking combination of sense and sensibility, and in the way that its unflinching search for the truth i

Penguin 1980 014005622X / 9780140056228 Paperback Very Good
In the mid 1880s, a patient admitted to the London Hospital in Whitechapel caught the imagination of the public. He was a horribly deformed man named Joseph Merrick, who suffered from severe multiple neurofibromatosis. The di sease made portions of his body grow freakishly; hence, he was called the " elephant man" in sideshows, where he was exhibited before coming to the att ention of doctors. Roughly a century later, Merrick again caught the public eye when his story was brought to film and Broadway. This revised edition of the 1980 original contains a more factual account of Merrick's life, inc luding updated information about him and his condition. The text is capped with numerous photographs of the players, including some startling prints o f Merrick while alive and of his deformed skeleton after death. 171 Iacocca, Lee TALKING STRAIGHT
Bantam 1989 0553278053 / 9780553278057 Paperback Very Good
From Library Journal In Iacocca, the author focused primarily on what goes on in the boardrooms of Ford and Chrysler. In this sequel, America's best known respected CEO turns to the nation's problems. Along the way he outlines his theory of management, including the eight "commandments" he has developed over a 40-year career. He addresses such public policy problems as corporate takeovers, the trade deficit, the plight of farmers, education, and the declining quality of American products. More personally, he talks about raising his two daughters, coping with his wife's death, his recent divorce, growing old, and what he would do if he were president, but making it clear the office holds no allure for him. Vintage Iacocca; highly recommended.

MENNONITE IN A LITTLE BLACK DRESS: A MEMOIR OF GOING HOME, Janzen, Rhoda

St. Martin's Griffin 2010 0805092250 / 9780805092257 Paperback Very Good
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: Starred Review. At first, the worst week of Janzen's life--she gets into a debilitating car wreck right after her husband leaves her for a guy he met on the Internet and saddles her with a mortgage she can't afford--seems to come out of nowhere, but the disaster's long buildup becomes clearer as she opens herself up. Her 15-year relationship with Nick had always been punctuated by manic outbursts and verbally abusive behavior, so recognizing her co-dependent role in their marriage becomes an important part of Janzen's recovery (even as she tweaks the 12 steps just a bit). The healing is further assisted by her decision to move back in with her Mennonite parents, prompting her to look at her childhood religion with fresh, twinkling eyes. (She provides an appendix for those unfamiliar with Mennonite culture, as well as a list of shame-based foods from hot potato salad to borscht.) Janzen is always ready to gently turn the humor back on herself, though, and women will immediately warm to the self-deprecating honesty with which she describes the efforts of friends and family to help her re-establish her emotional well-being.

Seal Press 2001 1580050522 / 9781580050524 Paperback Near Fine
Born in India, raised in Indonesia and Singapore and educated at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., Jayapal received a grant from the Institut e of Current World Affairs to revisit her native country and write about he r observations on contemporary Indian society. Jayapal, who holds an MBA an d has experience both in the private and nonprofit banking sectors, is most enlightening in this collection of essays when combining her professional expertise and personal observation in order to comment on the theory and pr ogress of development in India. For example, in Kerala, which has been long hailed as a successful model of development, Jayapal explains that the sam e forces of unemployment, corruption and gender discrimination are at work as in other "less developed" states, just in less obvious ways. Jayapal has a fine ear for listening to others and supplies impressive examples of bot h successful and unsuccessful development efforts by organizations and vill ages. "Development groups often installed technologies without explaining t o villagers what they were or how to maintain them," charges Jayapal at one point, then continues, "I became increasingly convinced that the most impo rtant factor in any development effort is listening to those who will live with the consequences." Less intriguing are her more personal remarks, whic h are bloated with dull truisms, such as "Little is black and white in Indi a" and "One is challenged every day to look at life not in absolutes but in relatives." These blemishes aside, those interested in economic and social development--particularly women's issues--would be well served in taking u

SEMI-DETACHED, Jones, Griff Rhys
177 Jones, Griff Rhys SEMI-DETACHED
Penguin Books Ltd 2007 0141012870 / 9780141012872 Paperback Good
A tight clean softcover, no markings throughout: Semi-detached Griff relives freezing bus journeys to school and the impulsive stealing of that half-a-crown from Charlie Hume's money box; sitting outside Butlins at Clacton (longing to be inside and on the Waltzer instead of stranded on the pebbles with his dad); hazy summer afternoons spent with feral gangs in the woods, or storming the mud flats singing extracts from the Bonzo Dog Dooh Dah Band. The memories are like Mivvis, frozen and fuzzy at the edges, but a sweet jam of pure recollected goo at the centre. From birth to the BBC, this is a story of a confident middle child. Griff's devoted parents Gwynneth and Elwyn gave him love, security and plenty of asparagus soup from a fake wicker vacuum flask with a plastic top. Griff's father Elwyn, a retiring hospital doctor with a penchant for sweeties and ice-cream, loathed the tedium of English social ritual and hid behind his family and woodwork. From tree houses to boats, puppets to tables, he sawed and hammered his way into his family's affections. Griff left the bosom of his loving, irascible, eccentric, solid, all engulfing family for the firm embrace of real life; via the Upminster Fun Gang, the Direct Grant System and Party Sevens, losing his virginity down the back of a bunk in a twenty nine foot yacht, discovering the romantic advantages of shared babysitting engagements and the drawbacks of infatuation with identical twins. If he hadn't moved around so much as a child, would Griff have felt less like a voyeur, looking in on the lighted window across the square, the Georgian house glowing in the sun, the clink of gla

CONVERSATIONS WITH ERICA JONG, Jong, Erica
178 Jong, Erica CONVERSATIONS WITH ERICA JONG
University Press of Mississi 2002 1578065100 / 9781578065103 Paperback Very Good+
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: Rarely is sex discussed so often and so explicitly in author interviews as it is here in this piquant collection of conversations with the bright, aud acious, and pioneering Jong, poet, novelist, and critic who will always be remembered for Fear of Flying, her shocking and liberating 1973 surprise be st-seller (12 millions copies and counting), a publishing milestone that ma de her a media darling. Jong's celebrity status overshadowed her considerab le literary skills and artistic intentions, an image problem the adventurou s and talented writer has had to contend with ever since. This "polarizatio n," as Templin terms it in her excellent introduction, makes for especially lively, far-ranging, and provocative interviews as Jong, whip smart and de fiant, speaks with unfailing fluency about the often vituperative criticism leveled against women who write frankly about women's sexuality. Jong, who also writes discerningly about the "destructiveness of romanticism for wom en," is a keenly satirical writer with a passion for history and a sharp se nse of humor that spices her fascinating conversations with Playboy, Susie Bright, and such serious literary thinkers as Templin. SEDUCING THE DEMON: WRITING FOR MY LIFE, Jong, Erica
179 Jong, Erica SEDUCING THE DEMON: WRITING FOR MY LIFE
Tarcher 2006 1585424447 / 9781585424443 Hardcover Fine/Fine
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: In four discursive essays and an introduction, Jong (Fear of Flying; Any Woman's Blues) ruminates on the elements of her writer's life. Most notable is sexuality: pursuit of the muse has often meant pursuit of a demon lover, a man utterly wrong for her. She walks away from Ted Hughes in the 1970s, but not from many other wrong men. Jong has had four husbands, one child and 20 books in the past four decades. Now in her 60s, she's well-read, well-traveled, therapized, happily married and sexually satisfied. Her memoir in vignettes asserts that without writing, Jong would go crazy, drink well beyond the excesses of her past and be miserable. Writing has propelled her forward into a fulfilled life. There is a fine section on women writers who pursued death (Plath, Sexton, Woolf); Jong explains why she refused to be one of them. These chatty, gossipy essays are just serious enough to count as literary. Jong, however, shrugs off the immense economic privilege that allowed her to write and travel from adolescence and meet famous people who influenced her writing early.
