INTRODUCTION Barcelona has boomed since the early 1990s, when preparations for the Olymp ic Games wrenched it into modernity, and today it remains well in the vangu ard of other Spanish cities (with the possible exception of Madrid) in term s of prosperity, stability and cultural activity. It's a confident, progres sive city, looking towards the rest of Europe for its inspiration and its i nnovations - the classic tourist images of Spain seem firmly out of place i n Barcelona's bustling central boulevards and stylish modern streets. And s tyle is what brings many visitors here, attracted by enthusiastic newspaper and magazine articles which make much of the outrageous architecture, user -friendly city design, agreeable climate and frenetic nightlife. Even the m edieval Gothic quarter and its once-notorious red-light area have been swep t up by the citywide renovation programme, which is still running at full t ilt. As the new millennium starts Barcelona has continued to blossom from p rovincial city! to putative European capital. Rough Guides 1996 185828161X / 9781858281612 Paperback Very Good
A remarkably complete -- and compact -- travel guide to the entire United S tates. I scrutinized pages for two cities I know intimately (New Haven, CT, and Seattle, WA) and one I just visited (Palm Springs, CA) and can honestl y say that this book does a very good job of capturing the essential feelin g of each place, and of describing the high and low points of each locale. As is inevitable for such a copious compendium, there are entries for estab lishments that have gone out of business (The Unicorn and Costermonger), or entries I wished they had included (The Museum of Toasters). But on the wh ole, it's hard to imagine a more comprehensive and useful volume for the pe rennially peripatetic US traveler. Two suitcases up, up, and away!

INTRODUCTION The islands of Bali and Lombok are part of the Indonesian arch ipelago, a 5000-kilometre-long string of over thirteen thousand islands, st retching between Malaysia in the west and Australia to the east. Located ju st east of the island of Java, Bali has long been the primary focus of Indo nesia's flourishing tourist industry and its eastern neighbour, Lombok, has also grown in popularity in recent years. Both islands are small (Bali ext ends less than 150km at its longest point, Lombok a mere 80km), volcanic, a nd graced with swathes of extremely fertile land, much of it (particularly on Bali) sculpted into terraced rice-paddies. Sandy beaches punctuate the d ramatically rugged coastlines and world-class surf pounds both shorelines.
