POSTMODERNISMS NOW: ESSAYS ON CONTEMPORANEITY IN THE ARTS (LITERATURE AND P HILOSOPHY), Altieri, Charles
4 Altieri, Charles POSTMODERNISMS NOW: ESSAYS ON CONTEMPORANEITY IN THE ARTS (LITERATURE AND P HILOSOPHY)
Pennsylvania State Univ Pr ( 1998 0271018046 / 9780271018041 Paperback Near Fine
A clean softcover, no markings throughout, NOT an ex-lib book: Postmodernism today is driven by a set of theoretical stances that grow increasingly problematic. But as the theoretical contradictions emerge, it becomes possible to contrast this theoretical discourse to the ambitions that initially led writers and artists to pursue their version of postmodern perspectives. So this book explores what remains viable and valuable in some representative versions of what these writers and artists created. Altieri begins with an essay defining five basic contradictions in postmodern theory and outlining specific artistic strategies for dwelling with and within those contradictions. Part Two then sets the historical stage with two essays one focusing on the efforts to overthrow late modernism by Jasper Johns and John Ashbery, the other tracing the emergence of a logic of contingency in the poetics of Robert Creeley, Frank O'Hara, and Sylvia Plath. With Part Three the focus shifts to essays proposing different value frameworks for postmodern poets, frameworks that range from moral philosophy to the resources of the tradition of love poetry. Part Four turns to visual artists first engaging the efforts to politicize the postmodern in the 1980s, then showing how Frank Stella's work can be put in dialogue with that of Jacques Derrida. Finally, the book swallows its own tail by proposing an argument that the only version of the sublime that today does not collapse into self-congratulation is the sublime of self-disgust.Postmodernism Now holds out the possibility that the arts have been America s richest negotiations of postmodernity, an

"Reading Julia Alvarez's new collection of essays is like curling up with a glass of wine in one hand and the phone in the other, listening to a big-h earted, wisecracking friend share hard-earned wisdom about family, identity , and the art of writing." -People The rich and revealing essays in Something to Declare offer Julia Alvarez's dual meditations on coming to America and becoming a writer. In the first section, "Customs," Alvarez relates how she and her family fled the Dominican Republic and its oppressive dictator, Rafael Trujillo, settling in New York City in the 1960s. Here Julia begins a love affair with the English language under the tutelage of the aptly named Sister Maria Generosa. Part Two-"Declarations"-celebrates Alvarez's enduring passion for the writing life. 13 Babel, Isaac RED CAVALRY
W. W. Norton & Company 2003 0393324230 / 9780393324235 Paperback Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. "Amazing not only as literature but as biography."-Richard Bernstein, The N ew York Times One of the great masterpieces of Russian literature, the Red Cavalry cycle retains today the shocking freshness that made Babel's reputation when the stories were first published in the 1920s. Using his own experiences as a j ournalist and propagandist with the Red Army during the war against Poland, Babel brings to life an astonishing cast of characters from the exuberant, violent era of early Soviet history: commissars and colonels, Cossacks and peasants, and among them the bespectacled, Jewish writer/intellectual, obs erving it all and trying to establish his role in the new Russia. Drawn from the acclaimed, award-winning Complete Works of Isaac Babel, this volume includes all of the Red Cavalry cycle; Babel's 1920 diary, from which the material for the fiction was drawn; and his preliminary sketches for the stories-the whole constituting a fascinating picture of a great writer turning life into art.

14 BAKER, NICHOLSON SIZE OF THOUGHTS:, THE: ESSAYS AND OTHER LUMBER
Random House 1996 0679439323 / 9780679439325 1st Edition Hardcover Fine/Fine
A highly collectible first edition (as stated)price clipped, protected in a new brodart wrapper. Novelist and essayist Nicholson Baker has had a small but well-deserved cult following since his first book, The Mezzanine, and the publication of the literary sex-bomb Vox saw his popularity mushroom. Baker's great gift is a precision of observational detail that has a peculiarly incisive effect on a reader's consciousness. Here is over a decade's worth of his essays and articles, including the much-praised card catalogue article first published in the New Yorker. The Size of Thoughts, through its varied forays into the realms of the overlooked, the underfunded, and the wrongfully scrapped, is a funny and thought-provoking book by one of the most distinctive stylists and thinkers of our time.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH: STORIES OF PLACE, Barbato, Joseph (Editor)
15 Barbato, Joseph (Editor) OFF THE BEATEN PATH: STORIES OF PLACE
North Point Pr 1998 086547530X / 9780865475304 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good/Very Good
A crisp hardcover, first edition (as stated): Thirteen literary powerhouses, including Annie Proulx, Howard Norman, Rita Mae Brown and Lee Smith, visited Nature Conservancy sites and contributed top-of-form short stories to this excellent collection. As Barbara Kingsolver explains in her foreword, the writers "took pilgrimages to places where they could think straight, remember, and properly invent." While paeans to wild places, most of these tales are imaginative flights transcending setting. Norman's "The Chauffeur" is a haunting account of the relationship between a bookish driver, Tuttle Albers, and the older Japanese woman he transports each week from San Francisco to Point Reyes National Seashore, where she never does see the white pelican she's looking for. After she dies, Tuttle's experience with an injured pelican affects his romantic relationship with a zoologist. Also a standout is Richard Bausch's "Glass Meadow," in which two young boys are adrift with their irresponsible parents. When they hole up in an empty cabin and the father orders them to go out and kill something to eat, 12-year-old narrator Patrick comes up against his own savage nature in a comical, bittersweet encounter with a phlegmatic cow. Humor also enriches Brown's "Early Lessons," in which the young narrator learns from her feuding mother and aunt about the food chain. While some storiesA"A Blackfoot River Fable" by David James Duncan and "Fiber" by Rick BassAare didactic, and othersASmith's "Botanizing upon the Mountain"Aare enigmatic, overall this is a cohesive whole, evoking the spirit of our nation's wild landscape and its power to nurture a

16 Barnes, Julian THE LEMON TABLE
Jonathan Cape Ltd 2004 022407198X / 9780224071987 Hardcover Good/Good
If Julian Barnes' new collection of stories has a theme it is 'rage in age' . Among the Chinese the lemon is the symbol of death. At the 'lemon table' (a coinage of Sibelius, protagonist of the final story) it is permissible - indeed obligatory - to talk about death, and each of Barnes' characters is facing death, but each in a very different way. The settings range from ei ghteenth-century Sweden and nineteenth-century Russia to the 'Barnet Shop', a hairdessing salon where an old man measures out his life in haircuts, or a South Bank concert hall where a music lover carries out an obsessive cam paign against those who cough in concerts. In 'Knowing French' an eighty-fo ur-year old woman, a former teacher 'incarcerated' in an old people's home, begins a correspondence with an author - 'Dear Dr Barnes' - that enriches both their lives. In 'Appetite' a woman reads elaborate recipes to her sick husband as a substitute for sex. In 'Hygiene' an old soldier makes his reg ular trip to town to do errands for his wife - stilton from Paxton's, rubbe r rings for Kilner jars, Elizabeth Arden powder - and to spend the afternoo n with a tart called Babs. These stories are wise, funny, clever and moving .

WHERE THREE ROADS MEET, Barth, John
17 Barth, John WHERE THREE ROADS MEET
Mariner Books 2006 0618773428 / 9780618773428 Paperback Very Good
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. From the acclaimed John Barth, "one of the greatest novelists of our time" (Washington Post Book World) and "a master of language" (Chicago Sun-Times) , comes a lively triad of tales that delight in the many possibilities of l anguage and its users. The first novella, "Tell Me," explores a callow undergraduate's initiation into the mysteries of sex, death, and the Heroic Cycle. The second novella, "I've Been Told," traces no less than the history of storytelling and exam ines innocence and modernity, ignorance and self-consciousness. And the thr ee elderly sisters of the third novella, "As I Was Saying . . . ," record a n oral history of their youthful muse-like services to (and servicings of) a subsequently notorious and now mysteriously vanished novelist. Sexy, humorous, and brimming with Barth's deep intelligence and playful irreverence, Where Three Roads Meet will surely delight loyal fans and draw new ones.

Profile Books(GB) 2011 1846685257 / 9781846685255 1st Edition Hardcover As New
A crisp clean first edition, no markings throughout: This title includes unexpected tales from the master of short fiction. "The Shielding of Mrs Forbes" - Graham Forbes is a disappointment to his mother who thinks that if he must have a wife, he should have done better. And he r own husband would be better if she were mourning him than living with him . But this is Alan Bennett, so no matter the importance of keeping up appea rances, what is happening in the bedroom (and in lots of other places too) is altogether more startling, perhaps shocking, and ultimately much more ho nest to people's predilections. "The Greening of Mrs Donaldson" - Mrs Donal dson is a conventional middle-class woman beached on the shores of widowhoo d after a marriage that had been much like many others: happy to begin with , then satisfactory and finally dull. But when she decides to take in two l odgers (a young, broke couple) passions that she never knew existed are aro used, and her mundane life becomes much more stimulating... Editorial Reviews Review "'Beautiful and filthy' - Simon Hattenstone, Guardian" About the Author Alan Bennett is one of the UK's most celebrated figures. He is the author of Untold Stories, and numerous works of fiction including The Uncommon Reader. His play The History Boys was the National Theatre's most successful production ever.
