4 Breen, Michael THE KOREANS : AMERICA'S TROUBLED RELATIONS WITH NORTH AND SOUTH KOREA
Thomas Dunne Books 1999 0312242115 / 9780312242114 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good/Very Good
A wonderful tight clean copy, protected in a new brodart wrapper, no inscri ptions, unclipped dustjacket, this is not an Ex-Lib or a BCE/BOMC edition. A veteran British journalist examines the history, culture, and economy of North and (principally) South Korea, where he lives for half of each year. Realizing that most readers know Korea only because of the war (1950-53) or because of the communist North's nuclear potential and noisy aggressiveness, Breen limns with patience and perspicuity an engaging portrait of this least-known of the major Asian economic powers. He describes, for example, the ``fierce sense of identity'' among Koreans and concludes that in Korean society ``you are your DNA. He examines Korean religions and educational systems, observing that the peninsula's undergraduate programs are inferior because students experience ``no pressure to perform as undergraduates. In a rapid summary of Korean history, Breen notes that the Koreans ``have remained a distinct people'' for centuries, despite domination by China, Japan, and others. He has a powerful command of anecdote and detail, illustrated for example in his description of community-wide rock fights in the 19th century to settle public disputes and in the horrible image of the 100,000 pickled Korean noses the 16th-century Japanese warriors took to their country to certify their body counts. Breen credits the late South Korean president Park Chung-hee for providing the leadership that propelled his nation into the front ranks of economic powers, but he also presents a devastating analysis of the pervasive bribery and corruption in the Korean business, educa

15 Menzies, Gavin 1421: THE YEAR CHINA DISCOVERED AMERICA
Harper Perennial 2004 006054094X / 9780060540944 Paperback Good
On March 8, 1421, the largest fleet the world had ever seen set sail from C hina. Its mission was "to proceed all the way to the ends of the earth to c ollect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas" and unite the whole wor ld in Confucian harmony. When it returned in October 1423, the emperor had fallen, leaving China in political and economic chaos. The great ships were left to rot at their moo rings and the records of their journeys were destroyed. Lost in China's lon g, self-imposed isolation that followed was the knowledge that Chinese ship s had reached America seventy years before Columbus and had circumnavigated the globe a century before Magellan. Also concealed was how the Chinese co lonized America before the Europeans and transplanted in America and other countries the principal economic crops that have fed and clothed the world. Unveiling incontrovertible evidence of these astonishing voyages, 1421 rewrites our understanding of history. Our knowledge of world exploration as it has been commonly accepted for centuries must now be reconceived due to this landmark work of historical investigation.

William Morrow 2003 0060537639 / 9780060537630 Hardcover Very Good/Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. The incredible true story of the discovery of America before Columbus was e ven born. Gavin Menzies's extraordinary findings rewrite history. On March 8, 1421, the largest fleet the world had ever seen sailed from its base in China. The ships, huge junks nearly five hundred feet long and bui lt from the finest teak, were under the command of Emperor Zhu Di's loyal e unuch admirals. Their mission was "to proceed all the way to the end of the earth to collect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas" and unite th e whole world in Confucian harmony. Their journey would last more than two years and circle the globe. When they returned in October 1423, the emperor had fallen, leaving China i n political and economic chaos. The great ships, now considered frivolous, were left to rot at their moorings and the records of their journeys were d estroyed. Lost in China's long, self-imposed isolation that followed was th e knowledge that Chinese ships had reached America seventy years before Col umbus and circumnavigated the globe a century before Magellan. Also conceal ed were how the Chinese colonized America before the Europeans and transpla nted to America, Australia, New Zealand and South America the principal eco nomic crops that have fed and clothed the world. Now, in a landmark historical journey, Gavin Menzies, who spent fifteen years tracing the astonishing voyages of the Chinese fleet, shares the remarkable account of his discoveries and the incontrovertible evidence to support them.

A CONCISE HISTORY OF CHINA, Roberts, J. A. G.
18 Roberts, J. A. G. A CONCISE HISTORY OF CHINA
Harvard University Press 1999 0674000757 / 9780674000759 Paperback Near Fine
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. The centuries-long complexity of China's political experience, the richness of its culture, and the drama of its economic unfolding are the hallmarks of this short but sweeping history. China's own history is entwined with it s response to the West in a rich tapestry depicting its peoples, rulers, an d society. More than a nuanced history of a vast continent, this study is s ensitive to the multifaceted and changing interpretations of China that hav e been offered over the years. In this overarching book, J. A. G. Roberts refers to recent archeological f inds--the caches of bronze vessels found at Sanxingdui--and to new document ary reevaluations--the reassessment of Manchu documentation. The first half of the book provides an up-to-date interpretation of China's early and imp erial history, while the second half concentrates on the modern period and provides an interpretive account of major developments--the impact of Weste rn imperialism, the rise of Chinese Communism, and the record of the People 's Republic of China since 1949. Concise and direct, this book is a compelling narrative and handy companion for those interested in China.
