1 Abadi, Jennifer F. A FISTFUL OF LENTILS
Harvard Common Press 2002 1558322183 / 9781558322189 1st Edition Hardcover Near Fine/Near Fine
A crisp clean hardcover, no markings throughout: Abadi inherited both Ashkenazi and Sephardic cuisines from her two grandmot hers, and presents here the lesser known treasures from her Syrian Grandma Fritzie in a down-to-earth Middle Eastern cookbook that goes beyond the typ ical hummus and falafel. All recipes are kosher and many are suitable for h olidays: Lamb with Lemon and Olives for Rosh Hashana or Stuffed Squash with Lemon-Mint Sauce for special Sabbaths. Many dishes, like Spinach-Mint Soup or Crushed Wheat with Chickpeas and Pot Cheese are easy for everyday light and even vegetarian meals. This well-rounded cookbook explains, in a gloss ary, ingredients such as tamarind paste and phyllo, provides a list of spec ialty stores and a menu planner, and guides the cook from appetizers, such as Eggplant Dip with Pine Nuts, to desserts (Flourless Pistachio Cookies, w hich are perfect for Passover), and from formal (Orange Chicken with Golden Raisins and Figs), to casual (Syrian Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Mint). N ever overdone, flavors appear in combinations surprising to the typical Nor th American palate, such as Stuffed Baby Eggplants with Apricots and Meat, and Eggs with Rhubarb. For Syrian Jewish women, cooking is an art form, sha red among neighbors and families but closely guarded from outsiders. Luckil y, Abadi offers these secrets in her book. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal Like others of her generation, Abadi realized that the cuisine she grew up with might disappear unless she recorded the recipes for the traditional dishes that her grandmother and mother had always served. DR. ATKINS' QUICK AND EASY NEW DIET COOKBOOK, Atkins, Robert C.
9 Atkins, Robert C. DR. ATKINS' QUICK AND EASY NEW DIET COOKBOOK
Fireside 1997 0684837013 / 9780684837017 Plastic Comb Very Good+
"Diet food can be better, richer, and more sumptuous than most everyday foo ds," says Dr. Robert Atkins, author of the massive bestseller, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. Carbohydrates, in his opinion, are the root of metabol ic evil and the source of hyperinsulinemia, a condition that makes it next to impossible to lose weight. Billed as a companion to his Diet Revolution book, this collection of recipes focuses on ultralow-carbohydrate dishes. H is anticarb stance leads to some unconventional dietary advice: "Remember t hat, as a rule, the lower the fat content of a milk product, the higher its carbohydrate grams. Use cream, not skim milk; use sour cream, not yogurt." While these recipes are certainly quick and easy to prepare and feature easy-to-find ingredients, some are very high in fat (Zabaglione, Crab and Avocado Salad, Ham and Cheese Sandwiches, Baked Eggs in Bacon Rings). While it may be true that fat is flavor and is necessary to some extent to keeping blood sugar on an even keel, these recipes won't be helpful for those who are watching their cholesterol or are on similarly restricted diets.

VEGETARIAN SOUPS FOR ALL SEASONS, Atlas, Nava
10 Atlas, Nava VEGETARIAN SOUPS FOR ALL SEASONS
Little, Brown and Company 1996 0316057339 / 9780316057332 Paperback Good
"Soup of the evening, beautiful soup!" sang Mock Turtle, to which Atlas (Ve getariana) here adds a vegetarian refrain. Recipes for more than 100 savory soups, chowders, bisques, purees and stews are adapted from several differ ent world cuisines; suggested garnishes and basic nutrition analyses per se rving are included. Following two introductory sections outlining stock and broth recipes with soup-making (and freezing) tips, chapters follow the se asons. Gingered Pumpkin-Apple Soup and Southwestern Fresh Corn Stew help us her in fall. The winter section mixes comforting old favorites such as Mine strone with new inventions like Italian Vegetable Stew with Gnocchi and zes ty Taco Soup, with bulgur, pinto beans and chilies. Spring features Greek-F lavored Spinach and Orzo Soup, heady with lemon and fresh dill, and summer serves up Cool Ratatouille, a no-cook Creamy Avocado Soup (made with butter milk instead of cream) and a sweetly refreshing Melon Medley. A final chapt er, "Accompaniments," adds recipes for muffins, breads, scones and dumpling s?even croutons. Atlas's straightforward recipes, enlivened by quotes and d rawings, promise soups of complex, rewarding flavor based on judicious comb inations of ingredients rather than on complicated preparation.

WINE SNOBBERY: AN EXPOSE, Barr, Andrew
14 Barr, Andrew WINE SNOBBERY: AN EXPOSE
Simon & Schuster 1992 067170804X / 9780671708047 1st Edition Hardcover Near Fine/Near Fine
A crisp clean hardcover, no markings throughout, NOT an ex-lib: Exploring the history and current status of wine production, marketing, and drinking, Barr concentrates primarily on the United States, Britain, and France. A British wine writer, he seems particularly to enjoy comparison of British and American tastes, trade publications, and wine management in restaurants. His tone occasionally smacks of high-handed muckraking. However, his extensive research and critical approach provide unusual insight and considerable detail not found elsewhere. Even those who differ with Barr's conclusions should agree that he offers a unique, often uncomplimentary perspective on the world of wine as it has developed and pretty much as it is today. His book will interest and sometimes aggravate serious wine enthusiasts and professionals.

15 Bastianich, Lidia LIDIA'S ITALIAN TABLE
HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS 1998 0688154107 / 9780688154103 Hardcover Near Fine/Near Fine
Lidia's Italian Table LIDIA MATTICCHIO BASTIANICH "Let me invite you on a journey with me from my childhood ..." beckons Lidi a Bastianich, hostess of the national public television series Lidia's Ital ian Table. And what an incredible journey it proves to be. Lidia's Italian Table is overflowing with glorious Italian food, highlighte d by Lidia's personal collection of recipes accumulated since her childhood in Istria, located in northern Italy on the Adriatic Sea. Hearty and heart warming Italian fare is what Lidia understands best, and each chapter of th is gorgeous cookbook is infused with Lidia's warm memories of a lifetime of eating and cooking Italian style. Since good Italian food is based on good ingredients, Lidia includes an elo quent discourse on those products that are the cornerstones of Italian cuis ine: olives (and their green-golden oil), Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, salt, porcini mushrooms, truffles, tomato paste, and hot peppers. She also expla ins the importance of regional wines and grappa (in flavors from honey to d ried fig) in the Italian food experience. Her recipes are filled with these Italian delicacies-Fennel, Olive, and Citrus Salad; Tagliatelle with Porci ni Mushroom Sauce; Seared Rabbit Loin over Arugula with Truffle Dressing; A sparagus Gratin with Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese-, and Zabaglione with Barol o Wine. Lidia explores every corner of Italian cuisine: from fresh and dry pasta to gnocchi and risotto to game and shellfish, all of which Lidia transforms into exceptional Italian dishes. But that is only the beginning. There are Italian soups to savor, like hearty minestre, bread-enriched zuppe

19 Bourdain, Anthony MEDIUM RAW: A BLOODY VALENTINE TO THE WORLD OF FOOD AND THE PEOPLE WHO COOK
Ecco 2010 0061718947 / 9780061718946 Hardcover Very Good/Very Good
A crisp clean hardcover, no markings throughout, not an ex-lib: No one really expected Bourdain to top his wildly popular Kitchen Confidential, even Bourdain himself: several critics wrote that he seems alternately awed and appalled by his own celebrity. Those parts of Medium Raw--more of a collection of essays than a streamlined narrative--that seemed to grow out of that celebrity, such as Bourdain's feuds with food critics and celebrity chefs, impressed reviewers the least. But they still found much to savor, particularly Bourdain's biting personality, his own humorous self-deprecation, his ability to bring out the unknown elements of the restaurant industry, particularly the kitchen and service staff who might otherwise be ignored, and, not least of all, the well-written (if often vulgar) and compelling stories. In the end, though Medium Raw will best be appreciated by foodies, it is "generally an entertaining read, compelling more for [Bourdain's] passion than his mean streak" (Kansas City Star).
