12 Boldt, Laurence G. Zen and the Art of Making a Living: A Practical Guide to Creative Career De sign (Compass)
Penguin Books 1999 0140195998 / 9780140195996 Paperback Very Good
The bad old days of multiple-choice-test career counseling are over. It tak es more than a #2 pencil and a computer to find your life's work, as career consultant Laurence G. Boldt tells us in Zen and the Art of Making a Livin g, a hefty but lighthearted tome that will help you find yourself and your place in the world. Boldt is quite up-front about it, though: it's a long, hard journey to get there. But his uplifting prose and liberal doses of ins pirational quotes from wise men and women provide support for the weary tra veler. Indeed, in between learning how to find the kind of work that strike s the right chord for you, figuring out what skills and talents you'll need to succeed at it, and righteously persisting until you get your reward, yo u may find lapses and stumbling blocks you hadn't expected--but Boldt has s een them all and finds the right words at the right time to keep you moving . Like a traditional career book, Zen and the Art of Making a Living includ es résumé advice and worksheets for narrowing down and sticking with your g oals; however, it takes off from there to guide the reader on a quest for s piritual fulfillment through work, something you won't find elsewhere. This updated edition contains plenty of Internet-related information and other resources unavailable in 1990 and is invaluable for anyone concerned about his or her future in the world of work. --Rob Lightner

What Color is Your parachute?, Bolles, Richard
13 Bolles, Richard What Color is Your parachute?
Ten Speed 2002 1580083412 / 9781580083416 Paperback Very Good+
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout, not an ex-lib: For three decades Richard Nelson Bolles's annually updated and revised Para chute has been cheerfully advising people that the best way to find a job o r make a career change isn't to answer a job ad and/or send in a CV. That w ay, the statistical odds are heavily stacked against success. Instead he ad vocates a creative three-pronged approach. You are in charge so be proactiv e and sell yourself. First identify your talents (and of course you've got lots). Then work out where you would like to apply these transferable skill s. Lastly, decide how you will pursue organisations which interest you. The reafter it's down to your efforts: "Successful job hunting is a learned ski ll. You have to study it. You have to practice it. You have to master it, j ust like any new skill. And master it thoroughly because you'll need it all the rest of your life", says Bolles. An ordained Episcopal priest, Bolles was canon pastor of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Made redundant in 1968, he created another career by publishing the first edition of Parachute in 1971--then little more than a newsletter. Today it is published in 10 languages world-wide and bought by 20,000 people a month. It's an immensely detailed, friendly book whose attractive layout includes coloured fonts, nice historical sketches and lots of easy-to-read grids, charts and even the odd poem. Useful Internet site addresses abound. And although Parachute is American, most of Bolles's advice is just as applicable in Britain as in the US. Bolles evidently means to be inspirational and is. He's also down to earth. Once

20 Brown, John L. The Hero's Journey: How Educators Can Transform Schools and Improve Learnin g
Association for Supervision 1999 0871203448 / 9780871203441 Paperback Fine
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout This is a book about hope. It affirms the power of personal and collective responsibility to enact heroic changes in our schools. Through a shared vis ion, purpose, and inquiry--and using the collective wisdom of myth, legend, and metaphor from around the world--we can find the inspiration and courage to face the challenges inher ent in transforming schools into authentic learning organizations. As the heroes of legend leave the safety of their homes to face dragons and serpents in their quest for treasure and enlightenment, so do modern educators face new practices a nd confront the barriers to change in education. The authors show how heroic educators can triumph in their journey--and achieve excellence for students. Like both Arthurian and Jedi Knights, the Native American hero Black Elk, and Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, heroic educators face six stages on their journey: - innocence lost; - chaos and complexity; - the heroic quest; - gurus and alliances; - trials, tests, and initiations; and - insight and transformation. Finally, the heroic educator returns "home" and begins the journey again, w ith a renewed vision and an enlarged heart, to create a caring community for learners of all ages.
